³ At the same time Tattenai the governor on this side the river, and Shethar-Boznai, and their fellow servants came to them, and spoke thus to them: Who has ordained a decree for you to build this house, and to provide this preparation?

³ Who is there among you of all His people? For his God shall be with him, and he shall go up to Jerusalem that is in Judea, and let him build the house of the God of Israel: He is the God that is in Jerusalem.

¹² Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up to us from you, have come to Jerusalem, the rebellious and wicked city which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it.

⁶ This is the copy of a letter which Tattenai, the governor of the part on this side the river, and Shethar-Boznai, and their fellow servants the Apharsachaeans, who were on this side of the river, sent to King Darius.

⁹ Then we asked those elders, and thus we said to them, Who gave you the order to build this house, and to provide this preparation?

⁶ Now, you rulers beyond the river, Shethar-Boznai, and their fellow servants the Apharsachaeans, who are on the other side of the river, give these things, keeping far from that place.

¹³ Then Tattenai the governor on this side beyond the river, Shethar-Boznai, and his fellow servants, according to that which King Darius sent, so they did diligently.

²¹ and from me, whatever seems good to you to give. I, King Artaxerxes have made a decree for all the treasuries that are in the country beyond the river, that whatever Ezra the priest and scribe of the God of heaven may require of you, let it be done diligently,

⁷ And I said to the king, If it pleases the king, let him give me letters to the governors beyond the river, so as to permit me to pass, till I come to Judah; ⁸ and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the garden which belongs to the king, that he may give me timber to cover the gates, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I shall enter. And the king gave to me, according as the good hand of God was upon me. ⁹ And I came to the governors beyond the river, and I gave them the king's letters. (Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen).

²³ Now as He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?"

⁷ And they brought them forward and began to inquire, "By what power or by what name have you done this?"
