⁵ Asaph was the chief, and next to him Zechariah, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, and Obed-Edom; and Jeiel sounded with musical instruments, lutes and harps, and Asaph with cymbals.

³⁹ And his brother Asaph, who stood at his right hand; Asaph the son of Berachiah, the son of Shimea,

¹⁶ And David said to the chiefs of the Levites, Set your brethren the singers with musical instruments, lutes, harps, and cymbals, to sound aloud with a voice of joy. ¹⁷ So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; Asaph the son of Berechiah was one of his brethren; and Ethan the son of Kushaiah was of the sons of Merari their brethren; ¹⁸ and with them their brethren of the second rank were Zechariah, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Elipheleh, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah, the porters. ¹⁹ And the singers — Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were to make a sound with bronze cymbals. ²⁰ Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with lutes, according to Alamoth. ²¹ Mattithiah, Elipheleh, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps of Sheminith, to make a loud noise. ²² And Chenaniah chief of the Levites was master of the bands, because he was skillful. ²³ And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark. ²⁴ Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, were sounding with trumpets before the ark of God. And Obed-Edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark of God.

¹ And King David and the captains of the army appointed to their services the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, lutes, and cymbals; and their number was according to their polls serving in their ministrations. ² The sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah; the sons of Asaph were next to the king. ³ To Jeduthun were reckoned the sons of Jeduthun, Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah, six after their father Jeduthun, sounding loudly on the harp thanksgiving and praise to the Lord. ⁴ To Heman were reckoned the sons of Heman, Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth. ⁵ All these were the sons of Heman the king's chief player in the praises of God, to lift up the horn. And God gave to Heman fourteen sons, and three daughters. ⁶ All these sang hymns with their father in the house of God, with cymbals, lutes, and harps, for the service of the house of God, near the king, and Asaph, and Jeduthun, and Heman.

²⁵ And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, and lutes, and harps, according to the commandment of King David, and of Gad the king's seer, and Nathan the prophet; for by the commandment of the Lord the order was in the hand of the prophets.
