¹⁷ And it came to pass after the death of Jehoiada, that the princes of Judah went in, and bowed down to the king. Then the king hearkened to them. ¹⁸ And they forsook the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served wooden images and idols. And there was wrath upon Judah and Jerusalem in that day. ¹⁹ Yet He sent prophets to them, to turn them to the Lord; but they hearkened not; and He testified to them, but they obeyed not. ²⁰ And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood up above the people and said, Thus says the Lord: Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord? So shall you not prosper; for you have forsaken the Lord, and He will forsake you. ²¹ And they conspired against him, and stoned him by command of King Joash in the court of the Lord's house. ²² So Joash remembered not the kindness which his father Jehoiada had exercised towards him, but killed his son. And as he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and judge.

⁴ And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that Amaziah his father did. ⁵ And he sought the Lord in the days of Zechariah, who understood the fear of the Lord; and in his days he sought the Lord, and the Lord prospered him.

³⁶ Yet they loved Him only with their mouth, and lied to Him with their tongue. ³⁷ For their heart was not right with Him, neither were they steadfast in His covenant.

¹² Then they believed His words, and celebrated His praise. ¹³ They made haste, they forgot His works; they waited not for His counsel.

¹³ And the Lord has said, This people draw near to Me with their mouth, and they honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me; and in vain do they worship Me, teaching the commandments and doctrines of men.

¹⁶ And these are similarly the seeds being sown on stony ground which, whenever they hear the word, immediately they receive it with joy; ¹⁷ and they have no root in themselves, but are shortlived. Afterward, when trials or persecution arise because of the word, immediately they fall away.
