¹³ But those on the rock are they that, whenever they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of testing fall away.

²⁸ But if you shall also say, What shall we say before him, and so find the root of the matter in him?

¹² Then they believed His words, and celebrated His praise. ¹³ They made haste, they forgot His works; they waited not for His counsel. ¹⁴ And they lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the dry land.

³ A man shall not prosper by wickedness, but the roots of the righteous shall not be taken up.

¹² The desires of the ungodly are evil, but the roots of the godly are firmly set.

² They seek Me day by day, and desire to know My ways, as a people that had done righteousness, and had not forsaken the judgment of their God; they now ask of Me righteous judgment, and desire to draw near to God,

³² And you are to them as a sound of a sweet, well-tuned psaltery, and they will hear your words, but they will not do them.

⁴ What shall I do unto you, Ephraim? What shall I do to you, Judah? For your mercy is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew that goes away.

²⁰ But the seed sown on stony ground, is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; ²¹ yet he has no root in himself, but is short-lived. For when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he stumbles.

¹⁶ And these are similarly the seeds being sown on stony ground which, whenever they hear the word, immediately they receive it with joy; ¹⁷ and they have no root in themselves, but are shortlived. Afterward, when trials or persecution arise because of the word, immediately they fall away.

²⁰ for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and he was protecting him. And when he heard him, he did many things, but he would hear him gladly.

³¹ And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon! Behold, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. ³² But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

²³ Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, at the feast, many believed on His name, beholding the signs which He was doing. ²⁴ But Jesus did not trust Himself to them, because He knew all men, ²⁵ and had no need that anyone should testify concerning man, for He himself knew what was in man.

³⁵ He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

³⁰ While He spoke these words, many believed in Him. ³¹ Then Jesus said to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you abide in My word, truly you are My disciples. ³² And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free."

⁴² Nevertheless even from among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be excommunicated; ⁴³ for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

² Every branch in Me which does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch which bears fruit He prunes, so that it may bear more fruit.

⁶ If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

¹³ Then Simon himself also believed; and having been baptized, he was continuing with Philip, and observing miracles and signs occurring, he was astounded. ¹⁴ Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, ¹⁵ who, coming down, prayed concerning them in order that they might receive the Holy Spirit. ¹⁶ For He had not yet fallen upon any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of Christ Jesus. ¹⁷ Then they laid hands upon them, and they received the Holy Spirit. ¹⁸ Now when Simon observed that by the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, ¹⁹ saying, "Give me this power also, that on whom ever I lay my hands he may receive the Holy Spirit." ²⁰ But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought to acquire the gift of God through money! ²¹ You have neither part nor portion in this word, for your heart is not straight before God. ²² Repent therefore from this your wickedness, and make petition to God, if perhaps the intent of your heart will be forgiven you. ²³ For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and the bond of unrighteousness."

² And though I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

² through which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain.

¹ O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was portrayed publicly among you as crucified?

⁴ Have you suffered so many things in vain--If indeed they really were in vain?

¹⁵ What then was your blessing? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have torn out your own eyes and given them to me! ¹⁶ Have I therefore become your enemy by speaking the truth to you? ¹⁷ They are zealous about you in the wrong way; but they wish to shut you out, so that you will be zealous about them. ¹⁸ But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you. ¹⁹ My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you! ²⁰ And I wanted to be present with you just now and to change my tone; because I am uncertain about you.

¹⁷ that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; being rooted and founded in love,

²³ if indeed you continue in the faith, having been founded and firm and not drifting away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was proclaimed to all creation under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.

⁷ having been rooted and built up in Him and being established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

⁵ Because of this, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to learn about your faith, lest somehow the tempter had tempted you, and our labor be in vain.

¹⁹ having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck,

¹⁸ who have strayed concerning the truth, asserting that the resurrection has already occurred; and they overturn the faith of some. ¹⁹ Nevertheless the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those that are His," and, "Let everyone naming the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness."

³⁹ But we are not of those shrinking back to destruction, but of faith, to the saving of the soul.

²⁶ For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

²⁰ For if having escaped from the corruptions of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, yet by these, having become entangled they are defeated, the latter end has become worse for them than the first.

²² But it has happened to them according to the saying of the true proverb: "A dog returns to his own vomit," and, "A sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire."

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out in order that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

¹² These are stains in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves, they are waterless clouds being carried along by winds; late autumn trees unfruitful, twice having died, having been uprooted,
