¹⁹ And Joshua said to the people, Indeed you will not be able to serve the Lord, for God is holy; and He being jealous will not forgive your sins and your transgressions.

⁵ You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them; for I am the Lord your God, a jealous God, recompensing the sins of the fathers upon the children, to the third and fourth generation to them that hate Me,

²¹ Take heed to yourself and hearken to Him, and disobey Him not; for He will not give way to you, for My name is in Him.

⁷ and keeping justice and mercy for thousands, taking away iniquity and unrighteousness and sins; and He will not clear the guilty; bringing the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and to the children's children, to the third and fourth generation.

¹⁴ For you shall not worship strange gods, for the Lord God, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God;

³ And Moses said to Aaron, This is the thing which the Lord spoke, saying, I will be sanctified among them that draw near to Me, and I will be glorified in the whole congregation; and Aaron was pricked in his heart.

² Speak to the congregation of the children of Israel, and you shall say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.

²⁶ And you shall be holy to Me; because I the Lord your God am holy, who separated you from all nations, to be Mine.

²³ And now take away the strange gods that are among you, and set your heart right toward the Lord God of Israel.

¹⁵ And Naomi said to Ruth, Behold, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; turn now also after your sister-in-law.

¹⁴ And it shall not go on so; I have sworn to the house of Eli, the iniquity of the house of Eli shall not be atoned for with incense or sacrifices forever.

¹⁶ Nevertheless they sneered at His messengers, and despised His words, and mocked His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose up against His people, till there was no remedy.

¹⁶ But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and the holy God shall be glorified in righteousness.

³ And one cried to the other, and they said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory. ⁴ And the doorpost shook at the voice they uttered, and the house was filled with smoke. ⁵ And I said, Woe is me, for I am pricked to the heart; for being a man, and having unclean lips, I dwell in the midst of a people having unclean lips; and I have seen with my eyes the King, the Lord of hosts.

¹¹ And after a time there shall be in it no green thing because of the grass being parched. Come here, you woman that comes from a sight; for it is a people of no understanding; therefore He that made them shall have no pity upon them, and He that formed them shall have no mercy upon them.

¹¹ and turn us aside from this way; remove from us this path, and remove from us the oracle of Israel.

¹⁵ Thus says the Lord, the Holy Lord of Israel; When you shall turn and mourn, then you shall be saved; and you shall know where you were, when you trusted in vanities; then your strength became vain, yet you would not hearken;

¹³ His eye is too pure to behold evil doings, and to look upon grievous afflictions: why do You look upon despisers? Will You be silent when the ungodly swallows up the just?

²⁴ "No one is able to serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and he will love the other, or else he will be devoted to the one, and he will despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

²⁵ Now great crowds were traveling with Him. And turning, He said to them, ²⁶ If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. ²⁷ And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. ²⁸ For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and count up the cost, whether he has the resources to complete it? ²⁹ Lest perhaps after he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all those who see it begin to mock him, ³⁰ saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.' ³¹ Or what king, going to engage another king in battle, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks the terms for peace. ³³ So likewise, every one of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be My disciple.

²⁰ No, but that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not desire that you should have fellowship with demons. ²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons. ²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
