⁵⁵ Ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour), εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds), “Ὡς (As) ἐπὶ (against) λῃστὴν (a robber) ἐξήλθατε (did you come out) μετὰ (with) μαχαιρῶν (swords) καὶ (and) ξύλων (clubs) συλλαβεῖν (to capture) με (Me)? καθ’ (Every) ἡμέραν (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἐκαθεζόμην (I was sitting) διδάσκων (teaching), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐκρατήσατέ (you did seize) με (Me).

⁴³ Καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἔτι (while yet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λαλοῦντος (speaking), παραγίνεται (comes up) 〈ὁ〉 (-) Ἰούδας (Judas), εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) δώδεκα (Twelve), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὄχλος (a crowd) μετὰ (with) μαχαιρῶν (swords) καὶ (and) ξύλων (clubs), παρὰ (from) τῶν (the) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders). ⁴⁴ Δεδώκει (Had given) δὲ (then) ὁ (the one) παραδιδοὺς (delivering up) αὐτὸν (Him) σύσσημον (a sign) αὐτοῖς (to them), λέγων (saying): “Ὃν (Whomever) ἂν (-) φιλήσω (I shall kiss), αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (is); κρατήσατε (seize) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἀπάγετε (lead Him away) ἀσφαλῶς (securely).” ⁴⁵ καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having arrived), εὐθὺς (immediately) προσελθὼν (having come up) αὐτῷ (to Him), λέγει (he says), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi)!” καὶ (And) κατεφίλησεν (he kissed) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴⁶ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἐπέβαλαν (they laid) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτῷ (on Him) καὶ (and) ἐκράτησαν (seized) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴⁷ εἷς (One) δέ (then), τις (a certain) τῶν (of those) παρεστηκότων (standing by), σπασάμενος (having drawn) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword), ἔπαισεν (struck) τὸν (the) δοῦλον (servant) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest) καὶ (and) ἀφεῖλεν (cut off) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὸ (the) ὠτάριον (ear). ⁴⁸ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὡς (As) ἐπὶ (against) λῃστὴν (a robber) ἐξήλθατε (are you come out) μετὰ (with) μαχαιρῶν (swords) καὶ (and) ξύλων (clubs) συλλαβεῖν (to capture) με (Me)? ⁴⁹ καθ’ (Every) ἡμέραν (day) ἤμην (I was) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) διδάσκων (teaching), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐκρατήσατέ (you did seize) με (Me). ἀλλ’ (But it is) ἵνα (that) πληρωθῶσιν (may be fulfilled) αἱ (the) γραφαί (Scriptures).” ⁵⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀφέντες (having left) αὐτὸν (Him), ἔφυγον (fled) πάντες (all).

⁴⁷ Ἔτι (While still) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λαλοῦντος (speaking), ἰδοὺ (behold), ὄχλος (a crowd), καὶ (and) ὁ (he who) λεγόμενος (is called) Ἰούδας (Judas), εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) δώδεκα (Twelve), προήρχετο (was going before) αὐτούς (them), καὶ (and) ἤγγισεν (he drew near) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) φιλῆσαι (to kiss) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴⁸ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (then) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἰούδα (Judas), φιλήματι (with a kiss) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδως (are you betraying)?” ⁴⁹ Ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (then) οἱ (those) περὶ (around) αὐτὸν (Him) τὸ (what) ἐσόμενον (would be), εἶπαν (they said), “Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) πατάξομεν (will we strike) ἐν (with the) μαχαίρῃ (sword)?” ⁵⁰ καὶ (And) ἐπάταξεν (struck) εἷς (one) τις (a certain) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest) τὸν (the) δοῦλον (servant), καὶ (and) ἀφεῖλεν (cut off) τὸ (the) οὖς (ear), αὐτοῦ (his) τὸ (-) δεξιόν (right). ⁵¹ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐᾶτε (Allow you) ἕως (as far as) τούτου (thus)!” καὶ (And) ἁψάμενος (having touched) τοῦ (the) ὠτίου (ear), ἰάσατο (He healed) αὐτόν (him). ⁵² Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (those) παραγενομένους (having come out) ἐπ’ (against) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), καὶ (and) στρατηγοὺς (captains) τοῦ (of the) ἱεροῦ (temple), καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρους (elders), “Ὡς (As) ἐπὶ (against) λῃστὴν (a robber) ἐξήλθατε (have you come out) μετὰ (with) μαχαιρῶν (swords) καὶ (and) ξύλων (clubs)? ⁵³ καθ’ (Every) ἡμέραν (day) ὄντος (being) μου (of Me) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), οὐκ (not) ἐξετείνατε (did you stretch out) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἐπ’ (against) ἐμέ (Me); ἀλλ’ (but) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡ (the) ὥρα (hour), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐξουσία (power) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness).”

¹ Ταῦτα (These things) εἰπὼν (having said), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) χειμάρρου (winter stream) τοῦ* (-) Κέδρων (of Kidron), ὅπου (where) ἦν (there was) κῆπος (a garden), εἰς (into) ὃν (which) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) αὐτὸς (He) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ² ᾔδει (Knew) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) Ἰούδας (Judas), ὁ (who) παραδιδοὺς (was delivering up) αὐτὸν (Him), τὸν (the) τόπον (place), ὅτι (because) πολλάκις (often) συνήχθη (gathered together) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐκεῖ (there) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³ ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰούδας (Judas), λαβὼν (having procured) τὴν (the) σπεῖραν (cohort) καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ὑπηρέτας (officers), ἔρχεται (comes) ἐκεῖ (there) μετὰ (with) φανῶν (lanterns), καὶ (and) λαμπάδων (torches), καὶ (and) ὅπλων (weapons). ⁴ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὖν (therefore), εἰδὼς (knowing) πάντα (all things) τὰ (that) ἐρχόμενα (are coming) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτὸν (Him), ἐξῆλθεν (having gone forth) καὶ (also) λέγει (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τίνα (Whom) ζητεῖτε (seek you)?” ⁵ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) αὐτῷ (Him), “Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (of) Ναζωραῖον (Nazareth).” Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He).” Εἱστήκει (Had been standing) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) Ἰούδας (Judas), ὁ (who) παραδιδοὺς (is delivering up) αὐτὸν (Him), μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them). ⁶ ὡς (When) οὖν (therefore) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He),” ἀπῆλθον* (they drew) εἰς (toward) τὰ (the) ὀπίσω (back) καὶ (and) ἔπεσαν (fell) χαμαί (to the ground). ⁷ Πάλιν (Again) οὖν (therefore) ἐπηρώτησεν (He questioned) αὐτούς (them), “Τίνα (Whom) ζητεῖτε (seek you)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (of) Ναζωραῖον (Nazareth).” ⁸ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἶπον (I have told) ὑμῖν (you) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He). εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐμὲ (Me) ζητεῖτε (you seek), ἄφετε (Allow) τούτους (these) ὑπάγειν (to go away),” ⁹ ἵνα (so that) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὃν (that) εἶπεν (He had spoken) ὅτι (-), “Οὓς (Those whom) δέδωκάς (You have given) μοι (Me), οὐκ (not) ἀπώλεσα (I lost) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) οὐδένα (not one).” ¹⁰ Σίμων (Simon) οὖν (then) Πέτρος (Peter), ἔχων (having) μάχαιραν (a sword), εἵλκυσεν (drew) αὐτὴν (it) καὶ (and) ἔπαισεν (struck) τὸν (the) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest) δοῦλον (servant), καὶ (and) ἀπέκοψεν (cut off) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὸ (the) ὠτάριον (ear) τὸ (-) δεξιόν (right). ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ὄνομα (name) τῷ (of the) δούλῳ (servant) Μάλχος (Malchus). ¹¹ εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Βάλε (Put) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θήκην (sheath). τὸ (The) ποτήριον (cup) ὃ (which) δέδωκέν (has given) μοι (Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πίω (shall I drink) αὐτό (it)?”
