¹² ἀπὸ (From) δὲ (then) τῶν (the) ἡμερῶν (days) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist) ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now), ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) βιάζεται (is taken by violence), καὶ (and the) βιασταὶ (violent) ἁρπάζουσιν (claim) αὐτήν (it).

²³ Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντος (having come) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) διδάσκοντι (teaching), οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐν (By) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (are You doing)? καὶ (And) τίς (who) σοι (to You) ἔδωκεν (gave) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this)?” ²⁴ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐρωτήσω (Will ask) ὑμᾶς (you) κἀγὼ (I also) λόγον (thing) ἕνα (one), ὃν (which) ἐὰν (if) εἴπητέ (you tell) μοι (Me), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐρῶ (will say) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do). ²⁵ τὸ (The) βάπτισμα (baptism) τὸ (of) Ἰωάννου (John), πόθεν (from where) ἦν (was it)? ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἢ (or) ἐξ (from) ἀνθρώπων (men)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) διελογίζοντο (they were reasoning) ἐν (with) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven),’ ἐρεῖ (He will say) ἡμῖν (to us), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὖν (then) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (did you believe) αὐτῷ (him)?’ ²⁶ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men),’ φοβούμεθα (we fear) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) ἔχουσιν (hold) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John).” ²⁷ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εἶπαν (they said), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (do we know).” Ἔφη (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (also) αὐτός (He), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do). ²⁸ Τί (What) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (you) δοκεῖ (think)? ἄνθρωπος (A man) εἶχεν (had) τέκνα (sons) δύο (two), [καὶ] (and) προσελθὼν (having come) τῷ (to the) πρώτῳ (first) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Τέκνον (Son), ὕπαγε (go) σήμερον (today), ἐργάζου (work) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀμπελῶνι (vineyard).’ ²⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘‹Οὐ (Not) θέλω (will I).’ ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (however), μεταμεληθεὶς› (having repented), ἀπῆλθεν (he went). ³⁰ Προσελθὼν (Having come) δὲ (then) τῷ (to the) δευτέρῳ (second), εἶπεν (he said) ὡσαύτως (likewise). Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἐγώ* (I will) κύριε* (sir),’ καὶ* (and) οὐκ* (not) ἀπῆλθεν (did he go). ³¹ Τίς (Which) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἐποίησεν (did) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father)?” Λέγουσιν (They say), “Ὁ (The) πρῶτος* (first).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) προάγουσιν (go before) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³² ἦλθεν (Came) γὰρ (for) Ἰωάννης (John) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in the) ὁδῷ (way) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (you did believe) αὐτῷ (him), οἱ (-) δὲ (however) τελῶναι (the tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) αὐτῷ (him); ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (then), ἰδόντες (having seen), οὐδὲ (not even) μετεμελήθητε (did repent) ὕστερον (afterward) τοῦ (-) πιστεῦσαι (to believe) αὐτῷ (him).

²⁹ Καὶ (And) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἀκούσας (having heard), καὶ (even) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors), ἐδικαίωσαν (declared as righteous) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), βαπτισθέντες (having been baptized with) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John); ³⁰ οἱ (-) δὲ (but) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) νομικοὶ (lawyers), τὴν (the) βουλὴν (counsel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἠθέτησαν (rejected) εἰς (as to) ἑαυτούς (themselves), μὴ (not) βαπτισθέντες (having been baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him).

²⁴ “Ἀγωνίζεσθε (Strive) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) στενῆς (narrow) θύρας (door); ὅτι (for) πολλοί (many), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ζητήσουσιν (will seek) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter in), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσουσιν (will be able).

¹⁶ Ὁ (The) νόμος (law) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets were) μέχρι (until) Ἰωάννου (John); ἀπὸ (from) τότε (that time) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εὐαγγελίζεται (is proclaimed), καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) εἰς (into) αὐτὴν (it) βιάζεται (forces his way).

²⁷ ἐργάζεσθε (Work) μὴ (not for) τὴν (the) βρῶσιν (food) τὴν (that) ἀπολλυμένην (is perishing), ἀλλὰ (but for) τὴν (the) βρῶσιν (food) τὴν (-) μένουσαν (enduring) εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), ἣν (which) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ὑμῖν (to you) δώσει (will give). τοῦτον (Him) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐσφράγισεν (has sealed), ὁ (-) Θεός (God).”

¹¹ ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πρὸς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑμᾶς (you) στῆναι (to stand) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) μεθοδείας (schemes) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil), ¹² ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡμῖν (to us) ἡ (the) πάλη (wrestling) πρὸς (against) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) σάρκα (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἀρχάς (rulers), πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), πρὸς (against) τοὺς (the) κοσμοκράτορας (cosmic powers) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness) τούτου (this), πρὸς (against) τὰ (the) πνευματικὰ (spiritual forces) τῆς (-) πονηρίας (of evil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms). ¹³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἀναλάβετε (take up) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) δυνηθῆτε (you may be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to withstand) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) πονηρᾷ (evil), καὶ (and) ἅπαντα (all things) κατεργασάμενοι (having done), στῆναι (to stand).

¹² Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved) μου (of me), καθὼς (just as) πάντοτε (always) ὑπηκούσατε (you have obeyed), μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (presence) μου (of me) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) νῦν (now) πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπουσίᾳ (absence) μου (of me), μετὰ (with) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) τρόμου (trembling) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῶν (your own) σωτηρίαν (salvation) κατεργάζεσθε (work out).
