⁴³ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean) πνεῦμα (spirit) ἐξέλθῃ (is gone out) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man), διέρχεται (it passes) δι’ (through) ἀνύδρων (waterless) τόπων (places) ζητοῦν (seeking) ἀνάπαυσιν (rest), καὶ (and) οὐχ (none) εὑρίσκει (finds it).

²⁹ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἔκραξαν (they cried out), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (What) ἡμῖν (to us) καὶ (and) σοί (to you), Υἱὲ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? ἦλθες (Are You come) ὧδε (here) πρὸ (before the) καιροῦ (time) βασανίσαι (to torment) ἡμᾶς (us)?”

⁷ καὶ (And) κράξας (having cried) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), λέγει (he said), “Τί (What) ἐμοὶ (to me) καὶ (and) σοί (to You), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), Υἱὲ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τοῦ (the) Ὑψίστου (Most High)? ὁρκίζω (I adjure) σε (You) τὸν (-) Θεόν (by God), μή (not) με (me) βασανίσῃς (torment).” ⁸ ἔλεγεν (He was saying) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἔξελθε (You come forth), τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τὸ (-) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean), ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man)!” ⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτα (He was asking) αὐτόν (him), “Τί (What is) ὄνομά (the name) σοι (of you)?” Καὶ (And) λέγει (saying), αὐτῷ (he answered), “Λεγιὼν (Legion) ὄνομά (is name) μοι (to Me), ὅτι (because) πολλοί (many) ἐσμεν (we are).” ¹⁰ καὶ (And) παρεκάλει (he begged) αὐτὸν (Him) πολλὰ (numerous times) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) αὐτὰ (them) ἀποστείλῃ (He would send) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) χώρας (country). ¹¹ Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) ἐκεῖ (there), πρὸς (near) τῷ (the) ὄρει (mountain), ἀγέλη (a herd) χοίρων (of pigs) μεγάλη (great) βοσκομένη (feeding). ¹² καὶ (And) παρεκάλεσαν (they begged) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Πέμψον (Send) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) τοὺς (the) χοίρους (pigs), ἵνα (so that) εἰς (into) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰσέλθωμεν (we may enter).” ¹³ Καὶ (And) ἐπέτρεψεν (He allowed) αὐτοῖς (them). καὶ (And) ἐξελθόντα (having gone out), τὰ (the) πνεύματα (spirits) τὰ (-) ἀκάθαρτα (unclean) εἰσῆλθον (entered) εἰς (into) τοὺς (the) χοίρους (pigs), καὶ (and) ὥρμησεν (rushed) ἡ (the) ἀγέλη (herd) κατὰ (down) τοῦ (the) κρημνοῦ (steep bank) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), ὡς (about) δισχίλιοι (two thousand), καὶ (and) ἐπνίγοντο (they were drowned) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θαλάσσῃ (sea).

²⁸ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἀνακράξας (having cried out), προσέπεσεν (he fell down before) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) εἶπεν (said), “Τί (What) ἐμοὶ (to me) καὶ (and) σοί (to You), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), Υἱὲ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the) Ὑψίστου (Most High)? δέομαί (I implore) σου (of You) μή (not) με (me) βασανίσῃς (You might torment)!” ²⁹ παρήγγελλεν (He was commanding) γὰρ (for) τῷ (the) πνεύματι (spirit) τῷ (-) ἀκαθάρτῳ (unclean) ἐξελθεῖν (to come out) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man). πολλοῖς (Many) γὰρ (for) χρόνοις (times) συνηρπάκει (it had seized) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) ἐδεσμεύετο (he was bound), ἁλύσεσιν (with chains) καὶ (and) πέδαις (shackles) φυλασσόμενος (being kept); καὶ (and) διαρρήσσων (breaking) τὰ (the) δεσμὰ (chains), ἠλαύνετο (he was driven) ὑπὸ* (by) τοῦ (the) δαιμονίου (demon) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) ἐρήμους (deserts). ³⁰ Ἐπηρώτησεν (Asked) δὲ (now) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Τί (What) σοι (your) ὄνομά (name) ἐστιν (is)?” ὁ (-) Δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said), “Λεγιών (Legion),” ὅτι (because) εἰσῆλθεν (were entered) δαιμόνια (demons) πολλὰ (many) εἰς (into) αὐτόν (him). ³¹ καὶ (And) παρεκάλουν (they were begging) αὐτὸν (Him), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐπιτάξῃ (he would command) αὐτοῖς (them) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἄβυσσον (abyss) ἀπελθεῖν (to go away). ³² Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) ἐκεῖ (there) ἀγέλη (a herd) χοίρων (of pigs) ἱκανῶν (many) βοσκομένη (feeding), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὄρει (mountain), καὶ (and) παρεκάλεσαν (they begged) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) ἐπιτρέψῃ (He would allow) αὐτοῖς (them) εἰς (into) ἐκείνους (them) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter); καὶ (and) ἐπέτρεψεν (He allowed) αὐτοῖς (them).

²⁴ Ὅταν (When) τὸ (the) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean) πνεῦμα (spirit) ἐξέλθῃ (is gone out) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man), διέρχεται (it passes) δι’ (through) ἀνύδρων (waterless) τόπων (places) ζητοῦν (seeking) ἀνάπαυσιν (rest); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) εὑρίσκον (finding any), [τότε] (then) λέγει (it says), ‘Ὑποστρέψω (I will return) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκόν (house) μου (of me), ὅθεν (from where) ἐξῆλθον (I came out).’ ²⁵ καὶ (And) ἐλθὸν (having come), εὑρίσκει (it finds it) σεσαρωμένον (swept) καὶ (and) κεκοσμημένον (put in order). ²⁶ τότε (Then) πορεύεται (it goes) καὶ (and) παραλαμβάνει (takes) ἕτερα (other) πνεύματα (spirits) πονηρότερα (more evil) ἑαυτοῦ (than itself), ἑπτά (seven), καὶ (and) εἰσελθόντα (having entered), κατοικεῖ (they dwell) ἐκεῖ (there); καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐκείνου (that) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first).”

¹³ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Σίμων (Simon) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (himself) ἐπίστευσεν (believed), καὶ (and) βαπτισθεὶς (having been baptized), ἦν (was) προσκαρτερῶν (steadfastly continuing) τῷ (-) Φιλίππῳ (with Philip). θεωρῶν (Beholding) τε (then) σημεῖα (the signs) καὶ (and) δυνάμεις (miracles) μεγάλας (great) γινομένας (being performed), ἐξίστατο (he was amazed).
