Softly, with the voice of a suppliant? ^{4 (40:23)} And will he make a covenant with you? And will you take him for a perpetual servant? ^{5 (40:24)} And will you play with him as with a bird? Or bind him as a sparrow for a child? ^{6 (40:25)} And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him? ^{7 (40:26)} And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail, neither shall they carry his head in fishing vessels. ^{8 (40:27)} But you shall lay your hand upon him once, remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done anymore. ^{9 (41:0)} Have you not seen him? And have you not wondered at the things said of him? ^{10 (41:1)} Do you not fear because preparation has been made by Me? For who is there that resists Me? ^{11 (41:2)} Or who will resist Me, and stand their ground, since the whole world under heaven is Mine? ^{12 (41:3)} I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power one shall pity his antagonist. ^{13 (41:4)} Who will open the face of his garment? And who can enter within the fold of his breastplate? ^{14 (41:5)} Who will open the doors of his face? Terror is round about his teeth. ^{15 (41:6)} His inwards are as bronze plates, and the texture of his skin as a smyrite stone. ^{16 (41:7)} One part cleaves fast to another, and the air cannot come between them. ^{17 (41:8)} They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and cannot be separated. ^{18 (41:9)} At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are as the appearance of the morning star. ^{19 (41:10)} Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad. ^{20 (41:11)} Out of his nostrils proceeds smoke of a furnace burning with fire of coals. ^{21 (41:12)} His breath is as live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth. ^{22 (41:13)} And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs. ^{23 (41:14)} The flesh also of his body is joined together: if one pours violence upon him, he shall not be moved. ^{24 (41:15)} His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil. ^{25 (41:16)} And when he turns, he is a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth. ^{26 (41:17)} If spears should come against him, men will effect nothing, neither with the spear or the breast plate. ^{27 (41:18)} For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood. ^{28 (41:19)} The bow of brass shall not wound him, he deems a slinger as grass. ^{29 (41:20)} Mauls are counted as stubble; and he laughs to scorn the waving of the firebrand. ^{30 (41:21)} His lair is formed of sharp points, and all the gold of the sea under him is an immense quantity of clay. ^{31 (41:22)} He makes the deep boil like a bronze caldron, and he regards the sea as a pot of ointment, ^{32 (41:23)} and the lowest part of the deep as a captive: he reckons the deep as his range. ^{33 (41:24)} There is nothing upon the earth like him, formed to be sported with by My angels. ^{34 (41:25)} He beholds every high thing, and he is king of all that are in the waters.

² But the earth was unsightly and unfurnished, and darkness was over the deep, and the Spirit of God moved over the water.

¹⁵ And let them be for light in the firmament of the heaven, so as to shine upon the earth, and it was so.

²⁵ And God made the wild beasts of the earth according to their kind, and cattle according to their kind, and all the reptiles of the earth according to their kind, and God saw that they were good.

²⁸ And God blessed them, saying, Increase and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the seas and flying creatures of heaven, and all the cattle and all the earth, and all the reptiles that creep on the earth.

¹⁵ But you shall depart to your fathers in peace, nourished in a good old age.

⁸ Then Abraham breathed his last, and died in a good old age, an old man and full of days, and was added to his people.

³⁸ But he said, My son shall not go down with you, because his brother is dead, and only he has been left; and suppose it shall come to pass that he is afflicted by the way by which you go, then you shall bring down my old age with sorrow to Hades.

⁹ Judah is a lion's whelp: from the tender plant, my son, you have gone up. Having couched, you lie down like a lion, and as a whelp; who shall stir him up?

² And Pharaoh said, Who is He that I should listen to His voice, so that I should send away the children of Israel? I do not know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.

⁵ And now if you will indeed hear My voice, and keep My covenant, you shall be to Me a peculiar people above all nations; for the whole earth is Mine.

⁶ his master shall bring him to the judgment seat of God, and then shall he bring him to the door, to the doorpost, and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him forever.

⁹ He lies down, he rests as a lion; and as a young lion, who shall rouse him? Those that bless you are blessed, and those that curse you are cursed.

¹⁴ Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the Lord your God, the earth and all things that are in it.

¹⁷ then you shall take an awl, and bore his ear through to the door, and he shall be your servant forever; and in like manner shall you do to your male servant.

³⁴ And you shall be distracted, because of the sights of your eyes which you shall see.

¹¹ And it came to pass when they saw him, that they took thirty guests, and they were with him.

²⁵ And when their heart was merry, then they said, Call Sampson out of the prison house, and let him play before us. And they called Sampson out of the prison house, and he played before them; and they struck him with the palms of their hands, and set him between the pillars. ²⁶ And Sampson said to the young man that held his hand, Allow me to feel the pillars on which the house rests, and I will lean myself upon them. ²⁷ And the house was full of men and women, and there were all the chiefs of the Philistines, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women looking at the sports of Sampson. ²⁸ And Sampson wept before the Lord, and said, O Lord, my Lord, remember me, I pray, and strengthen me, O God, just this once, and I will be avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes. ²⁹ And Sampson took hold of the two pillars on which the house stood, and leaned on them, and laid hold of one with his right hand, and the other with his left. ³⁰ And Sampson said, Let my wife perish with the Philistines. And he bowed himself mightily; and the house fell upon the princes, and upon all the people that were in it. And the dead whom Sampson slew in his death were more than those whom he slew in his life.

¹¹ And the Lord said to Samuel, Behold, I execute My words in Israel; whoever hears them, both his ears shall tingle.

And he said, Does he yet live? He is my brother. ³³ And the men divined, and offered drink offerings; and they caught the word out of his mouth, and said, Your brother the son of Hadad. And he said, Go in and fetch him. And the son of Hadad went out to him, and they caused him to go up to him into the chariot. ³⁴ And he said to him, The cities which my father took from your father I will restore to you; and you shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made streets in Samaria; and I will let you go with a covenant. And he made a covenant with him, and let him go.

⁴ And they feared greatly, and said, Behold, two kings stood not before him, and how shall we stand?

²⁸ Because you were angry against Me, and your fierceness has come up into My ears, therefore will I put My hooks in your nostrils, and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way in which you came.

¹¹ Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the might; for You are Lord of all things that are in heaven and upon the earth; before Your face every king and nation is troubled. ¹² From You come wealth and glory. You, O Lord, rule over all, the Lord of all dominion, and in Your hand is strength and rule; and You are almighty with Your hand to increase and establish all things. ¹³ And now, O Lord, we give thanks to You, and praise Your glorious name. ¹⁴ But who am I, and what is my people, that we have been able to be thus forward in offering to You? For all things are Yours, and of Your own have we given You,

¹⁴ And Uzziah prepared for them, even for all the army, shields, spears, helmets, breastplates, bows, and slings for stones.

⁸ But let him that curses that day curse it, even he that is ready to attack the Great Whale. ⁹ Let the stars of that night be darkened; let it remain dark, and not come into light; and let it not see the morning star arise:

⁴ For He is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against Him and endured?

² Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge? ³ For what does it matter to the Lord, if you were blameless in your works? Or is it profitable that you should perfect your way?

¹² He has calmed the sea with His might, and by His wisdom the whale has been overthrown.

⁸ Neither have the sons of the proud trodden it, a lion has not passed upon it.

¹¹ And he has laid bare the depths of rivers, and has brought his power to light.

¹⁴ The depth said, It is not in me, and the sea said, It is not with me.

⁷ And suppose you are righteous, what will you give Him? Or what shall He receive from your hand?

¹⁰ And I set bounds to it, surrounding it with bars and gates.

¹⁶ Or have you gone to the source of the sea, and walked in the tracks of the deep?

³⁰ which descends like flowing water? Who has terrified the face of the ungodly?

⁷ He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and hears not the chiding of the tax-gatherer.

¹⁹ Have you invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror?

²¹ He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain. ²² He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword. ²³ The bow and sword resound against him, and his rage will swallow up the ground; ²⁴ and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds.

^{9 (40:4)} Have you an arm like the Lord's? Or can you thunder with a voice like His?

^{16 (40:11)} Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

^{19 (40:14)} This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by His angels.

¹¹ Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice in Him with trembling. ¹² Accept correction, lest at any time the Lord be angry, and you should perish from the righteous way. Whenever His wrath shall be suddenly kindled, blessed are all they that trust in Him.

⁵ You made him a little lower than the angels, You have crowned him with glory and honor; ⁶ and You have set him over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet:

⁸ There went up a smoke in His wrath, and fire burst into a flame at His presence; coals were kindled at it.

¹² At the brightness before Him the clouds passed, hail and coals of fire.

³ For You have blessed him with blessings of goodness; You have set upon his head a crown of precious stone.

¹ A Psalm of David on the first day of the week. The earth is the Lord's and all its fullness; the world, and all that dwell in it.

⁹ Be not as the horse and mule, which have no understanding; but you must constrain their jaws with bit and bridle, lest they should come near to you.

¹² If I should be hungry, I will not tell you; for the world is Mine, and all its fullness.

²¹ They were scattered at the anger of His countenance, and his heart drew near to them. His words were smoother than oil, yet they are darts.

⁴ and He has delivered my soul from the midst of the lion's whelps; I lay down to sleep, though troubled. As for the sons of men, their teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁶ God has crushed their teeth in their mouth; God has broken the teeth of the lions.

⁶ Therefore pride has possessed them; they have clothed themselves with their injustice and ungodliness.

¹⁰ Therefore shall my people return here, and full days shall be found with them.

¹⁴ You broke to pieces the heads of the dragon; You gave him as meat to the Ethiopian nations.

²⁶ There go the ships; and this dragon whom You have made to play in it.

²⁸ Then they cry to the Lord in their affliction, and He brings them out of their distresses.

¹⁶ The heaven of heavens belongs to the Lord; but He has given the earth to the sons of men.

¹ Anger slays even wise men, yet a submissive answer turns away wrath; but a grievous word stirs up anger.

³¹ Old age is a crown of honor, but it is found in the ways of righteousness.

²⁹ Wisdom is an ornament to young men, and gray hairs are the glory of old men.

¹⁵ In long suffering is prosperity to kings, and a soft tongue breaks the bones.

¹⁴ A wicked generation have swords for teeth and jaw-teeth as knives, so as to destroy and devour the lowly from the earth, and the poor of them from among men.

⁴ and they shall shut the doors in the marketplace, because of the weakness of the voice of her that grinds at the mill; and he shall rise up at the voice of the sparrow, and all the daughters of song shall be brought low;

¹ In that day God shall bring His holy and great and strong sword upon the dragon, even the serpent that flees, upon the dragon, the crooked serpent; He shall destroy the dragon.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride, the hirelings of Ephraim, the flower that has fallen from the glory of the top of the fertile mountain, they that are drunken without wine.

¹⁹ Whenever it shall pass by, it shall overtake you; morning by morning it shall pass by in the day, and in the night there shall be an evil hope.

¹⁰ who say to the prophets, Report not to us; and to them that see visions, Speak them not to us, but speak and report to us another error;

³³ For you shall be required before your time; has it been prepared for you also to reign? No, God has prepared for you a deep trench, wood piled, fire and much wood; the wrath of the Lord shall be as a trench kindled with sulphur.

²⁹ And your wrath in which you have been enraged, and your rage has come up before Me; therefore I will put a hook in your nose, and a bit in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way which you came.

¹⁵ Behold, I have made you as new saw-shaped threshing wheels of a wagon; and you shall thresh the mountains, and beat the hills to powder, and make them as chaff;

⁴ I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your forehead bronze.

¹³ And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, What do you see? And I said, A caldron on the fire; and the face of it is toward the north. ¹⁴ And the Lord said to me, From the north shall flame forth evils upon all the inhabitants of the land.

³ O Lord, Your eyes are upon faithfulness. You have scourged them, but they have not grieved; You have consumed them; but they would not receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock; and they would not return.

²³ Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, and let not the strong man boast in his strength, and let not the rich man boast in his wealth;

⁵ Your feet run, and they cause you to faint; how will you prepare to ride upon horses? And you have been confident in the land of your peace? How will you do in the roaring of the Jordan?

¹⁷ And He said to me, Son of man, you have seen this. Is it a trivial thing to the house of Judah to practice the iniquities which they have practiced here? For they have filled the land with iniquity; and behold, these are as scorners. ¹⁸ Therefore will I deal with them in wrath: My eye shall not spare, nor will I have any mercy.

³ and say, Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am against you O Pharaoh, the great dragon that lies in the midst of his rivers, that says, The rivers are mine, and I made them. ⁴ And I will put hooks in your jaws, and I will cause the fish of your river to stick to your sides, and I will bring you up out of the midst of your river; ⁵ and I will quickly cast you down, and all the fish of your river. You shall fall on the face of the plain, and shall by no means be gathered, and shall not be brought together; I have given you for food to the wild beasts of the earth and to the fowls of the sky.

⁷ After this one I looked, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and exceedingly strong, and its teeth were of iron; devouring and crushing to atoms, and it trampled the remainder with its feet. And it was altogether different from the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

¹⁴ I will deliver them out of the power of Hades, and will redeem them from death. O death, where is your punishment? O Hades, where is your sting? Comfort is hidden from My eyes.

⁴ And the Lord raised up a wind on the sea; and there was a great storm on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being broken. ⁵ And the sailors were alarmed, and cried everyone to his god, and cast out the wares that were in the ship into the sea, that it might be lightened of them. But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship, and was asleep, and snored. ⁶ And the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, Why do you snore? Arise, and call upon your God, that God may save us, and we perish not.

¹⁰ And he shall be at his ease with kings, and princes are his toys, and he shall mock at every stronghold, and shall cast a mound, and take possession of it.

⁵ Before His face shall go a report, and it shall go forth into the plains,

¹² And they made their heart disobedient, so as not to hearken to My law, and the words which the Lord Almighty sent forth by His Spirit by the former prophets: so there was great wrath from the Lord Almighty.

³¹ Or what king, going to engage another king in battle, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks the terms for peace.

¹¹ And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful events and great signs from heaven.

³⁵ "Or who has first given to Him, and it shall be repaid to him?"

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?

²⁶ for "The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness."

²⁸ But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for his conscience' sake; for "The earth is the LORD's, and all its fullness."

⁵⁵ "O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?" ⁵⁶ Now the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

³ Consider that we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

¹⁴ And His head and His hair were white, and like white wool, like snow, and His eyes were like a flame of fire;

² Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and to break its seals?" ³ And no one in heaven above or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, nor to look at it.

⁵ But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome, to open the scroll and its seven seals."

¹ And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman having been clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. ² And being pregnant, she was crying out, being in labor and being in great pain to give birth. ³ And another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great, fiery dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns on his heads.

² And the Beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.

² And he seized the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, he who deceives the whole world, and he bound him for a thousand years; ³ and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and locked and sealed it over him, so that he should deceive the nations no more until the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a short time.
