³¹ One shall rush, running to meet another runner, and one shall go with tidings to meet another with tidings, to bring tidings to the king of Babylon, that his city is taken.

¹² And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the battle, and he came to Shiloh on that day. And his clothes were torn, and dust was upon his head. ¹³ And he came, and behold, Eli was upon the seat by the gate looking along the way, for his heart was greatly alarmed for the ark of God. And the man entered into the city to bring news, and the city cried out. ¹⁴ And Eli heard the sound of the cry, and said, What is the voice of this cry? And the men hastened and went in, and reported to Eli. ¹⁵ Now Eli was ninety years old, and his eyes were so dim that he could not see. ¹⁶ And Eli said to them that stood round about him, What is the voice of this sound? And the man hastened and advanced to Eli, and said to him, I am he that has come out of the camp, and I have fled from the battle today. And Eli said, What has happened, my son? ¹⁷ And they young man answered and said, The men of Israel fled from the face of the Philistines, and there was a great slaughter among the people, and both your sons are dead, and the ark of God has been taken. ¹⁸ And it came to pass, when he mentioned the ark of God, that he fell from the seat backward near the gate, and his back was broken, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. And he judged Israel twenty years.

¹⁹ And Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, Let me run now and carry the good news to the king, for the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies. ²⁰ And Joab said to him, You shall not be a messenger of good news this day; you shall bear them another day; but on this day you shall bear no news, because the king's son is dead. ²¹ And Joab said to Hushai, Go, report to the king all that you have seen. And Hushai bowed down before Joab and went out. ²² And Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said again to Joab, No, let me also run after Hushai. And Joab said, Why would you thus run, my son? Attend, you have no news for profit if you go. ²³ And he said, Why should I not run? And Joab said to him, Run. And Ahimaaz ran along the way of Kechar, and outran Hushai. ²⁴ And David was sitting between the two gates. And the watchman went up on the top of the gate of the wall, and lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was running alone before him. ²⁵ And the watchman cried out, and reported to the king. And the king said, If he is alone, he has good news in his mouth. And the man came and drew near. ²⁶ And the watchman saw another man running. And the watchman cried at the gate, and said, Behold, another man is running alone. And the king said, He also brings good news. ²⁷ And the watchman said, I see the running of the first as the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and will come to report good news. ²⁸ And Ahimaaz cried out and said to the king, Peace. And he bowed down to the king with his face to the ground, and said, Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delivered up the men that lifted up their hands against my lord the king. ²⁹ And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz said, I saw a great multitude at the time of Joab's sending the king's servant and your servant, and I knew not what was there. ³⁰ And the king said, Turn aside, stand still here. And he turned aside, and stood. ³¹ And, behold, Hushai came up, and said to the king, Let my lord the king hear the good news, for the Lord has avenged you this day upon all them that rose up against you.

⁶ And the posts went with the letters from the king and the princes to all Israel and Judah, according to the command of the king, saying, Children of Israel, return to the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and bring back them that have escaped, even those that were left of the hand of the king of Assyria.

¹³ And the message was sent by posts throughout the kingdom of Artaxerxes, to utterly destroy the race of the Jews on the first day of the twelfth month, which is Adar, and to plunder their goods. And the following is the copy of the letter: The great King Artaxerxes writes thus to the rulers and inferior governors of a hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India even to Ethiopia, who hold authority under him. Ruling over many nations, and having obtained dominion over the whole world, I was minded, (not elated by the confidence of power but ever conducting myself with great moderation and with gentleness) to make the lives of my subjects continually tranquil, desiring both to maintain the kingdom quite and orderly to its utmost limits, and to restore the peace desired by all men. But when I had inquired of my counselors how this should be brought to pass, Haman, who excels in sound judgment among us, and has been manifestly well inclined without wavering and with unshaken fidelity, and has obtained the second post in the kingdom, informed us that a certain ill-disposed people is mixed up with all the tribes throughout the world, opposed in their laws to every other nation, and continually neglecting the commands of the kings, so that the united government blamelessly administered by us is not quietly established. Having then conceived that this nation alone of all others is continually set in opposition to every man, introducing as a change a foreign code of laws, and injuriously plotting to accomplish the worst of evils against our interests, and against the happy establishment of the monarchy; we have accordingly appointed those who are signified to you in the letters written by Haman, who is set over the public affairs and is our second governor, to utterly destroy them all with their wives and children by the swords of the enemies, without pitying or sparing any, on the fourteenth day of the twelfth month (which is Adar) of the present year; that the people aforetime and now ill-disposed to us having been violently consigned to death in one day, may hereafter secure to us continually a well- constituted and quiet state of affairs. ¹⁴ And the copies of the letters were published in every province; and an order was given to all the nations to be ready against that day. ¹⁵ And the business was hastened, and that at Susa. And the king and Haman began to drink, but the city was troubled.

¹⁰ And they were written by order of the king, and sealed with his ring, and they sent the letters by couriers.

¹⁴ So the horsemen went forth with haste to perform the king's commands; and the ordinance was also published in Susa.

²⁵ But my life is swifter than a post: my days have fled away, and they knew it not.

³ Therefore are my loins filled with feebleness, and pangs have seized me as a travailing woman; I dealt wrongfully that I might not hear; I hastened that I might not see. ⁴ My heart wanders, and transgression overwhelms me; my soul is occupied with fear. ⁵ Prepare the table; eat, drink. Arise, you princes, and prepare your shields. ⁶ For thus said the Lord to me, Go and station a watchman for yourself, and declare whatever you shall see. ⁷ And I saw two mounted horsemen, and a rider on a donkey, and a rider on a camel. ⁸ Hearken with great attention, and call Uriah to the watchtower; the Lord has spoken. I stood continually during the day, and I stood in the camp all night; ⁹ and behold, he comes riding in a chariot and pair; and he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all her images and her idols have been crushed to the ground.

¹¹ And destruction shall come upon you, and you shall not be aware; there shall be a pit, and you shall fall into it; and grief shall come upon you, and you shall not be able to be clear; and destruction shall come suddenly upon you, and you shall not know. ¹² Stand now with your enchantments, and with the abundance of your sorcery, which you have learned from your youth; if you can be profited. ¹³ You are wearied in your counsels. Let now the astrologers of the heaven stand and deliver you, let them that see the stars tell you what is about to come upon you.

²⁰ For all the land is distressed. Suddenly my tabernacle is distressed, my curtains have been torn in two.

²⁴ They shall come upon you, and you shall not know it, O Babylon, that you will even be taken captive. You are found and taken, because you resisted the Lord.

⁴³ The king of Babylon heard the sound of them, and his hands grew feeble. Anguish overcame him, pangs as of a woman in travail.

² And Belshazzar, drinking, gave orders as he tasted the wine that they should bring the gold and silver vessels, which Nebuchadnezzar his father had brought forth from the temple in Jerusalem; that the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines, should drink out of them. ³ So the gold and silver vessels were brought which Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple of God in Jerusalem; and the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines drank out of them. ⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, and of brass, and of iron, and of wood, and of stone. ⁵ In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote in front of the lamp on the plaster of the wall of the king's house: and the king saw the knuckles of the hand that wrote.

³⁰ In the same night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.
