¹¹ When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; and when a wise man is instructed, he acquires knowledge.

³⁴ At their cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled, saying, “The earth may swallow us too!”

¹¹ Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you.

²¹ Then all the men of his city will stone him to death. So you must purge the evil from among you, and all Israel will hear and be afraid.

⁷ But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded. ⁸ They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads. ⁹ Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done.

⁵ let the wise listen and gain instruction, and the discerning acquire wise counsel

⁹ Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man, and he will increase his learning.

¹⁴ A discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.

¹ He who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he rebels against all sound judgment.

¹⁵ The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks it out.

²⁵ Strike a mocker, and the simple will beware; rebuke the discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.

⁵ On hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great fear came over all who heard what had happened.

¹¹ And great fear came over the whole church and all who heard about these events. ¹² The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people, and with one accord the believers gathered together in Solomon’s Colonnade. ¹³ Although the people regarded them highly, no one else dared to join them. ¹⁴ Yet more and more believers were brought to the Lord—large numbers of both men and women.

⁶ These things took place as examples to keep us from craving evil things as they did. ⁷ Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got up to indulge in revelry.” ⁸ We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. ⁹ We should not test Christ, as some of them did, and were killed by snakes. ¹⁰ And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel. ¹¹ Now these things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.

¹ We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. ² For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every transgression and disobedience received its just punishment, ³ how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,

²⁸ Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. ²⁹ How much more severely do you think one deserves to be punished who has trampled on the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

¹³ And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand were killed in the quake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
