¹⁴ Οἴδαμεν (We know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law) πνευματικός (spiritual) ἐστιν (is); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) σάρκινός (fleshly) εἰμι (am), πεπραμένος (having been sold) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin).

²² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀργιζόμενος (being angry with) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῇ (to the) κρίσει (judgment); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Ῥακά (Raca),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῷ (to the) συνεδρίῳ (Sanhedrin); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say), ‘Μωρέ (Fool),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire).

²⁸ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) βλέπων (looking upon) γυναῖκα (a woman) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) ἐπιθυμῆσαι (to lust after) αὐτὴν (her) ἤδη (already) ἐμοίχευσεν (has committed adultery with) αὐτὴν (her) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) εἶπεν (He said) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Ὕπαγε (Get) ὀπίσω (behind) μου (Me), Σατανᾶ (Satan)! σκάνδαλον (A stumbling block) εἶ (you are) ἐμοῦ (to Me). ὅτι (For) οὐ (not) φρονεῖς (your thoughts are of) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the) τῶν (things) ἀνθρώπων (of men).”

²⁵ μὴ (Nothing) ἔχοντος (having) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἐκέλευσεν (commanded) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) πραθῆναι (to be sold), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ὅσα (as many as) ἔχει (he had), καὶ (and) ἀποδοθῆναι (payment to be made).

³⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), “‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (soul) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) διανοίᾳ (mind) σου (of you).’ ³⁸ αὕτη (This) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μεγάλη (great) καὶ (and) πρώτη (first) ἐντολή (commandment). ³⁹ δευτέρα (The second) ‹δὲ› (also) ὁμοία (is like) αὐτῇ (it): ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’ ⁴⁰ ἐν (On) ταύταις (these) ταῖς (-) δυσὶν (two) ἐντολαῖς (commandments), ὅλος (all) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) κρέμαται (hangs) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (Prophets).”

⁸ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now), Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter) προσέπεσεν (fell at) τοῖς (the) γόνασιν (knees) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ἔξελθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me), ὅτι (for) ἀνὴρ (a man) ἁμαρτωλός (sinful) εἰμι (am I), Κύριε (Lord).”

⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐπορεύετο (was going) σὺν (with) αὐτοῖς (them). ἤδη (Already) δὲ (then), αὐτοῦ (He) οὐ (not) μακρὰν (far) ἀπέχοντος (being distant) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) οἰκίας (house), ἔπεμψεν (sent) φίλους (friends) ὁ (the) ἑκατοντάρχης (centurion), λέγων (saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), μὴ (not) σκύλλου (trouble Yourself), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἱκανός (worthy) εἰμι (I am) ἵνα (that) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (the) στέγην (roof) μου (of me) εἰσέλθῃς (You should come);

¹¹ ὁ (The) Φαρισαῖος (Pharisee), σταθεὶς (having stood), ταῦτα (thus) «πρὸς (toward) ἑαυτὸν» (himself) προσηύχετο (was praying), Ὁ (-) ‘Θεός (God), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ὥσπερ (like) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest) τῶν (of the) ἀνθρώπων (men) — ἅρπαγες (swindlers), ἄδικοι (unrighteous), μοιχοί (adulterers) — ἢ (or) καὶ (even) ὡς (like) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) τελώνης (tax collector). ¹² νηστεύω (I fast) δὶς (twice) τοῦ (in the) σαββάτου (week); ἀποδεκατῶ (I tithe) πάντα (all things), ὅσα (as many as) κτῶμαι (I gain).’ ¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) τελώνης (the tax collector), μακρόθεν (afar off) ἑστὼς (standing), οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (was willing) οὐδὲ (not even) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἐπᾶραι (to lift up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔτυπτεν (was striking) τὸ (the) στῆθος (breast) αὐτοῦ (of himself), λέγων (saying) Ὁ (-), ‘Θεός (God), ἱλάσθητί (be merciful) μοι (to me), τῷ (the) ἁμαρτωλῷ (sinner)!’ ¹⁴ λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), κατέβη (went down) οὗτος (this one) δεδικαιωμένος (justified) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρ’ (rather than) ἐκεῖνον (that). ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

¹⁸ Οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (nothing) οἰκεῖ (there dwells) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (me), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh) μου (of me), ἀγαθόν (good); τὸ (-) γὰρ (for) θέλειν (to will) παράκειταί (is present with) μοι (me), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) κατεργάζεσθαι (to do) τὸ (the) καλὸν (good), οὔ (not).

²² συνήδομαι (I delight) γὰρ (for) τῷ (in the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) ἔσω (inward) ἄνθρωπον (man); ²³ βλέπω (I see) δὲ (however) ἕτερον (another) νόμον (law) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me), ἀντιστρατευόμενον (warring against) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind) μου (of me), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντά (making captive) με (me) ἐν (to) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me). ²⁴ Ταλαίπωρος (O wretched) ἐγὼ (I am) ἄνθρωπος (man)! τίς (Who) με (me) ῥύσεται (will deliver) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death) τούτου (this)?

¹ Κἀγώ (And I) ἀδελφοί (brothers) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθην (was able) λαλῆσαι (to speak) ὑμῖν (to you) ὡς (as) πνευματικοῖς (to spiritual), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) σαρκίνοις (to fleshly), ὡς (as) νηπίοις (to infants) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ). ² γάλα (Milk) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπότισα (I gave to drink), οὐ (not) βρῶμα (solid food), οὔπω (not yet) γὰρ (for) ἐδύνασθε (were you able). Ἀλλ’ (In fact), οὐδὲ (not) ἔτι (still) νῦν (now) δύνασθε (are you able); ³ ἔτι (still) γὰρ (for) σαρκικοί (fleshly) ἐστε (you are). ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ἐν (are among) ὑμῖν (you) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἔρις (strife), οὐχὶ (not) σαρκικοί (fleshly) ἐστε (are you), καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man) περιπατεῖτε (are walking)?

⁸ Ἐμοὶ (To me), τῷ (the) ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ (very least) πάντων (of all) ἁγίων (saints), ἐδόθη (was given) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὕτη (this): τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach) τὸ (the) ἀνεξιχνίαστον (unsearchable) πλοῦτος (riches) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹² Ζῶν (Living is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἐνεργὴς (active), καὶ (and) τομώτερος (sharper) ὑπὲρ (than) πᾶσαν (any) μάχαιραν (sword) δίστομον (two-edged), καὶ (even) διϊκνούμενος (penetrating) ἄχρι (as far as) μερισμοῦ (the division) ψυχῆς (of soul) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἁρμῶν (of joints) τε (and) καὶ (also) μυελῶν (marrows), καὶ (and) κριτικὸς (able to judge) ἐνθυμήσεων (the thoughts) καὶ (and) ἐννοιῶν (intentions) καρδίας (of the heart).
