² ἵνα (that) αὐτὴν (her) προσδέξησθε (you might receive) ἐν (in the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἀξίως (worthily) τῶν (-) ἁγίων (of the saints), καὶ (and) παραστῆτε (you might assist) αὐτῇ (her) ἐν (in) ᾧ (whatever) ἂν (-) ὑμῶν (of you) χρῄζῃ (she may need) πράγματι (matter). καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) αὐτὴ (she) προστάτις (a patroness) πολλῶν (of many) ἐγενήθη (has been), καὶ (and) ἐμοῦ (of me) αὐτοῦ (myself).

³ Πορνεία (Sexual immorality) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) ἀκαθαρσία (impurity) πᾶσα (all), ἢ (or) πλεονεξία (covetousness), μηδὲ (not even) ὀνομαζέσθω (let be named) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (as also) πρέπει (is proper) ἁγίοις (to saints),

⁹ Ὡσαύτως (Likewise) ‹καὶ› (also) γυναῖκας (women), ἐν (in) καταστολῇ (apparel) κοσμίῳ (respectable), μετὰ (with) αἰδοῦς (modesty) καὶ (and) σωφροσύνης (self-control), κοσμεῖν (should adorn) ἑαυτάς (themselves), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) πλέγμασιν (braided hair), καὶ (or) χρυσίῳ (gold), ἢ (or) μαργαρίταις (pearls), ἢ (or) ἱματισμῷ (clothing) πολυτελεῖ (costly), ¹⁰ ἀλλ’ (but) ὃ (with what) πρέπει (is becoming) γυναιξὶν (to women) ἐπαγγελλομέναις (professing) θεοσέβειαν (the fear of God), δι’ (through) ἔργων (works) ἀγαθῶν (good).

⁸ Διακόνους (Deacons) ὡσαύτως (likewise) σεμνούς (must be dignified), μὴ (not) διλόγους (double-tongued), μὴ (not) οἴνῳ (to wine) πολλῷ (much) προσέχοντας (being given), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδεῖς (greedy of dishonest gain),

¹¹ Γυναῖκας (Women) ὡσαύτως (likewise) σεμνάς (must be dignified), μὴ (not) διαβόλους (slanderers), νηφαλίους (clear-minded), πιστὰς (faithful) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things).

⁵ Ἡ (She who is) δὲ (now) ὄντως (indeed) χήρα (a widow), καὶ (and) μεμονωμένη (being left alone), ἤλπικεν (has hope) ἐπὶ (in) Θεὸν (God), καὶ (and) προσμένει (continues) ταῖς (-) δεήσεσιν (in supplications) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) προσευχαῖς (prayers) νυκτὸς (night) καὶ (and) ἡμέρας (day). ⁶ ἡ (She) δὲ (however) σπαταλῶσα (living in self-indulgence), ζῶσα (while living) τέθνηκεν (is dead). ⁷ Καὶ (Also) ταῦτα (these things) παράγγελλε (command), ἵνα (so that) ἀνεπίλημπτοι (above reproach) ὦσιν (they should be). ⁸ εἰ (If) δέ (now) τις (anyone) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own), καὶ (and) μάλιστα (especially his) οἰκείων (household), οὐ (not) προνοεῖ (does provide for), τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ἤρνηται (he has denied), καὶ (and) ἔστιν (he is) ἀπίστου (than an unbeliever) χείρων (worse). ⁹ Χήρα (A widow) καταλεγέσθω (let be enrolled) μὴ (not) ἔλαττον (less than) ἐτῶν (years old) ἑξήκοντα (sixty), γεγονυῖα (being) ἑνὸς (of one) ἀνδρὸς (man) γυνή (the wife), ¹⁰ ἐν (in) ἔργοις (works) καλοῖς (good) μαρτυρουμένη (being borne witness to), εἰ (if) ἐτεκνοτρόφησεν (she has brought up children), εἰ (if) ἐξενοδόχησεν (she entertained strangers), εἰ (if) ἁγίων (saints’) πόδας (feet) ἔνιψεν (she has washed), εἰ (if to those) θλιβομένοις (being oppressed) ἐπήρκεσεν (she has imparted relief), εἰ (if) παντὶ (every) ἔργῳ (work) ἀγαθῷ (good) ἐπηκολούθησεν (she has followed after).

²³ Μηκέτι (No longer) ὑδροπότει (drink only water), ἀλλὰ (but) οἴνῳ (wine) ὀλίγῳ (a little) χρῶ (use), διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) στόμαχον (stomach) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) πυκνάς (frequent) σου (of you) ἀσθενείας (ailments).

⁷ Δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνέγκλητον (blameless) εἶναι (to be), ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκονόμον (steward); μὴ (not) αὐθάδη (self-willed), μὴ (not) ὀργίλον (quick tempered), μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδῆ (greedy of base gain),

⁴ ἵνα (so that) σωφρονίζωσιν (they may train) τὰς (the) νέας (young women) φιλάνδρους (lovers of their husbands) εἶναι (to be), φιλοτέκνους (loving their children),

¹² καὶ (Even) γὰρ (for) ὀφείλοντες (you ought) εἶναι (to be) διδάσκαλοι (teachers) διὰ (by) τὸν (the) χρόνον (time), πάλιν (again) χρείαν (need of) ἔχετε (you have) τοῦ (one) διδάσκειν (to teach) ὑμᾶς (you) τινα (what is) τὰ (the) στοιχεῖα (principles) τῆς (of the) ἀρχῆς (beginning) τῶν (of the) λογίων (oracles) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); καὶ (and) γεγόνατε (you have become) χρείαν (need) ἔχοντες (those having) γάλακτος (of milk), [καὶ] (and) οὐ (not) στερεᾶς (of solid) τροφῆς (food).

³ ὧν (whose) ἔστω (let it be) οὐχ (not) ὁ (the) ἔξωθεν (external) ἐμπλοκῆς (of braiding) τριχῶν (of hair) καὶ (and) περιθέσεως (putting around) χρυσίων (of gold), ἢ (or) ἐνδύσεως (putting on) ἱματίων (of garments) κόσμος (adorning), ⁴ ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) κρυπτὸς (hidden) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ἄνθρωπος (man), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀφθάρτῳ (imperishable) τοῦ (of the) πραέως (gentle) καὶ (and) ἡσυχίου (quiet) πνεύματος (spirit), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πολυτελές (of great worth). ⁵ Οὕτως (In this way) γάρ (for) ποτε (formerly) καὶ (also) αἱ (the) ἅγιαι (holy) γυναῖκες (women) αἱ (-) ἐλπίζουσαι (hoping) εἰς (in) Θεὸν (God) ἐκόσμουν (used to adorn) ἑαυτάς (themselves), ὑποτασσόμεναι (being subject) τοῖς (to the) ἰδίοις (own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands),

²⁰ Ἀλλὰ (But) ἔχω (I have) κατὰ (against) σοῦ (you) ὅτι (that) ἀφεῖς (you tolerate) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (woman) Ἰεζάβελ (Jezebel), ἡ (the one) λέγουσα (calling) ἑαυτὴν (herself) προφῆτιν (a prophetess) καὶ (and) διδάσκει (teaching) καὶ (and) πλανᾷ (misleading) τοὺς (-) ἐμοὺς (My) δούλους (servants) πορνεῦσαι (to commit sexual immorality), καὶ (and) φαγεῖν (to eat) εἰδωλόθυτα (things sacrificed to idols).
