¹⁸ If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and does not listen to them when disciplined,

¹² Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.

¹⁵ Whoever strikes his father or mother must surely be put to death.

¹⁷ Anyone who curses his father or mother must surely be put to death.

³ Each of you must respect his mother and father, and you must keep My Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.

⁹ If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by prostituting herself, she profanes her father; she must be burned in the fire.

⁵ So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.

¹⁶ ‘Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother.’ And let all the people say, ‘Amen!’

¹⁴ I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.

⁸ Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.

²⁴ He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently.

⁵ A fool rejects his father’s discipline, but whoever heeds correction is prudent.

¹⁸ Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be party to his death.

² Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I have raised children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against Me.

⁵ Why do you want more beatings? Why do you keep rebelling? Your head has a massive wound, and your whole heart is afflicted.

³ O LORD, do not Your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They have made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning: ‘You disciplined me severely, like an untrained calf. Restore me, that I may return, for You are the LORD my God.

⁷ Father and mother are treated with contempt. Within your walls the foreign resident is exploited, the fatherless and the widow are oppressed.

¹³ Because of the indecency of your uncleanness I tried to cleanse you, but you would not be purified from your filthiness. You will not be pure again until My wrath against you has subsided.

¹¹ “Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD. ¹² “Therefore, that is what I will do to you, O Israel, and since I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel!

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ² “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment with a promise), ³ “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.”

⁹ Furthermore, we have all had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we respected them. Should we not much more submit to the Father of our spirits and live? ¹⁰ Our fathers disciplined us for a short time as they thought best, but God disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness. ¹¹ No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace to those who have been trained by it.
