²¹ Καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτόν (him), “Τί (What) οὖν (then)? σὺ (You) Ἠλίας (Elijah) εἶ (are)?” Καὶ (And) λέγει (he says), “Οὐκ (Not) εἰμί (I am).” “Ὁ (The) προφήτης (prophet) εἶ (are) σύ (you)?” Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθη (he answered), “Οὔ (No).”

⁹ ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (did you go out), προφήτην (a prophet) ἰδεῖν (to see)? ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and one) περισσότερον (more excellent) προφήτου (than a prophet). ¹⁰ οὗτός (For this) ἐστιν (is he) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) γέγραπται (it has been written): ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (messenger) μου (of Me) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (the face) σου (of You), Ὃς (who) κατασκευάσει (will prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way) σου (of You) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You).’ ¹¹ Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐκ (not) ἐγήγερται (there has risen) ἐν (among those) γεννητοῖς (born) γυναικῶν (of women) μείζων (one greater) Ἰωάννου (than John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist). ὁ (-) δὲ (Yet) μικρότερος (the least) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), μείζων (greater) αὐτοῦ (than he) ἐστιν (is).

¹⁴ καὶ (And) εἰ (if) θέλετε (you are willing) δέξασθαι (to receive it), αὐτός (he) ἐστιν (is) Ἠλίας (Elijah), ὁ (the one) μέλλων (being about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come).

¹⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Οἱ (Some) μὲν (indeed) Ἰωάννην (John) τὸν (the) Βαπτιστήν (Baptist); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now) Ἠλίαν (Elijah); ἕτεροι (others) δὲ (now) Ἰερεμίαν (Jeremiah), ἢ (or) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets).”

¹⁰ Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (Why) οὖν (then) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) λέγουσιν (say) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίαν (Elijah) δεῖ (it behooves) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρῶτον (first)?” ¹¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Ἠλίας (Elijah) μὲν (indeed) ἔρχεται (comes), καὶ (and) ἀποκαταστήσει (will restore) πάντα (all things). ¹² λέγω (I say) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἤδη (already) ἦλθεν (is come), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπέγνωσαν (they knew) αὐτὸν (him), ἀλλὰ* (but) ἐποίησαν (did) ἐν (to) αὐτῷ (him) ὅσα (whatever) ἠθέλησαν (they desired). οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) μέλλει (is about) πάσχειν (to suffer) ὑπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).”

¹⁷ καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (he) προελεύσεται (will go forth) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (the spirit) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (power) Ἠλίου (of Elijah), ἐπιστρέψαι (to turn) καρδίας (the hearts) πατέρων (of the fathers) ἐπὶ (to) τέκνα (the children), καὶ (and) ἀπειθεῖς (the disobedient) ἐν (to) φρονήσει (the wisdom) δικαίων (of the righteous), ἑτοιμάσαι (to make ready) Κυρίῳ (for the Lord) λαὸν (a people) κατεσκευασμένον (prepared).”

²⁵ καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Τί (Why) οὖν (then) βαπτίζεις (baptize you), εἰ (if) σὺ (you) οὐκ (not) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), οὐδὲ (nor) Ἠλίας (Elijah), οὐδὲ (nor) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet)?”

⁴⁰ Ἐκ (Some of) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) οὖν (therefore), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τῶν (the) λόγων (words) τούτων (these), ἔλεγον (were saying) “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ἀληθῶς (truly) ὁ (the) προφήτης (Prophet).”
