³⁸ ὃς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἐὰν (if) ἐπαισχυνθῇ (may be ashamed of) με (Me) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) ἐμοὺς (My) λόγους (words) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) γενεᾷ (generation) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (-) μοιχαλίδι (adulterous) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλῷ (sinful), καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐπαισχυνθήσεται (will be ashamed of) αὐτὸν (him) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (He shall come) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) αὐτοῦ (of Him), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) τῶν (-) ἁγίων (holy).”

¹⁰ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel), “Μὴ (Not) φοβεῖσθε (fear); ἰδοὺ (behold), γὰρ (for) εὐαγγελίζομαι (I bring good news) ὑμῖν (to you) χαρὰν (of joy) μεγάλην (great), ἥτις (which) ἔσται (will be) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people). ¹¹ ὅτι (For) ἐτέχθη (has been born) ὑμῖν (to you) σήμερον (today) Σωτήρ (a Savior), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) Χριστὸς (Christ) Κύριος (the Lord), ἐν (in) πόλει (the City) Δαυίδ (of David).

²⁶ ὃς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἂν (-) ἐπαισχυνθῇ (may have been ashamed of) με (Me) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) ἐμοὺς (My) λόγους (words), τοῦτον (him) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐπαισχυνθήσεται (will be ashamed of) ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (He shall come) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Himself), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), καὶ (and) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (holy) ἀγγέλων (angels).

³⁵ Εἶπον (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτούς (themselves), “Ποῦ (Where) οὗτος (He) μέλλει (is about) πορεύεσθαι (to go) ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) οὐχ (not) εὑρήσομεν (will find) αὐτόν (Him)? μὴ (Not) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) Διασπορὰν (Dispersion) τῶν (among the) Ἑλλήνων (Greeks) μέλλει (is He about) πορεύεσθαι (to go) καὶ (and) διδάσκειν (to teach) τοὺς (the) Ἕλληνας (Greeks)?

²⁶ ὑμῖν (To you) πρῶτον (first), ἀναστήσας (having raised up) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) Παῖδα (servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀπέστειλεν (sent) αὐτὸν (Him), εὐλογοῦντα (blessing) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ἀποστρέφειν (turning away) ἕκαστον (each) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πονηριῶν (wickednesses) ὑμῶν (of you).”

⁹ θλῖψις (tribulation) καὶ (and) στενοχωρία (distress) ἐπὶ (upon) πᾶσαν (every) ψυχὴν (soul) ἀνθρώπου (of man) τοῦ (-) κατεργαζομένου (working) τὸ (-) κακόν (evil), Ἰουδαίου (of Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first), καὶ (and also) Ἕλληνος (of Greek);

¹¹ Καὶ (And) σημεῖον (the sign) ἔλαβεν (he received) περιτομῆς (of circumcision), σφραγῖδα (a seal) τῆς (of the) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) τῆς (that he had) ἐν (while in) τῇ (the) ἀκροβυστίᾳ (uncircumcision), εἰς (for) τὸ (the) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (him) πατέρα (father) πάντων (of all) τῶν (those) πιστευόντων (believing), δι’ (in) ἀκροβυστίας (uncircumcision), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) λογισθῆναι (to be credited) [καὶ] (also) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὴν (the) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness),

¹⁹ ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) σημείων (of signs) καὶ (and) τεράτων (wonders), ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) [θεοῦ] (of God); ὥστε (so as) με (for me) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) κύκλῳ (around) μέχρι (unto) τοῦ (-) Ἰλλυρικοῦ (Illyricum), πεπληρωκέναι (to have fully proclaimed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

²⁹ οἶδα (I know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ἐρχόμενος (coming) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐν (in) πληρώματι (the fullness) εὐλογίας (of the blessing) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐλεύσομαι (I will come).

¹⁸ Ὁ (The) λόγος (message) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) τοῦ (of the) σταυροῦ (cross), τοῖς (to those) μὲν (indeed) ἀπολλυμένοις (perishing) μωρία (foolishness) ἐστίν (is); τοῖς (those) δὲ (however) σῳζομένοις (being saved), ἡμῖν (to us), δύναμις (power) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστιν (it is). ¹⁹ γέγραπται (It has been written) γάρ (for): “Ἀπολῶ (I will destroy) τὴν (the) σοφίαν (wisdom) τῶν (of the) σοφῶν (wise), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) σύνεσιν (intelligence) τῶν (of the) συνετῶν (intelligent) ἀθετήσω (I will frustrate).” ²⁰ Ποῦ (Where is the) σοφός (wise)? ποῦ (Where the) γραμματεύς (scribe)? ποῦ (Where the) συζητητὴς (debater) τοῦ (the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (of this)? οὐχὶ (Not) ἐμώρανεν (has made foolish) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὴν (the) σοφίαν (wisdom) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world)? ²¹ ἐπειδὴ (Since) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (knew) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) σοφίας (wisdom) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), εὐδόκησεν (was pleased) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) μωρίας (foolishness) τοῦ (of the) κηρύγματος (proclamation), σῶσαι (to save) τοὺς (those) πιστεύοντας (believing). ²² Ἐπειδὴ (Seeing that) καὶ (both) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) σημεῖα (signs) αἰτοῦσιν (ask for), καὶ (and) Ἕλληνες (Greeks) σοφίαν (wisdom) ζητοῦσιν (seek), ²³ ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) κηρύσσομεν (preach) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐσταυρωμένον (having been crucified), Ἰουδαίοις (to the Jewish) μὲν (indeed) σκάνδαλον (a stumbling block), ἔθνεσιν (to Gentiles) δὲ (now) μωρίαν (foolishness); ²⁴ αὐτοῖς (to them) δὲ (however) τοῖς (the) κλητοῖς (called), Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) τε (both) καὶ (and) Ἕλλησιν (Greeks), Χριστὸν (Christ) Θεοῦ (of God) δύναμιν (the power) καὶ (and) Θεοῦ (of God) σοφίαν (the wisdom).

² οὐ (Nothing) γὰρ (for) ἔκρινά (I decided) τι (anything) εἰδέναι (to know) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ), καὶ (and) τοῦτον (Him) ἐσταυρωμένον (having been crucified).

⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) λόγος (message) μου (of me) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμά (preaching) μου (of me) οὐκ (were not) ἐν (in) πειθοῖς (persuasive) σοφίας (of wisdom) λόγοις (words), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) ἀποδείξει (demonstration) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) καὶ (and) δυνάμεως (of power),

¹² εἰ (If) ἄλλοι (others) τῆς (of the) ὑμῶν (over you) ἐξουσίας (authority) μετέχουσιν (partake), οὐ (should not) μᾶλλον (more) ἡμεῖς (we)? ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐχρησάμεθα (we did use) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (right) ταύτῃ (this). ἀλλὰ (Instead), πάντα (all things) στέγομεν (we bear), ἵνα (so that) μή (not) τινα (any) ἐνκοπὴν (hindrance) δῶμεν (we should place) τῷ (to the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹⁸ τίς (What) οὖν (then) μού (of me) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) μισθός (reward)? ἵνα (That) εὐαγγελιζόμενος (in preaching the gospel) ἀδάπανον (free of charge), θήσω (I should offer) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) καταχρήσασθαι (to use up) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (right) μου (of me) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel).

²⁴ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) πάντες (all) προφητεύωσιν (prophesy), εἰσέλθῃ (should come in) δέ (then) τις (some) ἄπιστος (unbeliever) ἢ (or) ἰδιώτης (uninstructed), ἐλέγχεται (he is convicted) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all), ἀνακρίνεται (he is examined) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all), ²⁵ τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (secrets) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) φανερὰ (manifest) γίνεται (become). καὶ (And) οὕτως (thus) πεσὼν (having fallen) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (his face), προσκυνήσει (he will worship) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ἀπαγγέλλων (declaring) ὅτι (that) Ὄντως (certainly) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is).

² δι’ (by) οὗ (which) καὶ (also) σῴζεσθε (you are being saved), τίνι (to the) λόγῳ (word) εὐηγγελισάμην (I proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), εἰ (if) κατέχετε (you hold fast); ἐκτὸς (unless) εἰ (if) μὴ (not), εἰκῇ (in vain) ἐπιστεύσατε (you have believed).

¹² Ἐλθὼν (Having come) δὲ (now) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Τρῳάδα (Troas) εἰς (for) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), καὶ (also) θύρας (a door) μοι (to me) ἀνεῳγμένης (having been opened) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord),

¹⁴ Τῷ (To) δὲ (however) Θεῷ (God) χάρις (be thanks), τῷ (the One) πάντοτε (always) θριαμβεύοντι (leading in triumph) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ὀσμὴν (fragrance) τῆς (of the) γνώσεως (knowledge) αὐτοῦ (of Him) φανεροῦντι (making manifest) δι’ (through) ἡμῶν (us) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) τόπῳ (place). ¹⁵ ὅτι (For) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) εὐωδία (a sweet perfume) ἐσμὲν (we are) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἐν (in) τοῖς (those) σωζομένοις (being saved) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τοῖς (those) ἀπολλυμένοις (perishing); ¹⁶ οἷς (to one) μὲν (indeed) ὀσμὴ (an odor) ἐκ (from) θανάτου (death) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death), οἷς (to one) δὲ (now), ὀσμὴ (a fragrance) ἐκ (from) ζωῆς (life) εἰς (to) ζωήν (life). καὶ (And) πρὸς (for) ταῦτα (these things) τίς (who is) ἱκανός (sufficient)?

⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹³ διὰ (through) τῆς (the) δοκιμῆς (proof) τῆς (of the) διακονίας (service) ταύτης (this), δοξάζοντες (they glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) ὑποταγῇ (submission) τῆς (of the) ὁμολογίας (of confession) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) καὶ (and) ἁπλότητι (the generosity) τῆς (of the) κοινωνίας (participation) εἰς (toward) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all);

⁴ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ὅπλα (weapons) τῆς (of the) στρατείας (warfare) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐ (are not) σαρκικὰ (fleshly), ἀλλὰ (but) δυνατὰ (powerful) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (divinely) πρὸς (to) καθαίρεσιν (the demolition) ὀχυρωμάτων (of strongholds), ⁵ λογισμοὺς (arguments) καθαιροῦντες (overthrowing), καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) ὕψωμα (high thing) ἐπαιρόμενον (lifting itself up) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) γνώσεως (knowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντες (taking captive) πᾶν (every) νόημα (thought) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ὑπακοὴν (obedience) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

⁷ ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἄλλο (another); εἰ (if) μή (not) τινές (some) εἰσιν (there are) οἱ (who) ταράσσοντες (are troubling) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) θέλοντες (are desiring) μεταστρέψαι (to pervert) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

⁵ διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἐλπίδα (hope) τὴν (-) ἀποκειμένην (being laid up) ὑμῖν (for you) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens), ἣν (which) προηκούσατε (you heard of before) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τῆς (of) ἀληθείας (truth), τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), ⁶ τοῦ (the one) παρόντος (being present) εἰς (unto) ὑμᾶς (you), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) παντὶ (all) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐστὶν (it is) καρποφορούμενον (bearing fruit) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενον (increasing), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἠκούσατε (you heard) καὶ (and) ἐπέγνωτε (knew) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth),

⁵ ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐκ (not) ἐγενήθη (came) εἰς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (word) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy), καὶ (and) [ἐν] (with) πληροφορίᾳ (full assurance) πολλῇ (much), καθὼς (just as) οἴδατε (you know) οἷοι (what) ἐγενήθημεν (we were) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) δι’ (on account of) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁶ Καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you) μιμηταὶ (imitators) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐγενήθητε (became), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), δεξάμενοι (having received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἐν (in) θλίψει (tribulation) πολλῇ (much), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (the joy) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy),

¹³ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also), ἡμεῖς (we) εὐχαριστοῦμεν (give thanks) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) ὅτι (that), παραλαβόντες (having received) λόγον (the word) ἀκοῆς (by your hearing) παρ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐδέξασθε (you accepted) οὐ (not) λόγον (the word) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (even as) ἀληθῶς (truly) ἐστὶν (it is), λόγον (the word) Θεοῦ (of God), ὃς (which) καὶ (also) ἐνεργεῖται (works) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) τοῖς (who) πιστεύουσιν (believe).

¹¹ κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) μακαρίου (blessed) Θεοῦ (God), ὃ (with which) ἐπιστεύθην (have been entrusted) ἐγώ (I).

⁸ Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) ἐπαισχυνθῇς (you should be ashamed of) τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), μηδὲ (nor) ἐμὲ (of me) τὸν (the) δέσμιον (prisoner) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ἀλλὰ (but) συνκακοπάθησον (suffer together) τῷ (for the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel), κατὰ (according to) δύναμιν (the power) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹² Δι’ (For) ἣν (this) αἰτίαν (reason) καὶ (also) ταῦτα (these things) πάσχω (I suffer). ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐπαισχύνομαι (I am ashamed); οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ᾧ (whom) πεπίστευκα (I have believed), καὶ (and) πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) ὅτι (that) δυνατός (able) ἐστιν (He is) τὴν (the) παραθήκην (deposit entrusted) μου (of me) φυλάξαι (to guard) εἰς (for) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) ἡμέραν (day).

¹⁶ Δῴη (May grant) ἔλεος (mercy) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) τῷ (to the) Ὀνησιφόρου (of Onesiphorus) οἴκῳ (household), ὅτι (because) πολλάκις (often) με (me) ἀνέψυξεν (he refreshed), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἅλυσίν (chain) μου (of me) οὐκ (not) ἐπαισχύνθη (he was ashamed of).

¹² Ζῶν (Living is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἐνεργὴς (active), καὶ (and) τομώτερος (sharper) ὑπὲρ (than) πᾶσαν (any) μάχαιραν (sword) δίστομον (two-edged), καὶ (even) διϊκνούμενος (penetrating) ἄχρι (as far as) μερισμοῦ (the division) ψυχῆς (of soul) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἁρμῶν (of joints) τε (and) καὶ (also) μυελῶν (marrows), καὶ (and) κριτικὸς (able to judge) ἐνθυμήσεων (the thoughts) καὶ (and) ἐννοιῶν (intentions) καρδίας (of the heart).

¹⁶ εἰ (if) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) Χριστιανός (a Christian), μὴ (not) αἰσχυνέσθω (let him be ashamed); δοξαζέτω (let him glorify) δὲ (however) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this).
