⁸ Ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (then) γενομένης (having arrived), λέγει (says) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) τῷ (to) ἐπιτρόπῳ (foreman) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Κάλεσον (Call) τοὺς (the) ἐργάτας (workmen) καὶ (and) ἀπόδος (pay) ‹αὐτοῖς› (them) τὸν (the) μισθόν (wages), ἀρξάμενος (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐσχάτων (last) ἕως (unto) τῶν (the) πρώτων (first).’

³⁹ ὁ (-) δὲ (and) ἐχθρὸς (the enemy) ὁ (-) σπείρας (having sown) αὐτά (them) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil); ὁ (-) δὲ (and) θερισμὸς (the harvest) συντέλεια (the consummation) αἰῶνός (of the age) ἐστιν (is), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) θερισταὶ (the harvesters) ἄγγελοί (angels) εἰσιν (are). ⁴⁰ Ὥσπερ (As) οὖν (therefore) συλλέγεται (is gathered) τὰ (the) ζιζάνια (weeds), καὶ (and) πυρὶ (in fire) κατακαίεται (is consumed), οὕτως (thus) ἔσται (it will be) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συντελείᾳ (consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age).

¹⁹ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) πολὺν (much) χρόνον (time), ἔρχεται (comes) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τῶν (of the) δούλων (servants) ἐκείνων (those) καὶ (and) συναίρει (takes) λόγον (account) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them).

³¹ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), τότε (then) καθίσει (He will sit) ἐπὶ (upon the) θρόνου (throne) δόξης (of glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

³ καὶ (and) Ἰωάννα (Joanna) γυνὴ (wife) Χουζᾶ (of Chuza), ἐπιτρόπου (a steward) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod), καὶ (and) Σουσάννα (Susanna), καὶ (and) ἕτεραι (others) πολλαί (many), αἵτινες (who) διηκόνουν (were ministering) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) ὑπαρχόντων (means) αὐταῖς (their own).

⁷ ἐν (In) αὐτῇ (the same) δὲ (now) τῇ (-) οἰκίᾳ (house) μένετε (remain), ἐσθίοντες* (eating) καὶ (and) πίνοντες (drinking) τὰ (the things supplied) παρ’ (by) αὐτῶν (them); ἄξιος (worthy is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) ἐργάτης (workman) τοῦ (of the) μισθοῦ (wages) αὐτοῦ (of him). μὴ (Not) μεταβαίνετε (move) ἐξ (from) οἰκίας (house) εἰς (to) οἰκίαν (house).

⁴² Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the) πιστὸς (faithful) οἰκονόμος (manager) ὁ (and the) φρόνιμος (wise), ὃν (whom) καταστήσει (will set) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) ἐπὶ (over) τῆς (the) θεραπείας (care of servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), τοῦ (-) διδόναι (to give them) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (season) τὸ (the) σιτομέτριον (measure of food)?

¹ Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητάς (disciples), “Ἄνθρωπός (A man) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) πλούσιος (rich), ὃς (who) εἶχεν (had) οἰκονόμον (a manager), καὶ (and) οὗτος (he) διεβλήθη (was accused) αὐτῷ (unto him) ὡς (as) διασκορπίζων (is wasting) τὰ (the) ὑπάρχοντα (possessions) αὐτοῦ (of him). ² καὶ (And) φωνήσας (having called) αὐτὸν (him), εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Τί (What is) τοῦτο (this) ἀκούω (I hear) περὶ (concerning) σοῦ (you)? ἀπόδος (Give) τὸν (the) λόγον (account) τῆς (of the) οἰκονομίας (stewardship) σου (of you); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) δύνῃ (you are able) ἔτι (any longer) οἰκονομεῖν (to manage).’

⁶ ὃς (who) “Ἀποδώσει (will give) ἑκάστῳ (to each), κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him),” ⁷ τοῖς (to those who) μὲν (indeed) καθ’ (with) ὑπομονὴν (endurance) ἔργου (in work) ἀγαθοῦ (good), δόξαν (glory) καὶ (and) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) ἀφθαρσίαν (immortality) ζητοῦσιν (are seeking), ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); ⁸ τοῖς (to those) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) ἐριθείας (self-interest) καὶ (and) ἀπειθοῦσι (disobeying) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), πειθομένοις (being persuaded about) δὲ (however) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), ὀργὴ (wrath) καὶ (and) θυμός (anger); ⁹ θλῖψις (tribulation) καὶ (and) στενοχωρία (distress) ἐπὶ (upon) πᾶσαν (every) ψυχὴν (soul) ἀνθρώπου (of man) τοῦ (-) κατεργαζομένου (working) τὸ (-) κακόν (evil), Ἰουδαίου (of Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first), καὶ (and also) Ἕλληνος (of Greek); ¹⁰ δόξα (glory) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) τιμὴ (honor), καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) ἐργαζομένῳ (doing) τὸ (-) ἀγαθόν (good), Ἰουδαίῳ (to Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first), καὶ (and) Ἕλληνι (to Greek).

¹ Οὕτως (So) ἡμᾶς (us), λογιζέσθω (let regard) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ὡς (as) ὑπηρέτας (servants) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) καὶ (and) οἰκονόμους (stewards) μυστηρίων (of the mysteries) Θεοῦ (of God). ² ὧδε (In this case) λοιπὸν (moreover), ζητεῖται (it is required) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οἰκονόμοις (stewards), ἵνα (that) πιστός (faithful) τις (one) εὑρεθῇ (shall be found).

¹⁰ τοὺς (-) γὰρ (For) πάντας (all) ἡμᾶς (of us) φανερωθῆναι (to be revealed) δεῖ (it behooves) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ἵνα (that) κομίσηται (may receive back) ἕκαστος (each) τὰ (the things done) διὰ (in) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body), πρὸς (according to) ἃ (what) ἔπραξεν (he did), εἴτε (whether) ἀγαθὸν (good) εἴτε (or) φαῦλον (evil).

⁷ Δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνέγκλητον (blameless) εἶναι (to be), ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκονόμον (steward); μὴ (not) αὐθάδη (self-willed), μὴ (not) ὀργίλον (quick tempered), μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδῆ (greedy of base gain),

²⁸ οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ), ἅπαξ (once) προσενεχθεὶς (having been offered) εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) πολλῶν (of many) ἀνενεγκεῖν (to bear) ἁμαρτίας (the sins), ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (a second time), χωρὶς (apart from) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ὀφθήσεται (will appear) τοῖς (to those) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπεκδεχομένοις (awaiting) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (salvation).

¹⁰ ἕκαστος (each) καθὼς (as) ἔλαβεν (has received) χάρισμα (a gift), εἰς (to) ἑαυτοὺς (each other) αὐτὸ (them) διακονοῦντες (serving), ὡς (as) καλοὶ (good) οἰκονόμοι (stewards) ποικίλης (of the manifold) χάριτος (grace) Θεοῦ (of God):

¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) θρόνον (a throne) μέγαν (great) λευκὸν (white), καὶ (and) τὸν (the One) καθήμενον (sitting) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (it), οὗ (whose) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) προσώπου (face) ἔφυγεν (fled) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) οὐρανός (heaven), καὶ (and) τόπος (place) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) αὐτοῖς (for them). ¹² καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) τοὺς (the) νεκρούς (dead), τοὺς (-) μεγάλους (great) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) μικρούς (small), ἑστῶτας (standing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne), καὶ (and) βιβλία (books) ἠνοίχθησαν (were opened). Καὶ (And) ἄλλο (another) βιβλίον (book) ἠνοίχθη (was opened), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (the one) ζωῆς (of life). καὶ (And) ἐκρίθησαν (were judged) οἱ (the) νεκροὶ (dead) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the things) γεγραμμένων (having been written) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) βιβλίοις (books), κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them).
