⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now shall this assembly lick up all that are round about us, as a calf would lick up the green herbs of the field. And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

² And when Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel did to the Amorites,

⁷ And the elders of Moab went, and the elders of Midian, and their divining instruments were in their hands; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balak.

¹⁷ I will point to Him, but not now; I bless Him, but He draws not near: a Star shall arise out of Jacob, a Man shall spring forth out of Israel; and shall crush the princes of Moab, and shall spoil all the sons of Seth.

¹⁵ And the name of the Midianite woman who was smitten, was Cozbi, daughter of Zur, a prince of the nation of Hommoth: it is a chief house among the people of Midian. ¹⁶ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ¹⁷ Harass the Midianites as enemies, and strike them, ¹⁸ for they are enemies to you by the treachery in which they ensnare you through Peor, and through Cozbi their sister, daughter of a prince of Midian, who was smitten in the day of the plague because of Peor.

⁸ And they killed the kings of Midian together with their slain subjects; even Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian; and they killed with the sword Balaam the son of Beor with their other slain.

²¹ and all the cities of Misor, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, whom Moses struck, even him and the princes of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, prince of the spoils of Sihon, dwelling in the country. ²² And Balaam the son of Beor the prophet they killed in the battle.

²⁵ And now are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he indeed fight with Israel, or indeed make war with him,

³⁸ And on all the housetops of Moab, and in his streets shall be mourining; for I have broken him, says the Lord, as a vessel, which is useless.
