⁹ Woe to him that covets an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evils.

¹⁰ And Lot, having lifted up his eyes, observed all the country round about the Jordan, that it was all watered, before God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, as the garden of the Lord, and as the land of Egypt, until you come to Zoar. ¹¹ And Lot chose for himself all the country round the Jordan, and Lot went from the east, and they were separated each from his brother. And Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan. ¹² And Lot dwelt in a city of the neighboring people, and pitched his tent in Sodom. ¹³ But the men of Sodom were evil, and exceedingly sinful before God.

²⁶ And his wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. ²⁷ And Abraham rose up early to go to the place where he had stood before the Lord. ²⁸ And he looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah, and towards the surrounding country, and saw, and behold, a flame went up from the earth, as the smoke of a furnace. ²⁹ And it came to pass, that when God destroyed all the cities of the region round about, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when the Lord overthrew those cities in which Lot dwelt. ³⁰ And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, he and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Zoar; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters with him. ³¹ And the elder said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is no one on the earth who shall come in to us, as it is fit in all the earth. ³² Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us sleep with him, and let us raise up seed from our father. ³³ So they made their father drink wine in that night, and the elder went in and lay with her father that night, and he knew not when he slept and when he rose up. ³⁴ And it came to pass on the next day, that the elder said to the younger, Behold, I slept last night with our father, let us make him drink wine in this night also, and you go in and sleep with him, and let us raise up seed of our father. ³⁵ So they made their father drink wine in that night also, and the younger went in and slept with her father, and he knew not when he slept, nor when he arose. ³⁶ And the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father. ³⁷ And the elder bore a son and called his name Moab, saying, He is of my father. This is the father of the Moabites to this present day. ³⁸ And the younger also bore a son, and called his name Ammon, saying, The son of my family. This is the father of the Ammonites to this present day.

²⁵ You shall burn with fire the graven images of their gods: you shall not covet their silver, neither shall you take to yourself gold from them, lest you should offend thereby, because it is an abomination to the Lord your God. ²⁶ And you shall not bring an abomination into your house, so should you be an accursed thing like it; you shall utterly detest it, and altogether abominate it, because it is an accursed thing.

²¹ I saw in the spoil an embroidered mantle, and two hundred shekels of silver, and one golden wedge of fifty shekels, and I desired them and took them; and behold, they are hid in my tent, and the silver is hid under them. ²² And Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent into the camp; and these things were hidden in his tent, and the silver under them. ²³ And they brought them out of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and the elders of Israel, and they laid them before the Lord. ²⁴ And Joshua took Achan the son of Zerah, and brought him to the valley of Achor, and his sons, his daughters, his calves, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all his property, and all the people with him; and he brought them to the valley of Achor. ²⁵ And Joshua said to Achan, Why have you destroyed us? The Lord destroy you this day! And all Israel stoned him with stones. ²⁶ And they set up over him a great heap of stones; and the Lord ceased from His fierce anger. Therefore he called the place the Valley of Achor to this day.

² And Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, Give me your vineyard, and I will have it for a garden of herbs, for it is near my house; and I will give you another vineyard better than that one; or if it please you, I will give you money, the price of this your vineyard, and I will have it for a garden of herbs. ³ And Naboth said to Ahab, My God forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers. ⁴ And the spirit of Ahab was troubled, and he lay down upon his bed, and covered his face, and ate no bread.

¹⁹ And you shall speak to him, saying, Thus says the Lord: Forasmuch as you have slain and taken possession, therefore thus says the Lord, In every place where the swine and the dogs have licked the blood of Naboth, there shall the dogs lick your blood; and the harlots shall wash themselves in your blood. ²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, Have you found me, O my enemy? And he said, I have found you; because you have wickedly sold yourself to work evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger; ²¹ behold, I bring evil upon you; and I will kindle a fire after you, and I will utterly destroy every male of Ahab, and him that is shut up and him that is left in Israel. ²² And I will make your house as the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and as the house of Baasha son of Ahijah, because of the provocations in which you have provoked Me, and caused Israel to sin. ²³ And the Lord spoke of Jezebel, saying, The dogs shall devour her within the walls of Jezreel. ²⁴ Him that is dead of Ahab in the city shall the dogs eat, and him that dies in the field of Ahab shall the birds of the sky eat.

²⁰ And Gehazi the servant of Elisha said, Behold, my Lord has spared this Syrian Naaman, so as not to take of his hand what he has brought; as the Lord lives, I will surely run after him, and take something from him. ²¹ So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And Naaman saw him running after him, and turned back from his chariot to meet him. ²² And Gehazi said, All is well: my master has sent me, saying, Behold, now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from Mount Ephraim; please give them a talent of silver, and two changes of clothes. ²³ And Naaman said, Take two talents of silver. And he took two talents of silver in two bags, and two changes of clothing, and put them upon two of his servants, and they bore them before him. ²⁴ And he came to a secret place, and took them from their hands, and laid them up in the house, and dismissed the men. ²⁵ And he went in himself and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, ²⁶ From where have you come, Gehazi? And Gehazi said, Your servant has not been anywhere. And Elisha said to him, Did not my heart go with you, when the man returned from his chariot to meet you? And now you have received silver, and now you have received clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants, and maidservants. ²⁷ The leprosy also of Naaman shall cleave to you, and to your seed forever. And he went out from his presence leprous, like snow.

¹⁹ For he has broken down the houses of many mighty men, and he has plundered a house, though he built it not. ²⁰ There is no security to his possessions; he shall not be saved by his desire. ²¹ There is nothing remaining of his provisions, therefore his goods shall not flourish. ²² But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be straitened; and all distress shall come upon him. ²³ If by any means he would fill his belly, let God send upon him the fury of wrath; let Him bring a torrent of pains upon him. ²⁴ And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword; let the bronze bow wound him. ²⁵ And let the arrow pierce through his body; and let the stars be against his dwelling-place: let terrors come upon him. ²⁶ And let all darkness wait for him: an unfanned fire shall consume him, and let a stranger plague his house. ²⁷ And let the heavens reveal his iniquities, and the earth rise up against him. ²⁸ Let destruction bring his house to an end; let a day of wrath come upon him.

³ Because the sinner praises himself for the desires of his heart; and the unjust one blesses himself. ⁴ The sinner has provoked the Lord: according to the abundance of his pride he will not seek after Him; God is not before him. ⁵ His ways are profane at all times; Your judgments are removed from before him: he will gain the mastery over all his enemies. ⁶ For he has said in his heart, I shall not be moved, continuing without adversity from generation to generation.

¹¹ And their tombs are their houses forever, even their tabernacles to all generations; they have called their lands after their own names.

⁷ Behold, the man who made not God his help; but trusted in the abundance of his wealth, and strengthened himself in his vanity.

¹¹ The wealth of a rich man is a strong city, and its glory casts a broad shadow. ¹² Before ruin a man's heart is exalted, and before honor it is humble.

¹⁵ Because you have said, We have made a covenant with Hades, and agreements with death; if the rushing storm should pass, it shall not come upon us; we have made falsehood our hope, and by falsehood shall we be protected.

⁷ and said, I shall be a princess forever; you did not perceive these things in your heart, nor did you remember the latter end. ⁸ But now hear these words, you luxurious one, that sits at ease, that is secure, that says in her heart, I am, and there is not another; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know bereavement. ⁹ But now these two things shall come upon you suddenly in one day, the loss of children and widowhood shall come suddenly upon you, for your sorcery, for the strength of your enchantments,

¹³ Woe to him that builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper chambers by injustice, who uses his neighbor's service without wages, and gives him nothing for his work. ¹⁴ You have built for yourself a well-proportioned house, with airy chambers, fitted with windows, and paneled with cedar, and painted with vermilion. ¹⁵ Shall you reign because you are provoked with your father Ahaz? They shall not eat, and they shall not drink: it is better for you to execute justice and righteousness. ¹⁶ They understood not, they judged not the cause of the afflicted, nor the cause of the poor — is not this your not knowing Me? Says the Lord. ¹⁷ Behold, your eyes are not good, nor your heart, but they go after your covetousness, and after the innocent blood to shed it, and after acts of injustice and slaughter, to commit them. ¹⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, even concerning this man: they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah brother! Neither shall they weep for him, saying, Alas Lord. ¹⁹ He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey; he shall be dragged roughly along and cast outside the gate of Jerusalem.

¹⁶ Your insolence has risen up against you, the fierceness of your heart has burst the holes of the rocks, it has seized upon the strength of a lofty hill; for as an eagle he set his nest on high; from there will I bring you down.

⁴ If you should mount up as the eagle, and if you should make your nest among the stars, from there will I bring you down, says the Lord.

¹ And I turned, and lifted up my eyes, and looked and behold, a flying sickle. ² And he said to me, What do you see? And I said, I see a flying sickle, its length is twenty cubits, and its width is ten cubits. ³ And he said to me, This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole earth; for every thief shall be punished with death on this side, and every false swearer shall be punished on that side. ⁴ And I will bring it forth, says the Lord Almighty, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that swears falsely by My name, and it shall rest in the midst of his house, and shall consume it, and the timber of it, and the stones of it.

¹⁷ for he was numbered with us and obtained a portion in this ministry." ¹⁸ (Now this man purchased a field by means of the wages of his unrighteousness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. ¹⁹ And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) ²⁰ For it is written in the book of Psalms: 'Let his homestead become desolate, and let no one dwell in it'; and, 'May another take his office of overseer. ' ²¹ "Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us in every time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, ²² beginning from the baptism of John until the day in which He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection." ²³ And they nominated two: Joseph who is called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. ²⁴ And they prayed and said, "You, O Lord, knower of all hearts, show whom You have chosen of these two" ²⁵ "to receive the portion in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place."

¹¹ Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, and in the error of Balaam they have rushed for profit, and have perished in the rebellion of Korah.
