¹⁷ Μὴ (Not) νομίσητε (think) ὅτι (that) ἦλθον (I have come) καταλῦσαι (to abolish) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) ἢ (or) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (Prophets); οὐκ (not) ἦλθον (I have come) καταλῦσαι (to abolish), ἀλλὰ (but) πληρῶσαι (to fulfill).

¹⁵ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering), δὲ (however), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) ‹πρὸς (unto) αὐτόν› (him), “Ἄφες (Permit it) ἄρτι (presently); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) πρέπον (fitting) ἐστὶν (it is) ἡμῖν (to us) πληρῶσαι (to fulfill) πᾶσαν (all) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness).” τότε (Then) ἀφίησιν (he permits) αὐτόν (Him).

¹² Πάντα (All things) οὖν (therefore), ὅσα (as many as) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you might desire) ἵνα (that) ποιῶσιν (should do) ὑμῖν (to you) οἱ (the) ἄνθρωποι (men), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ποιεῖτε (do) αὐτοῖς (to them). οὗτος (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets).

¹⁷ εὐκοπώτερον (Easier for) δέ (however) ἐστιν (it is) τὸν (the) οὐρανὸν (heaven) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) παρελθεῖν (to pass away), ἢ (than) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law) μίαν (one) κεραίαν (stroke of a pen) πεσεῖν (to fail).

⁵ ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law), Μωϋσῆς* (Moses) ἡμῖν (us) ἐνετείλατο (commanded) τὰς (-) τοιαύτας (such) λιθάζειν* (to be stoned). σὺ (You) οὖν (therefore), τί (what) λέγεις (say You)?”

¹³ Ἔστησάν (They set) τε (also) μάρτυρας (witnesses) ψευδεῖς (false), λέγοντας (saying), “Ὁ (The) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this), οὐ (not) παύεται (does stop) λαλῶν (speaking) ῥήματα (words) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τοῦ (-) ἁγίου (holy) [τούτου] (this) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law);

¹³ λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Παρὰ (Contrary to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ἀναπείθει (persuades) οὗτος (this man) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men) σέβεσθαι (to worship) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).”

²⁸ κράζοντες (crying out), “Ἄνδρες (Men), Ἰσραηλῖται (Israelites), βοηθεῖτε (help)! οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) ὁ (who) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) τούτου (this) πάντας (all those) πανταχῇ (everywhere) διδάσκων (teaching); ἔτι (besides) τε (and) καὶ (also) Ἕλληνας (Greeks) εἰσήγαγεν (he has brought) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) καὶ (and) κεκοίνωκεν (defiled) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) τόπον (place) τοῦτον (this).”

³¹ Νόμον (Law) οὖν (then) καταργοῦμεν (do we nullify) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (Instead), νόμον (law) ἱστάνομεν (we uphold).

⁴ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) δικαίωμα (righteousness) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law) πληρωθῇ (should be fulfilled) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) τοῖς (-) μὴ (not) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh) περιπατοῦσιν (walking), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) πνεῦμα (the Spirit).

⁴ τέλος (The end) γὰρ (for) νόμου (of law) Χριστὸς (is Christ), εἰς (unto) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) πιστεύοντι (believing).

¹⁷ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say): διαθήκην (The covenant), προκεκυρωμένην (having been confirmed beforehand) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ὁ (-) μετὰ (afterward) τετρακόσια (four hundred) καὶ (and) τριάκοντα (thirty) ἔτη (years) γεγονὼς (having come), νόμος (the law) οὐκ (not) ἀκυροῖ (does annul), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) καταργῆσαι (to nullify) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise). ¹⁸ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (by) νόμου (the Law is) ἡ (the) κληρονομία (inheritance), οὐκέτι (it is no longer) ἐξ (by) ἐπαγγελίας (a promise); τῷ (-) δὲ (but) Ἀβραὰμ (to Abraham) δι’ (through) ἐπαγγελίας (a promise) κεχάρισται (has granted it) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). ¹⁹ Τί (Why) οὖν (then) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law)? τῶν (-) παραβάσεων (Transgressions) χάριν (on account of), προσετέθη (it was added), ἄχρις (until) οὗ* (that) ἔλθῃ (should have come) τὸ (the) σπέρμα (seed) ᾧ (to whom) ἐπήγγελται (promise has been made), διαταγεὶς (having been ordained) δι’ (through) ἀγγέλων (angels) ἐν (in) χειρὶ (the hand) μεσίτου (of a mediator). ²⁰ ὁ (-) δὲ (However), μεσίτης (a mediator) ἑνὸς (of one person) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is); ὁ (-) δὲ (but) Θεὸς (God) εἷς (one) ἐστιν (is). ²¹ Ὁ (The) οὖν (therefore) νόμος (Law) κατὰ (is contrary to) τῶν (the) ἐπαγγελιῶν (promises) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἐδόθη (had been given) νόμος (a law) ὁ (-) δυνάμενος (being able) ζωοποιῆσαι (to impart life), ὄντως (indeed) ἐκ (from out of) νόμου (the Law) ἂν (-) ἦν (would have emerged) ἡ (-) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness); ²² ἀλλὰ (but) συνέκλεισεν (imprisoned) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ὑπὸ (under) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise), ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (from Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δοθῇ (might be given) τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing). ²³ Πρὸ (Before) τοῦ (-) δὲ (now) ἐλθεῖν (came) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith), ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) ἐφρουρούμεθα (we were held in custody), συνκλειόμενοι (having been locked up) εἰς (until) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (being about) πίστιν (faith) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed), ²⁴ ὥστε (so that) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law) παιδαγωγὸς (trainer) ἡμῶν (of us) γέγονεν (has become), εἰς (unto) Χριστόν (Christ), ἵνα (so that) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) δικαιωθῶμεν (we might be justified).

⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἦλθεν (had come) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τοῦ (of the) χρόνου (time), ἐξαπέστειλεν (sent forth) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of him), γενόμενον (having been born) ἐκ (of) γυναικός (a woman), γενόμενον (having been born) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law), ⁵ ἵνα (that) τοὺς (those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) ἐξαγοράσῃ (He might redeem), ἵνα (so that) τὴν (the) υἱοθεσίαν (divine adoption as sons) ἀπολάβωμεν (we might receive).

¹⁶ Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) κρινέτω (let judge) ἐν (in regard to) βρώσει (food), καὶ (or) ἐν (in regard to) πόσει (drink), ἢ (or) ἐν (in) μέρει (regard) ἑορτῆς (to a feast), ἢ (or) νεομηνίας (a New Moon), ἢ (or) σαββάτων (Sabbaths), ¹⁷ ἅ (which) ἐστιν (are) σκιὰ (a shadow) τῶν (the things) μελλόντων (coming); τὸ (the) δὲ (however) σῶμα (body is) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

³ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (these), ἀνάμνησις (there is a reminder) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) κατ’ (every) ἐνιαυτόν (year). ⁴ ἀδύνατον (Impossible it is) γὰρ (indeed) αἷμα (for the blood) ταύρων (of bulls) καὶ (and) τράγων (of goats) ἀφαιρεῖν (to take away) ἁμαρτίας (sins). ⁵ Διὸ (Therefore) εἰσερχόμενος (coming) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), λέγει (He says): “Θυσίαν (Sacrifice) καὶ (and) προσφορὰν (offering) οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησας (You have desired), Σῶμα (a body) δὲ (however) κατηρτίσω (You have prepared) μοι (me). ⁶ Ὁλοκαυτώματα (Burnt offerings) καὶ (and) περὶ (offerings for) ἁμαρτίας (sin) Οὐκ (not) εὐδόκησας (You have delighted in). ⁷ Τότε (Then) εἶπον (I said), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἥκω (I have come) — Ἐν (in) κεφαλίδι (the scroll) βιβλίου (of the book) γέγραπται (it is written) περὶ (of) ἐμοῦ (Me) — Τοῦ (-) ποιῆσαι (to do), ὁ (-) Θεός (O God), τὸ (the) θέλημά (will) σου (of You).’” ⁸ Ἀνώτερον (Above) λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Θυσίας (Sacrifice), καὶ (and) προσφορὰς (offering), καὶ (and) ὁλοκαυτώματα (burnt offerings), καὶ (and) περὶ (offerings for) ἁμαρτίας (sin), οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησας (You have desired), οὐδὲ (nor) εὐδόκησας (have You delighted in),” αἵτινες (which) κατὰ (according to) νόμον (the Law) προσφέρονται (are offered); ⁹ τότε (then) εἴρηκεν (He said), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἥκω (I have come) τοῦ (-) ποιῆσαι (to do) τὸ (the) θέλημά (will) σου (of You).” ἀναιρεῖ (He takes away) τὸ (the) πρῶτον (first), ἵνα (that) τὸ (the) δεύτερον (second) στήσῃ (He might establish). ¹⁰ ἐν (By) ᾧ (that) θελήματι (will), ἡγιασμένοι (having been sanctified) ἐσμὲν (we are), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) προσφορᾶς (offering) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐφάπαξ (once for all). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) πᾶς (every) μὲν (indeed) ἱερεὺς (priest) ἕστηκεν (stands) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) λειτουργῶν (ministering), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) αὐτὰς (same) πολλάκις (repeatedly) προσφέρων (offering) θυσίας (sacrifices), αἵτινες (which) οὐδέποτε (never) δύνανται (are able) περιελεῖν (to take away) ἁμαρτίας (sins). ¹² οὗτος (This One) δὲ (however), μίαν (one) ὑπὲρ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) προσενέγκας (having offered) θυσίαν (sacrifice) εἰς (in) τὸ (-) διηνεκὲς (perpetuity), ἐκάθισεν (sat down) ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (the right hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),
