¹⁵ ἐθαύμαζον (Were marveling) οὖν (then) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), λέγοντες (saying), “Πῶς (How) οὗτος (this one) γράμματα (writings) οἶδεν (knows), μὴ (not) μεμαθηκώς (having studied)?”

²⁸ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (had finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ²⁹ ἦν (He was) γὰρ (for) διδάσκων (teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ὡς (as) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχων (having), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) αὐτῶν (of them).

⁵⁴ καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πατρίδα (region) αὐτοῦ (His own), ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) αὐτῶν (of them), ὥστε (so that) ἐκπλήσσεσθαι (are astonished) αὐτοὺς (they) καὶ (and) λέγειν (are saying), “Πόθεν (From where) τούτῳ (to this man) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) αὕτη (this) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miraculous powers)?

²² Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ἐθαύμασαν (they marveled); καὶ (and) ἀφέντες (having left) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπῆλθαν (they went away).

³³ Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

² καὶ (And) γενομένου (having come) σαββάτου (the Sabbath), ἤρξατο (He began) διδάσκειν (to teach) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue); καὶ (and) οἱ (-) πολλοὶ (many) ἀκούοντες (hearing) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished), λέγοντες (saying), “Πόθεν (From where) τούτῳ (to this man) ταῦτα (these things), καὶ (and) τίς (what is) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) ἡ (-) δοθεῖσα (having been given) τούτῳ (to Him), καὶ (even) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miracles), τοιαῦται (such) διὰ (by) τῶν (the) χειρῶν (hands) αὐτοῦ (of Him) γινόμεναι (are done)? ³ οὐχ (Not) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) τέκτων (carpenter), ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) τῆς (-) Μαρίας (of Mary), καὶ (and) ἀδελφὸς (brother) Ἰακώβου (of James) καὶ (and) Ἰωσῆτος (Joseph) καὶ (and) Ἰούδα (Judas) καὶ (and) Σίμωνος (Simon)? καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (are) αἱ (the) ἀδελφαὶ (sisters) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὧδε (here) πρὸς (with) ἡμᾶς (us)?” καὶ (And) ἐσκανδαλίζοντο (they took offense) ἐν (at) αὐτῷ (Him).

⁴⁷ ἐξίσταντο (Were amazed) δὲ (then) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀκούοντες (hearing) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) συνέσει (understanding) καὶ (and) ταῖς (the) ἀποκρίσεσιν (answers) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

²² Καὶ (And) πάντες (all) ἐμαρτύρουν (were bearing witness) αὐτῷ (to Him) καὶ (and) ἐθαύμαζον (marveling) ἐπὶ (at) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῖς (that) ἐκπορευομένοις (are proceeding) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying), “Οὐχὶ (Not) υἱός (the son) ἐστιν (is) Ἰωσὴφ (of Joseph) οὗτος (this)?”

¹⁹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Ἰωάννου (of John), ὅτε (when) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἐξ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem), ἱερεῖς (priests) καὶ (and) Λευίτας (Levites), ἵνα (that) ἐρωτήσωσιν (they might ask) αὐτόν (him), “Σὺ (You), τίς (who) εἶ (are)?”

⁴⁶ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) οὕτως (like this) ἄνθρωπος (a man), 〈ὡς (as) οὗτος (this) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος〉 (man).”

⁷ Ἐξίσταντο (They were amazed) δὲ (then) καὶ (and) ἐθαύμαζον (were marveling), λέγοντες (saying), “Οὐχ* (Not) ἰδοὺ (behold) πάντες (all) οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (who) λαλοῦντες (are speaking) Γαλιλαῖοι (Galileans)? ⁸ καὶ (And) πῶς (how) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀκούομεν (hear) ἕκαστος (each) τῇ (the) ἰδίᾳ (own) διαλέκτῳ (language) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἐγεννήθημεν (we were born)? ⁹ Πάρθοι (Parthians), καὶ (and) Μῆδοι (Medes), καὶ (and) Ἐλαμῖται* (Elamites); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) κατοικοῦντες (inhabiting) τὴν (-) Μεσοποταμίαν (Mesopotamia), Ἰουδαίαν (Judea) τε (also), καὶ (and) Καππαδοκίαν (Cappadocia), Πόντον (Pontus) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) Ἀσίαν (Asia); ¹⁰ Φρυγίαν (Phrygia) τε (both) καὶ (and) Παμφυλίαν (Pamphylia), Αἴγυπτον (Egypt) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) μέρη (parts) τῆς (-) Λιβύης (of Libya) τῆς (that) κατὰ (are around) Κυρήνην (Cyrene), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐπιδημοῦντες (visiting here) Ῥωμαῖοι (from Rome); ¹¹ Ἰουδαῖοί (Jews) τε (both) καὶ (and) προσήλυτοι (converts), Κρῆτες (Cretans) καὶ (and) Ἄραβες (Arabs)— ἀκούομεν (we hear) λαλούντων (speaking) αὐτῶν (them) ταῖς (-) ἡμετέραις (in our own) γλώσσαις (tongues) τὰ (the) μεγαλεῖα (great things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)!” ¹² Ἐξίσταντο (Were amazed) δὲ (then) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) διηπόρουν* (were perplexed), ἄλλος (other) πρὸς (to) ἄλλον (other) λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (What) θέλει (wishes) τοῦτο (this) εἶναι (to be)?” ¹³ Ἕτεροι (Others) δὲ (however) διαχλευάζοντες (mocking) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Γλεύκους (Of new wine) μεμεστωμένοι (full) εἰσίν (they are).”

¹¹ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ‘Ὁ (the) λίθος (stone) ὁ (-) ἐξουθενηθεὶς (having been rejected) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you), τῶν (the) οἰκοδόμων (builders), ὁ (which) γενόμενος (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (head) γωνίας (of the corner).’ ¹² Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἐν (in) ἄλλῳ (other) οὐδενὶ (no one) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation), οὐδὲ (not) γὰρ (for) ὄνομά (name) ἐστιν (is there) ἕτερον (another) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) τὸ (-) δεδομένον (having been given) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐν (by) ᾧ (which) δεῖ (it behooves) σωθῆναι (to be saved) ἡμᾶς (us).”

²⁴ Ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπολογουμένου (saying in his defense), ὁ (-) Φῆστος (Festus) μεγάλῃ (in a loud) τῇ (-) φωνῇ (voice) φησιν (said), “Μαίνῃ (You are insane), Παῦλε (Paul)! τὰ (The) πολλά (great) σε (of you) γράμματα (learning), εἰς (to) μανίαν (insanity) περιτρέπει (turns you)!”
