And is not this day gloom without brightness?

Matthew 3:7-12

7 But seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, 9 and do not think to say among yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham out of these stones. 10 But even now, the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit, 12 whose winnowing shovel is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His threshing floor, and He will gather His wheat into the barn; but the chaff He will burn up with unquenchable fire."

31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said to Him, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Assuredly I say to you, that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; but you, having seen, did not repent afterwards, that you might believe him. 33 "Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to farmers and went on a journey. 34 Now when harvest time of fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the farmers, that they might collect his fruits. 35 And the farmers took his servants, they beat one, and one they killed, and another they stoned. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did to them likewise. 37 And at last he sent to them his son, saying, 'They will respect my son.' 38 "But when the farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and let us gain possession of his inheritance.' 39 "And taking him, they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?" 41 They said to Him, "He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other farmers, who will render to him the fruits in their seasons." 42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: 'The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? 43 "Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God shall be taken away from you, and it shall be given to a nation producing the fruits of it. 44 And he who falls on this Stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder."

Matthew 23:13-35

13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation. 14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the kingdom of heaven before men; for you do not enter, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you travel around land and sea to make one proselyte, and whenever he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you. 16 Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, is obligated.' 17 "Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, is obligated.' 19 "Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 Therefore he that swears by the altar, swears by it and by all the things on it. 21 He that swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwelt in it. 22 And he that swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the more important things of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These things you should have done, and not have neglected the others. 24 Blind guides, you who strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel! 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and unrighteousness. 26 Blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and dish, so that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and of all uncleanness. 28 Thus also you outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.' 31 "So that you testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who killed the prophets. 32 And you, fill up then, the measure of your fathers' guilt. 33 Serpents! Brood of vipers! How shall you escape from the condemnation of hell? 34 Therefore, behold, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and you will crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and you will persecute from city to city, 35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood being shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

And having entered, He reclined to eat. 38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before the meal. 39 But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but the inside of you is full of greed and evil. 40 Fools! Did not He who made the outside also make the inside? 41 Nevertheless give what is inside as alms; and see, all things are clean to you. 42 But woe to you Pharisees! Because you pay a tithe of mint and rue and every vegetable, and you pass over justice and the love of God. These things you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! Because you love the first seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you are like unmarked graves, and the men walking over them do not know it." 45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, "Teacher, by saying these things You insult us also." 46 And He said, "Woe to you lawyers as well! Because you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you! Because you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

John 8:41-48

41 You do the works of your father." Then they said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father--God." 42 Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would have loved Me, for I came forth and have come from God; nor have I come from Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? Because you are unable to hear My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar, and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear them, because you are not of God." 48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say well that You are a Samaritan, and You have a demon?"

Therefore your sin remains.

John 15:22-24

22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse concerning their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done the works among them which no one else has done, they would have no sin; but now they have both seen and they have hated both Me and My Father.

Romans 9:31-33

31 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not attain to the law of righteousness. 32 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. Romans 11:5-10

5 Even so then, at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work. 7 What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were blinded. 8 Just as it is written: "God has given them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, to this very day." 9 And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a recompense to them. 10 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, and their back always be bowed down."

Hebrews 10:28-29

28 Anyone disregarding the law of Moses dies without compassions on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 By how much worse punishment, do you think, will he be deemed worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, and has regarded as common the blood of the covenant, by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
