¹⁴ καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ὕψωσεν (lifted up) τὸν (the) ὄφιν (serpent) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), οὕτως (thus) ὑψωθῆναι (to be lifted up) δεῖ (it behooves) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man),

⁵⁴ πῶς (How) οὖν (then) πληρωθῶσιν (should be fulfilled) αἱ (the) γραφαὶ (Scriptures), ὅτι (that) οὕτως (so) δεῖ (it must) γενέσθαι (be)?”

³¹ Παραλαβὼν (Having taken aside) δὲ (then) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (Twelve), εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀναβαίνομεν (we go up) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) τελεσθήσεται (will be accomplished) πάντα (all things) τὰ (-) γεγραμμένα (having been written) διὰ (by) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (prophets) τῷ (about the) Υἱῷ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man). ³² παραδοθήσεται (He will be betrayed) γὰρ (for) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), καὶ (and) ἐμπαιχθήσεται (will be mocked), καὶ (and) ὑβρισθήσεται (will be insulted), καὶ (and) ἐμπτυσθήσεται (will be spit upon). ³³ καὶ (And) μαστιγώσαντες (having flogged Him), ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) αὐτόν (Him); καὶ (and) τῇ (on the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) τρίτῃ (third) ἀναστήσεται (He will rise again).”

²⁰ ὅπως (that) τε (then) παρέδωκαν (delivered up) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (to) κρίμα (the judgment) θανάτου (of death), καὶ (and) ἐσταύρωσαν (crucified) αὐτόν (Him).

²⁶ οὐχὶ (Not) ταῦτα (these things) ἔδει (was it necessary for) παθεῖν (to suffer) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) καὶ (and) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him)?” ²⁷ καὶ (And) ἀρξάμενος (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) Μωϋσέως (Moses) καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) προφητῶν (Prophets), διερμήνευσεν (He interpreted) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐν (in) πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) γραφαῖς (Scriptures) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) ἑαυτοῦ (Himself).

⁴⁴ Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (now) πρὸς (unto) αὐτούς (to them), “Οὗτοι (These are) οἱ (the) λόγοι (words) μου (of me), οὓς (which) ἐλάλησα (I spoke) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἔτι (still) ὢν (being) σὺν (with) ὑμῖν (you), ὅτι (that) δεῖ (it behooves) πληρωθῆναι (to be fulfilled) πάντα (all things) τὰ (-) γεγραμμένα (having been written) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) προφήταις (Prophets) καὶ (and) ψαλμοῖς (the Psalms) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me).” ⁴⁵ τότε (Then) διήνοιξεν (He opened) αὐτῶν (their) τὸν (-) νοῦν (mind) τοῦ (-) συνιέναι (to understand) τὰς (the) γραφάς (Scriptures). ⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὅτι (-), “Οὕτως (Thus) γέγραπται (it has been written): παθεῖν (Was to suffer) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ), καὶ (and) ἀναστῆναι (to rise) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day);

²⁸ εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) [αὐτοῖς] (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ὅταν (When) ὑψώσητε (you shall have lifted up) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), τότε (then) γνώσεσθε (you will know) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), καὶ (and) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμαυτοῦ (Myself) ποιῶ (I do) οὐδέν (nothing), ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (as) ἐδίδαξέν (taught) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ταῦτα (these things) λαλῶ (I speak).

³² κἀγὼ (And I), ἐὰν (if) ὑψωθῶ (I am lifted up) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), πάντας (all) ἑλκύσω (will draw) πρὸς (to) ἐμαυτόν (Myself).” ³³ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) ἔλεγεν (He was saying), σημαίνων (signifying) ποίῳ (by what) θανάτῳ (death) ἤμελλεν (He was about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die). ³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) οὖν (then) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd), “Ἡμεῖς (We) ἠκούσαμεν (have heard) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) πῶς (how) λέγεις (say) σὺ (you) ὅτι (that) δεῖ (it behooves) ὑψωθῆναι (to be lifted up) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man)? τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man)?”

²³ τοῦτον (Him) τῇ (by the) ὡρισμένῃ (determinate) βουλῇ (plan) καὶ (and) προγνώσει (foreknowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἔκδοτον (delivered up) διὰ (by) χειρὸς (hands) ἀνόμων (lawless), προσπήξαντες (having crucified), ἀνείλατε (You put to death),

²⁷ Συνήχθησαν (Were gathered together) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (in) ἀληθείας (truth), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (this), ἐπὶ (against) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) Παῖδά (servant) σου (of You) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ὃν (whom) ἔχρισας (You anointed), Ἡρῴδης (Herod) τε (both) καὶ (and) Πόντιος (Pontius) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), σὺν (with) ἔθνεσιν (the Gentiles) καὶ (and) λαοῖς (peoples) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), ²⁸ ποιῆσαι (to do) ὅσα (whatever) ἡ (the) χείρ (hand) σου (of You) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) βουλὴ (purpose) [σου] (of You) προώρισεν (had determined beforehand) γενέσθαι (to happen).
