¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, ² Have you been often spoken to in distress? But who shall endure the force of your words? ³ For seeing you have instructed many, and have strengthened the hands of the weak one, ⁴ and have supported the failing with words, and have imparted courage to feeble knees. ⁵ Yet now that pain has come upon you, and touched you, you are troubled. ⁶ Is not your fear founded in folly, your hope also, and the mischief of your way? ⁷ Remember then who has perished, being pure? Or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed? ⁸ Accordingly, as I have seen men plowing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves. ⁹ They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of His wrath. ¹⁰ The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched. ¹¹ The old lion has perished for want of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another. ¹² But if there had been any truth in your words, none of these evils would have befallen you. Shall not my ear receive excellent revelations from Him? ¹³ But as when terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night, ¹⁴ horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake. ¹⁵ And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered. ¹⁶ I arose and perceived it not. I looked, and there was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, saying, ¹⁷ What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? Or a man be blameless in regard to his works? ¹⁸ Since he trusts not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels. ¹⁹ But as for them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, He smites them like a moth. ²⁰ And from the morning to evening they no longer exist — they have perished, because they cannot help themselves. ²¹ For He blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.

¹ There was a certain man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was true, blameless, righteous, and godly, abstaining from everything evil.

⁸ And the Lord said to him, Have you diligently considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on all the earth, a blameless man, true, godly, abstaining from everything evil? ⁹ Then the devil answered, and said before the Lord, Does Job worship the Lord for nothing? ¹⁰ Have You not made a hedge about him, and about his household, and all his possessions round about? And have You not blessed the works of his hands, and multiplied his substance upon the land? ¹¹ But put forth Your hand, and touch all that he has, and he will curse You to Your face.

¹⁹ suddenly a great wind came from across the desert, and caught the four corners of the house, and the house fell upon your children, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped, and have come to tell you.

⁵ Ah, but put forth Your hand, and touch his bones and his flesh — surely he will curse You to Your face!

¹¹ Now his three friends, having heard of all the evil that had come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Temans, Bildad sovereign of the Shuhites, and Zophar, king of the Minaeans. And they came to him with one accord, to comfort him, and to visit him.

¹ After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed the day of his birth, ² saying,

²⁵ For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, and that which I had feared has befallen me. ²⁶ I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; yet wrath came upon me.

¹⁵ And let them perish in war, and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty.

¹ But Job answered and said,

¹⁴ Mercy has rejected me; and the visitation of the Lord has disregarded me.

¹⁴ You scare me with dreams, and terrify me with visions.

¹ Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, and said,

³ Will the Lord be unjust when He judges; or will He that has made all things pervert justice?

³ Will the Lord be unjust when He judges; or will He that has made all things pervert justice? ⁴ If your sons have sinned before Him, He has cast them away because of their transgression.

²⁰ For the Lord will by no means reject the harmless man; but He will not receive any gift of the ungodly.

²² But their adversaries shall clothe themselves with shame; and the habitation of the ungodly shall perish.

² Truly I know it is so, for how shall a mortal man be righteous before the Lord?

²² Wherefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man. ²³ For the worthless die, but the righteous are laughed to scorn.

³⁰ For if I should wash myself with snow, and purge myself with pure hands, ³¹ You had thoroughly plunged me in filth, and my garment has abhorred me.

⁹ Remember that You have made me as clay, and You turn me again into dust.

¹² And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body like a body of clay.

¹⁵ Though the Mighty One should lay His hand upon me, forasmuch as He has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before Him.

²⁸ I am as that which grows old like a bottle, or like a moth-eaten garment.

⁴ For who shall be pure from uncleanness? Not even one;

¹⁴ For if a man should die, shall he live again, having accomplished the days of his life? I will wait till I exist again.

²⁰ You drive him to an end, and he is gone: You set Your face against him, and send him away;

¹⁴ For who, being a mortal, is such that he shall be blameless? Or who that is born of a woman, that he should be just? ¹⁵ Forasmuch as He trusts not His saints, and the heaven is not pure before Him. ¹⁶ Alas then, abominable and unclean is man, drinking unrighteousness as a draught.

³⁰ And he shall by no means escape the darkness: let the wind blast his blossom, and let his flower fall off.

³⁵ And he shall conceive sorrows, and his end shall be vanity, and his belly shall bear deceit.

¹⁵ Where then is yet my hope? Or where shall I see my good?

²¹ These are the houses of the unrighteous, and this is the place of them that know not the Lord.

¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

¹⁶ Who were seized before their time — their foundations are as an overflowing stream.

¹¹ And I will go forth according to His commandments, for I have kept His ways; and I shall not turn aside from His commandments, ¹² neither shall I transgress; but I have hid His words in my bosom.

⁴ For how shall a mortal be just before the Lord? Or who that is born of a woman shall purify himself? ⁵ If He gives an order to the moon, then it shines not; and the stars are not pure before Him. ⁶ But alas! Man is corruption, and the son of man a worm.

¹⁴ Behold, these are parts of His way; and we will hearken to Him at the least intimation of His word: but who knows the strength of His thunder, when He shall employ it?

⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you till I die! For I will not let go my innocence, ⁶ but keeping fast to my righteousness, I will by no means let it go: for I am not conscious to myself of having done anything amiss.

¹⁴ And if their children are many, they shall be for slaughter: and if they grow up, they shall beg. ¹⁵ And they that survive of him shall utterly perish, and no one shall pity their widows.

¹² For I saved the poor out of the hand of the oppressor, and helped the fatherless who had no helper. ¹³ Let the blessing of the perishing one come upon me; yea, the mouth of the widow has blessed me. ¹⁴ Also I put on righteousness, and clothed myself with judgment like a mantle. ¹⁵ I was the eye of the blind, and the foot of the lame. ¹⁶ I was the father of the helpless, and I searched out the cause which I knew not. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked; I plucked the spoil out of the midst of their teeth.

Destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity! ⁴ Will He not see my way, and number all my steps? ⁵ But if I had gone with scorners, and if my foot too has hastened to deceit: ⁶ (for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:) ⁷ if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if my heart has followed my eye, and if I too have touched gifts with my hands; ⁸ then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth. ⁹ If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors; ¹⁰ then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low. ¹¹ For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, in the case of defiling another man's wife. ¹² For it is a fire burning on every side, and whoever it attacks, it utterly destroys. ¹³ And if I also despised the judgment of my servant or my handmaid, when they pleaded with me; ¹⁴ what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? And if also He should at all visit me, can I make an answer? ¹⁵ Were not they formed too, as I also was formed in the womb? Yea, we were formed in the same womb. ¹⁶ But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail. ¹⁷ And if I also ate my morsel alone, and did not impart of it to the orphan; ¹⁸ (for I nourished them as a father from my youth and guided them from my mother's womb.) ¹⁹ And if I too overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him; ²⁰ and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs; ²¹ if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior to his: ²² then let my shoulder start from the blade bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow. ²³ For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of His burden. ²⁴ If I made gold my treasure, and if I too trusted the precious stone; ²⁵ and if I also rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if I laid my hand on innumerable treasures: ²⁶ (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? For they have not power to continue:) ²⁷ and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it: ²⁸ let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I should have lied against the Lord Most High. ²⁹ And if I too was glad at the fall of my enemies, and my heart said, Aha! ³⁰ Then let my ear hear my curse, and let me be a byword among my people in my affliction. ³¹ And if my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind: ³² for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to everyone that came:) ³³ or if also having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin; ³⁴ (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them:) and if I also permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom — ³⁵ (Oh that I had a hearer!) And if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and as to the written charge which I had against anyone, ³⁶ I would place it as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it. ³⁷ And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor: ³⁸ If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together; ³⁹ and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if I too grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking from him, ⁴⁰ then let the thistles come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.

¹⁸ for I am full of words, for the spirit within me destroys me. ¹⁹ And my belly is as a skin of sweet wine, bound up and ready to burst; or as a brazier's laboring bellows. ²⁰ I will speak, that I may open my lips and relieve myself.

⁶ You are formed out of the clay as I also: we have been formed out of the same substance.

¹⁴ For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time, ¹⁵ sending a dream, or in the meditation of the night (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, while sleeping on the bed), ¹⁶ then He opens the understanding of men: He scares them with such fearful visions;

¹⁹ And again, He chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones are pained.

² What is this that you think is right? Who are you that you have said, I am righteous before the Lord?

¹⁰ But none said, Where is God that made me, who appoints the night watches;

⁷ He will not turn away His eyes from the righteous, but they shall be with kings on the throne, and He will establish them in triumph, and they shall be exalted.

¹² But He preserves not the ungodly; because they are not willing to know the Lord, and because, when reproved, they were disobedient.

³⁹ And will you hunt a prey for the lions? And satisfy the desires of the serpents?

^{8 (40:3)} Do not set aside My judgment: and do you think that I have dealt with you in any other way, than that you might appear to be righteous?

^{13 (40:8)} And hide them together in the earth, and fill their faces with shame.

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Minaean, went and did as the Lord commanded them: and He pardoned their sin for the sake of Job.

⁷ Arise, O Lord; deliver me, my God; for You have struck all who were my enemies without cause; You have broken the teeth of sinners.

² lest at any time the enemy seize my soul as a lion, while there is none to ransom, nor to save.

¹⁴ Behold, the wicked has travailed with unrighteousness; he has conceived trouble, and has brought forth iniquity. ¹⁵ He has opened a pit, and dug it up, and he shall fall into the ditch which he has made. ¹⁶ His trouble shall return on his own head, and his unrighteousness shall come down on his own crown.

¹⁵ And the springs of waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed, at Your rebuke, O Lord, at the blasting of the breath of Your wrath.

¹⁰ The rich have become poor and hungry; but they that seek the Lord diligently shall not lack any good thing. Pause.

²⁵ I was once young, indeed I am now old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed seeking bread.

³⁶ Yet I passed by, and lo! He was not; and I sought him, but his place was not found.

⁵ Behold, You have made my days old; and my existence is as nothing before You; indeed, every man living is altogether vanity. Pause.

¹¹ You chasten man with rebukes for iniquity, and You make his life to consume away like a spider's web; nay, every man is disquieted in vain. Pause.

¹³ Spare me, that I may be refreshed, before I depart, and be no more.

¹⁴ They have laid them as sheep in Hades; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their help shall fail in Hades from their glory.

²⁰ Man that is in honor, understands not; he is compared to the senseless cattle, and is likened unto them.

⁴ and He has delivered my soul from the midst of the lion's whelps; I lay down to sleep, though troubled. As for the sons of men, their teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

¹ I saw that the righteous, the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God. Yea, there is no man that knows either love or hatred, though all are before their face. ² Vanity is in all. There is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good, and to the bad; both to the pure, and to the impure; both to him that sacrifices, and to him that does not sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; as is the swearer, even so is he that fears an oath.

³ Therefore are my loins filled with feebleness, and pangs have seized me as a travailing woman; I dealt wrongfully that I might not hear; I hastened that I might not see. ⁴ My heart wanders, and transgression overwhelms me; my soul is occupied with fear.

³³ For you shall be required before your time; has it been prepared for you also to reign? No, God has prepared for you a deep trench, wood piled, fire and much wood; the wrath of the Lord shall be as a trench kindled with sulphur.

⁴ The Lord, even God, gives me the tongue of instruction, to know when it is fit to speak a word; He has appointed for me early, He has given me an ear to hear;

⁷ The lion has gone up from his lair, he has roused himself to the destruction of the nations, and has gone forth out of his place, to make the land desolate; and the cities shall be destroyed, so as to be without inhabitant.

¹⁸ Your ways and your devices have brought these things upon you; this is your wickedness, for it is bitter, for it has reached to your heart.

¹¹ And I allowed My wrath to come to full, yet I kept it in, and did not utterly destroy them. I will pour it out on the children outside, and on the assembly of young men together; for man and woman shall be taken together, the old man with him that is full of days.

¹ Righteous are You, O Lord, that I may make my defense to You: yet I will speak to You of judgments. Why is it that the way of the ungodly prospers? And all that deal very treacherously are flourishing?

⁹ The heart is deep beyond all things, and it constitutes the man, and who can know him?

⁹ Then I said, I will by no means name the name of the Lord, and I will no longer speak in His name. But it was a burning fire flaming in my bones, and I am utterly weakened on all sides, and cannot bear up.

²² Because you have perverted the heart of the righteous, whereas I perverted him not, and that in order to strengthen the hands of the wicked, that he should not at all turn from his evil way and live:

¹⁹ Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision; and Daniel blessed the God of heaven, and said,

²⁸ But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what things must come to pass in the last days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed are as follows: ²⁹ O king: your thoughts upon your bed arose as to what must come to pass hereafter: and He that reveals mysteries has made known to you what must come to pass.

⁵ I saw a vision and it terrified me, and I was troubled on my bed, and the visions of my head troubled me.

⁶ Then the king's countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, and the joints of his hips were loosed, and his knees knocked one another.

¹⁸ And while he spoke with me, I fell upon my face to the earth. And he touched me, and set me on my feet.

⁹ Yet I heard the voice of his words; and when I heard him I was cut to the heart, and I fell with my face to the earth.

¹¹ And he said to me, O Daniel, man greatly beloved, understand the words which I speak to you, and stand upright, for I am now sent to you. And when he had spoken to me this word, I stood trembling.

⁷ For they sowed blighted seed, and their destruction shall await them, a sheaf of corn that avails not to make meal; and even if it should produce it, strangers shall devour it.

¹² Sow to yourselves for righteousness, gather in for the fruit of life: light for yourselves the light of knowledge; seek the Lord till the fruits of righteousness come upon you. ¹³ For have you passed over ungodliness in silence, and reaped the sins of it? You have eaten false fruit; for you has trusted in your sins, in the abundance of your power.

¹⁰ I will go after the Lord: He shall utter His voice as a lion. For He shall roar, and the children of the waters shall be amazed.

¹⁶ I watched, and my belly trembled at the sound of the prayer of my lips, and trembling entered into my bones, and my frame was troubled within me; I will rest in the day of affliction, from going up to the people of my sojourning.

²⁶ And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear.

²⁰ And He said, "That which comes out of a man, that defiles a man. ²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, come forth evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, arrogance, foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within and defile a man."

¹² And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

²⁹ But when she saw him, she was greatly perplexed by his saying, and she wondered what sort of greeting this was.

²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have prepared?'

²² And it came to pass that the beggar died, and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. ²³ And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham from afar, and Lazarus in his bosom.

³² But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

⁴³ Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.

³⁷ But being alarmed and becoming fearful, they thought they saw a spirit. ³⁸ And He said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have."

²⁰ For we can do none other but to speak the things which we saw and heard.

⁴ And when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "Certainly this man is a murderer, whom though he was rescued from the sea, justice does not permit to continue living."

⁵ But according to your hardness and impenitent heart you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God,

⁴ Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar, just as it is written: "That You may be justified in Your words, and You may overcome when You are judged." ⁵ But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Surely God, the One inflicting wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I speak as a man.) ⁶ Certainly not! For otherwise how shall God judge the world? ⁷ For if by my lie the truth of God has abounded to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

²⁰ But indeed, O man, who are you to be answering back against God? Surely the thing formed will not say to him who formed it, "Why did you made me like this?"

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and untraceable are His ways!

¹² For now we see through a mirror by reflection, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

⁴ For out of much affliction and distress of heart I wrote to you, through many tears, not that you might be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have more abundantly towards you. ⁵ Now if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but in part--lest I burden you all. ⁶ Sufficient to such a person is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority, ⁷ so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest somehow such a person be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

¹ Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we received mercy, we do not despair,

⁷ But we have this treasure in clay vessels, so that the extraordinary character of the power may be of God and not of us;

¹⁶ Therefore we do not despair, but even if our outward man is being destroyed, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

¹ For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made by hand, eternal in the heavens.

⁶ Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,

⁸ Because even if I made you sorry in the letter, I do not regret it, even if I did regret it. For I perceive that the same letter made you sorry, though only for a season. ⁹ Now I rejoice, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led to repentance; for you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. ¹⁰ For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, without regret; but worldly sorrow produces death.

⁶ But this I say: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

⁷ Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for what a man sows, this also he will reap. ⁸ For he who sows to his flesh, from his own flesh will reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap everlasting life.

²⁹ Let no corrupt word proceed from your mouth, but only what is good for edification, that it may give grace to them that hear.

⁶ Let your word always be with grace, having been seasoned with salt, to know how you ought to answer each one.

¹⁴ Now we exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the discouraged, be supportive of the weak, be patient toward all.

⁸ And then the lawless one will be unveiled, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth, and will destroy by the brightness of His coming,

¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fulfilled, and all the Gentiles might hear, and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

⁷ And on the one hand he says to the angels, "He who makes His angels spirits and His ministers flames of fire."

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits being sent out to minister for the sake of those who are about to inherit salvation?

³ For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you be weary and discouraged in your souls.

⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: "My son, do not despise the discipline of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are reproved;

¹² Therefore strengthen the hands which are weakened, and the feeble knees,

¹¹ For the sun arose with burning heat and withered the grass, and its flower fell off, and its beautiful appearance perished. So the rich man also shall fade away in his pursuits.

¹³ Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, stay sober, put your hope fully in the grace brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

¹⁷ And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear;

²⁴ For "All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man is as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away,

⁴ For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but rather confined them to Tartarus, and delivered them into chains of darkness, reserved for judgment;

⁹ then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and how to keep the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,

⁶ And the angels who did not keep their own domain, but rather having left their own habitation, He has kept with everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;

¹⁷ And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as if dead. But He put His right hand on me, saying, "Do not fear; I am the First and the Last.

¹⁶ Repent therefore! Or else I will come to you quickly, and make war against them with the sword of My mouth.

⁸ And the four living beings, each one having six wings apiece, were full of eyes around and within. And they never rest day or night, saying, "Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, He who was, and who is, and who is to come!"
