⁵³ Καὶ (And) κατεγέλων (they were laughing at) αὐτοῦ (Him), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἀπέθανεν (she was dead).

⁴⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐθαύμασεν (wondered) εἰ (if) ἤδη (already) τέθνηκεν (He were dead). καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) τὸν (the) κεντυρίωνα (centurion), ἐπηρώτησεν (he questioned) αὐτὸν (him) εἰ (whether) πάλαι (already) ἀπέθανεν (He had died). ⁴⁵ καὶ (And) γνοὺς (having known it) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) κεντυρίωνος (centurion), ἐδωρήσατο (He granted) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) τῷ (-) Ἰωσήφ (to Joseph).

¹⁴ Ἤκουον (Were listening to) δὲ (now) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), φιλάργυροι (lovers of money) ὑπάρχοντες (being), καὶ (and) ἐξεμυκτήριζον (they were ridiculing) αὐτόν (Him).

³⁹ λέγει (Says) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄρατε (Take away) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡ (the) ἀδελφὴ (sister) τοῦ (of the one) τετελευτηκότος (having died), Μάρθα (Martha), “Κύριε (Lord), ἤδη (already) ὄζει (he stinks), τεταρταῖος (four days) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (it is).”

³³ ἐπὶ (to) δὲ (however) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐλθόντες (having come), ὡς (when) εἶδον (they saw) ἤδη (already) αὐτὸν (Him) τεθνηκότα (having been dead), οὐ (not) κατέαξαν (they did break) αὐτοῦ (His) τὰ (-) σκέλη (legs). ³⁴ ἀλλ’ (But) εἷς (one) τῶν (of the) στρατιωτῶν (soldiers) λόγχῃ (with a spear) αὐτοῦ (His) τὴν (-) πλευρὰν (side) ἔνυξεν (pierced), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (came out) εὐθὺς (immediately) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) ὕδωρ (water). ³⁵ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ἑωρακὼς (having seen) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has borne witness), καὶ (and) ἀληθινὴ (true) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony). καὶ (And) ἐκεῖνος (He) οἶδεν (knows) ὅτι (that) ἀληθῆ (truth) λέγει (he is speaking), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πιστεύητε (might believe).
