¹ Then Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ² If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word; he must do everything he has promised. ³ And if a woman in her father’s house during her youth makes a vow to the LORD or obligates herself by a pledge, ⁴ and her father hears about her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. ⁵ But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will absolve her because her father has prohibited her. ⁶ If a woman marries while under a vow or rash promise by which she has bound herself, ⁷ and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her on that day, then the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. ⁸ But if her husband prohibits her when he hears of it, he nullifies the vow that binds her or the rash promise she has made, and the LORD will absolve her. ⁹ Every vow a widow or divorced woman pledges to fulfill is binding on her. ¹⁰ If a woman in her husband’s house has made a vow or put herself under an obligation with an oath, ¹¹ and her husband hears of it but says nothing to her and does not prohibit her, then all the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. ¹² But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or pledges, shall stand. Her husband has nullified them, and the LORD will absolve her. ¹³ Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow or any sworn pledge to deny herself. ¹⁴ But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he confirms all the vows and pledges that bind her. He has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her on the day he heard about them. ¹⁵ But if he nullifies them after he hears of them, then he will bear her iniquity.” ¹⁶ These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the relationship between a man and his wife, and between a father and a young daughter still in his home.

²⁵ So Moses chose capable men from all Israel and made them heads over the people as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.

⁴ And one man from each tribe, the head of each family, must be there with you. ⁵ These are the names of the men who are to assist you: From the tribe of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; ⁶ from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; ⁷ from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; ⁸ from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; ⁹ from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon; ¹⁰ from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur; ¹¹ from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; ¹² from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; ¹³ from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; ¹⁴ from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; ¹⁵ and from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.” ¹⁶ These men were appointed from the congregation; they were the leaders of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the clans of Israel.

² And the leaders of Israel, the heads of their families, presented an offering. These men were the tribal leaders who had supervised the registration.

¹⁷ “These are the names of the men who are to assign the land as an inheritance for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. ¹⁸ Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land. ¹⁹ These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh from the tribe of Judah; ²⁰ Shemuel son of Ammihud from the tribe of Simeon; ²¹ Elidad son of Chislon from the tribe of Benjamin; ²² Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan; ²³ Hanniel son of Ephod, a leader from the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph; ²⁴ Kemuel son of Shiphtan, a leader from the tribe of Ephraim; ²⁵ Eli-zaphan son of Parnach, a leader from the tribe of Zebulun; ²⁶ Paltiel son of Azzan, a leader from the tribe of Issachar; ²⁷ Ahihud son of Shelomi, a leader from the tribe of Asher; ²⁸ and Pedahel son of Ammihud, a leader from the tribe of Naphtali.”

¹³ Choose for yourselves wise, understanding, and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will appoint them as your leaders.” ¹⁴ And you answered me and said, “What you propose to do is good.” ¹⁵ So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them as leaders over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens, and as officers for your tribes. ¹⁶ At that time I charged your judges: “Hear the disputes between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother or a foreign resident. ¹⁷ Show no partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be intimidated by anyone, for judgment belongs to God. And bring to me any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.”

²⁰ Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey, and if He will provide me with food to eat and clothes to wear, ²¹ so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God. ²² And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.”

⁷ You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.

⁴ Or if someone swears thoughtlessly with his lips to do anything good or evil—in whatever matter a man may rashly pronounce an oath—even if he is unaware of it, when he realizes it, he is guilty in the matter.

² “Speak to the Israelites and say to them, ‘When someone makes a special vow to the LORD involving the value of persons, ³ if the valuation concerns a male from twenty to sixty years of age, then your valuation shall be fifty shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel. ⁴ Or if it is a female, then your valuation shall be thirty shekels. ⁵ And if the person is from five to twenty years of age, then your valuation for the male shall be twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels. ⁶ Now if the person is from one month to five years of age, then your valuation for the male shall be five shekels of silver, and for the female three shekels of silver. ⁷ And if the person is sixty years of age or older, then your valuation shall be fifteen shekels for the male and ten shekels for the female. ⁸ But if the one making the vow is too poor to pay the valuation, he is to present the person before the priest, who shall set the value according to what the one making the vow can afford. ⁹ If he vows an animal that may be brought as an offering to the LORD, any such animal given to the LORD shall be holy. ¹⁰ He must not replace it or exchange it, either good for bad or bad for good. But if he does substitute one animal for another, both that animal and its substitute will be holy. ¹¹ But if the vow involves any of the unclean animals that may not be brought as an offering to the LORD, the animal must be presented before the priest. ¹² The priest shall set its value, whether high or low; as the priest values it, the price will be set. ¹³ If, however, the owner decides to redeem the animal, he must add a fifth to its value. ¹⁴ Now if a man consecrates his house as holy to the LORD, then the priest shall value it either as good or bad. The price will stand just as the priest values it. ¹⁵ But if he who consecrated his house redeems it, he must add a fifth to the assessed value, and it will belong to him. ¹⁶ If a man consecrates to the LORD a parcel of his land, then your valuation shall be proportional to the seed required for it—fifty shekels of silver for every homer of barley seed. ¹⁷ If he consecrates his field during the Year of Jubilee, the price will stand according to your valuation. ¹⁸ But if he consecrates his field after the Jubilee, the priest is to calculate the price in proportion to the years left until the next Year of Jubilee, so that your valuation will be reduced. ¹⁹ And if the one who consecrated the field decides to redeem it, he must add a fifth to the assessed value, and it shall belong to him. ²⁰ If, however, he does not redeem the field, or if he has sold it to another man, it may no longer be redeemed. ²¹ When the field is released in the Jubilee, it will become holy, like a field devoted to the LORD; it becomes the property of the priests. ²² Now if a man consecrates to the LORD a field he has purchased, which is not a part of his own property, ²³ then the priest shall calculate for him the value up to the Year of Jubilee, and the man shall pay the assessed value on that day as a sacred offering to the LORD. ²⁴ In the Year of Jubilee the field shall return to the one from whom it was bought—the original owner of the land. ²⁵ Every valuation will be according to the sanctuary shekel, twenty gerahs to the shekel. ²⁶ But no one may consecrate a firstborn of the livestock, because a firstborn belongs to the LORD. Whether it is an ox or a sheep, it is the LORD’s. ²⁷ But if it is among the unclean animals, then he may redeem it according to your valuation and add a fifth of its value. If it is not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to your valuation. ²⁸ Nothing that a man sets apart to the LORD from all he owns—whether a man, an animal, or his inherited land—can be sold or redeemed; everything so devoted is most holy to the LORD. ²⁹ No person set apart for destruction may be ransomed; he must surely be put to death. ³⁰ Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed of the land or the fruit of the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD. ³¹ If a man wishes to redeem part of his tithe, he must add a fifth to its value. ³² Every tenth animal from the herd or flock that passes under the shepherd’s rod will be holy to the LORD. ³³ He must not inspect whether it is good or bad, and he shall not make any substitution. But if he does make a substitution, both the animal and its substitute shall become holy; they cannot be redeemed.’” ³⁴ These are the commandments that the LORD gave to Moses for the Israelites on Mount Sinai.

² So Israel made a vow to the LORD: “If You will deliver this people into our hands, we will devote their cities to destruction.”

¹⁰ If a woman in her husband’s house has made a vow or put herself under an obligation with an oath,

²¹ If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to keep it, because He will surely require it of you, and you will be guilty of sin. ²² But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty of sin. ²³ Be careful to follow through on what comes from your lips, because you have freely vowed to the LORD your God with your own mouth.

¹¹ So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at Mizpah.

³⁰ Jephthah made this vow to the LORD: “If indeed You will deliver the Ammonites into my hand, ³¹ then whatever comes out the door of my house to greet me on my triumphant return from the Ammonites will belong to the LORD, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”

³⁵ As soon as Jephthah saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees! You have brought great misery upon me, for I have given my word to the LORD and cannot take it back.” ³⁶ “My father,” she replied, “you have given your word to the LORD. Do to me as you have said, for the LORD has avenged you of your enemies, the Ammonites.”

³⁹ After two months, she returned to her father, and he did to her as he had vowed. And she had never had relations with a man. So it has become a custom in Israel

²⁷ You will pray to Him, and He will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.

³ who has no slander on his tongue, who does no harm to his neighbor, who casts no scorn on his friend,

²⁵ My praise for You resounds in the great assembly; I will fulfill my vows before those who fear You.

¹⁴ Sacrifice a thank offering to God, and fulfill your vows to the Most High.

²⁰ My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.

¹² Your vows are upon me, O God; I will render thank offerings to You.

²⁵ It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly, only later to reconsider his vows.

⁴ When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it, because He takes no pleasure in fools. Fulfill your vow. ⁵ It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it.

¹⁵ Look to the mountains—the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Celebrate your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows. For the wicked will never again march through you; they will be utterly cut off.

³³ Again, you have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’ ³⁴ But I tell you not to swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;

⁷ so much that he promised with an oath to give to her whatever she asked. ⁸ Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” ⁹ The king was grieved, but because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered that her wish be granted

¹⁶ Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’

¹⁸ And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’

¹² When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.

¹⁴ They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.

²¹ Do not let them persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to ambush him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him; they are ready now, awaiting your consent.”

²³ I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.

⁹ As it is written: “He has scattered abroad His gifts to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.” ¹⁰ Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your store of seed and will increase the harvest of your righteousness. ¹¹ You will be enriched in every way to be generous on every occasion, so that through us your giving will produce thanksgiving to God.

⁶ For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

⁴ For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ ⁵ But you say that if anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’ ⁶ he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ ¹¹ But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God), ¹² he is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother. ¹³ Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.”

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

¹⁶ To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

⁴ The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.

³⁴ Women are to be silent in the churches. They are not permitted to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

²² Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. ²³ For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. ²⁴ Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

⁷ A priest must not marry a woman defiled by prostitution or divorced by her husband, for the priest is holy to his God.

³⁷ and then was a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.

² For instance, a married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.

²⁵ The priest is to make atonement for the whole congregation of Israel, so that they may be forgiven; for the sin was unintentional and they have brought to the LORD an offering made by fire and a sin offering, presented before the LORD for their unintentional sin.

²⁸ And the priest shall make atonement before the LORD on behalf of the person who erred by sinning unintentionally; and when atonement has been made for him, he will be forgiven.

⁵ But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will absolve her because her father has prohibited her.

⁸ But if her husband prohibits her when he hears of it, he nullifies the vow that binds her or the rash promise she has made, and the LORD will absolve her.

³ But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

²⁹ This is to be a permanent statute for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month, you shall humble yourselves and not do any work—whether the native or the foreigner who resides among you—

²⁷ “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. You shall hold a sacred assembly and humble yourselves, and present an offering made by fire to the LORD.

³² It will be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall humble yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to keep your Sabbath.”

⁷ On the tenth day of this seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly, and you shall humble yourselves; you must not do any work.

²¹ And there by the Ahava Canal I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask Him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.

¹³ Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting, but my prayers returned unanswered.

⁵ Is this the fast I have chosen: a day for a man to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the LORD?

⁵ Do not deprive each other, except by mutual consent and for a time, so you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again, so that Satan will not tempt you through your lack of self-control.

⁹ Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

¹ Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your husbands, so that even if they refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the behavior of their wives ² when they see your pure and reverent demeanor. ³ Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, ⁴ but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight. ⁵ For this is how the holy women of the past adorned themselves. They put their hope in God and were submissive to their husbands, ⁶ just as Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord. And you are her children if you do what is right and refuse to give way to fear.

¹ “If someone sins by failing to testify when he hears a public charge about something he has witnessed, whether he has seen it or learned of it, he shall bear the iniquity.

¹² But if her husband nullifies them on the day he hears of them, then nothing that came from her lips, whether her vows or pledges, shall stand. Her husband has nullified them, and the LORD will absolve her.

²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

⁴⁶ This is the law regarding animals, birds, all living creatures that move in the water, and all creatures that crawl along the ground. ⁴⁷ You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between animals that may be eaten and those that may not.’”

⁵⁹ This is the law concerning a mildew contamination in wool or linen fabric, weave, or knit, or any leather article, for pronouncing it clean or unclean.”

⁵⁴ This is the law for any infectious skin disease, for a scaly outbreak, ⁵⁵ for mildew in clothing or in a house, ⁵⁶ and for a swelling, rash, or spot, ⁵⁷ to determine when something is clean or unclean. This is the law regarding skin diseases and mildew.”

³² This is the law of him who has a discharge, of the man who has an emission of semen whereby he is unclean, ³³ of a woman in her menstrual period, of any male or female who has a discharge, and of a man who lies with an unclean woman.’”

²⁹ This is the law of jealousy when a wife goes astray and defiles herself while under her husband’s authority, ³⁰ or when a feeling of jealousy comes over a husband and he suspects his wife. He is to have the woman stand before the LORD, and the priest is to apply to her this entire law.
