¹⁶ ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) ὁ (-) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐν (in) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), φῶς (a light) εἶδεν (have seen) μέγα (great), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to those) καθημένοις (sitting) ἐν (in the) χώρᾳ (land) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (shadow) θανάτου (of death), φῶς (a light) ἀνέτειλεν (has dawned) αὐτοῖς (on them).”

³ “Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) πτωχοὶ (poor) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit), Ὅτι (for) αὐτῶν (theirs) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).

²⁷ Καὶ (And) παράγοντι (passing on) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἠκολούθησαν (followed) ‹αὐτῷ› (Him) δύο (two) τυφλοὶ (blind men), κράζοντες (crying out) καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐλέησον (Have mercy on) ἡμᾶς (us), υἱὸς (Son) Δαυίδ (of David).” ²⁸ Ἐλθόντι (Having come) δὲ (now) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house), προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) τυφλοί (blind men), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πιστεύετε (Believe you) ὅτι (that) δύναμαι (I am able) τοῦτο (this) ποιῆσαι (to do)?” Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ναί (Yes), Κύριε (Lord).” ²⁹ Τότε (Then) ἥψατο (He touched) τῶν (the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγων (saying), “Κατὰ (According to) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) γενηθήτω (be it) ὑμῖν (to you).” ³⁰ καὶ (And) ἠνεῴχθησαν (were opened) αὐτῶν (their) οἱ (-) ὀφθαλμοί (eyes). καὶ (And) ἐνεβριμήθη (strictly instructed) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ὁρᾶτε (See that) μηδεὶς (no one) γινωσκέτω (knows).”

⁵ τυφλοὶ (Blind) ἀναβλέπουσιν (receive sight), καὶ (and) χωλοὶ (lame) περιπατοῦσιν (walk), λεπροὶ (lepers) καθαρίζονται (are cleansed), καὶ (and) κωφοὶ (deaf) ἀκούουσιν (hear), καὶ (and) νεκροὶ (dead) ἐγείρονται (are raised), καὶ (and) πτωχοὶ (poor) εὐαγγελίζονται (are gospelized).

²⁰ κάλαμον (A reed) συντετριμμένον (bruised) οὐ (not) κατεάξει (He will break), καὶ (and) λίνον (a wick) τυφόμενον (smoldering) οὐ (not) σβέσει (He will quench), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἐκβάλῃ (He leads) εἰς (to) νῖκος (victory) τὴν (-) κρίσιν (justice).

²⁰ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He), ἐπάρας (having lifted up) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (gaze) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (upon) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἔλεγεν (was saying): “Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) πτωχοί (poor), Ὅτι (for) ὑμετέρα (yours) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²² καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορευθέντες (Having gone), ἀπαγγείλατε (relate) Ἰωάννῃ (to John) ἃ (what) εἴδετε (you have seen) καὶ (and) ἠκούσατε (heard): τυφλοὶ (Blind) ἀναβλέπουσιν (receive sight), χωλοὶ (lame) περιπατοῦσιν (walk), λεπροὶ (lepers) καθαρίζονται (are cleansed), καὶ (and) κωφοὶ (deaf) ἀκούουσιν (hear), νεκροὶ (dead) ἐγείρονται (are raised), πτωχοὶ (poor) εὐαγγελίζονται (are gospelized).

⁴¹ εὑρίσκει (Finds) οὗτος (he) πρῶτον (first) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) τὸν (-) ἴδιον (own) Σίμωνα (Simon), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Εὑρήκαμεν (We have found) τὸν (the) Μεσσίαν (Messiah),”— ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) μεθερμηνευόμενον (translated) Χριστός (Christ).

³⁴ ὃν (He whom) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) λαλεῖ (speaks), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (by) μέτρου (measure) δίδωσιν (He gives) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit).

³⁹ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰς (For) κρίμα (judgment) ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) τοῦτον (this) ἦλθον (came), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέπωσιν (may see); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) βλέποντες (seeing), τυφλοὶ (blind) γένωνται (may become).” ⁴⁰ ἤκουσαν (Heard) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ταῦτα (these things), οἱ (who) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὄντες (were), καὶ (and) εἶπον* (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) τυφλοί (blind) ἐσμεν (are)?” ⁴¹ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Εἰ (If) τυφλοὶ (blind) ἦτε (you were), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) εἴχετε (you would have) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); νῦν (since) δὲ (however) λέγετε (you say) ὅτι (-), ‘Βλέπομεν (We see),’ ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ὑμῶν (of you) μένει (remains).”

⁴⁶ ἐγὼ (I) φῶς (a light) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἐλήλυθα (have come), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (should abide).

²⁷ Συνήχθησαν (Were gathered together) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (in) ἀληθείας (truth), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (this), ἐπὶ (against) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) Παῖδά (servant) σου (of You) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ὃν (whom) ἔχρισας (You anointed), Ἡρῴδης (Herod) τε (both) καὶ (and) Πόντιος (Pontius) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), σὺν (with) ἔθνεσιν (the Gentiles) καὶ (and) λαοῖς (peoples) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel),

³⁸ Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρέθ (Nazareth), ὡς (how) ἔχρισεν (anointed) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (with Holy) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (with power), ὃς (who) διῆλθεν (went about) εὐεργετῶν (doing good) καὶ (and) ἰώμενος (healing) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) καταδυναστευομένους (being oppressed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil), ὅτι (because) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹⁸ ἀνοῖξαι (to open) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦ (that) ἐπιστρέψαι (they may turn) ἀπὸ (from) σκότους (darkness) εἰς (to) φῶς (light), καὶ (and) τῆς (from the) ἐξουσίας (power) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), τοῦ (that) λαβεῖν (may receive) αὐτοὺς (they) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) καὶ (and) κλῆρον (an inheritance) ἐν (among) τοῖς (those) ἡγιασμένοις (having been sanctified) πίστει (by faith) τῇ (that is) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me).’

⁸ Ἦτε (You were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) σκότος (darkness); νῦν (now) δὲ (however), φῶς (light) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord); ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) φωτὸς (of light) περιπατεῖτε (walk)— ⁹ ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) φωτὸς (light is) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) ἀγαθωσύνῃ (goodness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth)— ¹⁰ δοκιμάζοντες (discerning) τί (what) ἐστιν (is) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συνκοινωνεῖτε (have fellowship with) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) τοῖς (-) ἀκάρποις (unfruitful) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness); μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (however) καὶ (even) ἐλέγχετε (expose them); ¹² τὰ (the things) γὰρ (for) κρυφῇ (in secret) γινόμενα (being done) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτῶν (them), αἰσχρόν (shameful) ἐστιν (it is) καὶ (even) λέγειν (to mention). ¹³ τὰ (-) δὲ (But) πάντα (everything) ἐλεγχόμενα (being exposed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) φωτὸς (light) φανεροῦται (is made visible), πᾶν (everything) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) φανερούμενον (becoming visible) φῶς (light) ἐστιν (is). ¹⁴ διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ἔγειρε (Awake you), ὁ (the one) καθεύδων (sleeping), καὶ (and) ἀνάστα (rise up) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) ἐπιφαύσει (will shine upon) σοι (you) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ).”

¹³ ὃς (who) ἐρρύσατο (has delivered) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ἐξουσίας (dominion) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness) καὶ (and) μετέστησεν (transferred us) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (beloved) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

⁵ πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you), υἱοὶ (sons) φωτός (of light) ἐστε (are), καὶ (and) υἱοὶ (sons) ἡμέρας (of day). Οὐκ (Not) ἐσμὲν (we are) νυκτὸς (of night) οὐδὲ (nor) σκότους (of darkness). ⁶ ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) μὴ (not) καθεύδωμεν (we should sleep) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) λοιποί (others), ἀλλὰ (but) γρηγορῶμεν (we should watch) καὶ (and) νήφωμεν (we should be sober).

⁵ Ἀκούσατε (Listen), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (my) ἀγαπητοί (beloved). οὐχ (Not) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐξελέξατο (has chosen) τοὺς (the) πτωχοὺς (poor) τῷ (-) κόσμῳ (in this world) πλουσίους (to be rich) ἐν (in) πίστει (faith) καὶ (and) κληρονόμους (heirs) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) ἧς (that) ἐπηγγείλατο (He promised) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) αὐτόν (Him)?

⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) γένος (are a race) ἐκλεκτόν (chosen), βασίλειον (a royal) ἱεράτευμα (priesthood), ἔθνος (a nation) ἅγιον (holy), λαὸς (a people) εἰς (for His) περιποίησιν (possession), ὅπως (so that) τὰς (the) ἀρετὰς (excellencies) ἐξαγγείλητε (you may proclaim) τοῦ (of the One) ἐκ (out of) σκότους (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καλέσαντος (having called), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) θαυμαστὸν (marvelous) αὐτοῦ (of Him) φῶς (light),

⁸ πάλιν (Again), ἐντολὴν (a commandment) καινὴν (new) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθὲς (true) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) σκοτία (darkness) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) τὸ (-) ἀληθινὸν (true) ἤδη (already) φαίνει (shines). ⁹ Ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) εἶναι (to be) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) μισῶν (hating), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) ἐστὶν (is) ἕως (even until) ἄρτι (now). ¹⁰ ὁ (The one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) σκάνδαλον (cause for stumbling) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).
