⁴ And he himself went a day's journey in the wilderness, and came and sat under a juniper tree; and asked concerning his life that he might die, and said, Let it be enough now, O Lord, take my life from me, I pray, for I am no better than my fathers.

¹⁵ And the water failed out of the skin, and she cast the child under a fir tree. ¹⁶ And she departed, and sat down opposite him at a distance, as it were about a bowshot, for she said, Surely I cannot see the death of my child: and she sat opposite him, and the child cried aloud and wept.

¹⁵ And if You do thus to me, slay me utterly, if I have found favor with You, that I may not see my affliction.

¹⁴ and went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak. And he said to him, Are you the man of God that came out of Judah? And he said to him, I am.

³ And Elijah feared, and rose, and departed for his life. And he came to Beersheba, to the land of Judah, and he left his servant there.

¹¹ And it came to pass as they were going, they went on talking; and behold, a chariot of fire appeared, with horses of fire, and it separated the two of them; and Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind into heaven.

²⁰ For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, and life to those souls which are in grief? ²¹ Who desire death, and obtain it not, digging for it as for treasures; ²² and would be very joyful if they should gain it?

¹⁴ Cursed be the day in which I was born! Let the day not be blessed in which my mother bore me! ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought the glad tidings to my father, saying, A male child has been born to you. ¹⁶ Let that man rejoice as the cities which the Lord overthrew in wrath, and repented not: let him hear crying in the morning, and loud lamentation at noon; ¹⁷ because he slew me not in the womb, and my mother became not my tomb, and her womb always enlarged with me. ¹⁸ Why is it that I came forth from the womb to see troubles and distresses, and my days are spent in shame?

² O house of Israel, pass by all of you, and see; and pass by from there to Hamath; and from there descend to Gath of the Philistines, the chief of all these kingdoms, see if their coasts are greater than your coasts.

³ And now, Lord God, take my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass at the rising of the sun, that God commanded a burning east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, and he fainted, and despaired of his life, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ Prepare a portion, tune the chord, prepare a portion for Ammon: she that dwells among the rivers, water is round about her, whose dominion is the sea, and whose walls are water.

²⁶ Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap, nor do they gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they?

²¹ For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. ²² But if I am to live on in the flesh, this to me will mean fruit from my labor; and what I shall choose I do not know. ²³ For I am hard pressed by the two, having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better. ²⁴ But to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake.
