⁵² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), πᾶς (every) γραμματεὺς (scribe) μαθητευθεὶς (having been discipled) τῇ (into the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ὅμοιός (like) ἐστιν (is) ἀνθρώπῳ (a man), οἰκοδεσπότῃ (a master of a house), ὅστις (who) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) θησαυροῦ (treasure) αὐτοῦ (of him) καινὰ (things new) καὶ (and) παλαιά (old).”

²⁵ ἰδοὺ (Behold), προείρηκα (I have foretold it) ὑμῖν (to you).

⁴² Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the) πιστὸς (faithful) οἰκονόμος (manager) ὁ (and the) φρόνιμος (wise), ὃν (whom) καταστήσει (will set) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) ἐπὶ (over) τῆς (the) θεραπείας (care of servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), τοῦ (-) διδόναι (to give them) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (season) τὸ (the) σιτομέτριον (measure of food)?

¹⁰ Ὁ (The one) πιστὸς (faithful) ἐν (with) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little), καὶ (also) ἐν (with) πολλῷ (much) πιστός (faithful) ἐστιν (is); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἐν (with) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little) ἄδικος (unrighteous), καὶ (also) ἐν (with) πολλῷ (much) ἄδικός (unrighteous) ἐστιν (is). ¹¹ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀδίκῳ (unrighteous) μαμωνᾷ (wealth), πιστοὶ (faithful) οὐκ (not) ἐγένεσθε (you have been), τὸ (the) ἀληθινὸν (true riches) τίς (who) ὑμῖν (to you) πιστεύσει (will entrust)? ¹² καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἐν (in) τῷ (that which is) ἀλλοτρίῳ (of another), πιστοὶ (faithful) οὐκ (not) ἐγένεσθε (you have been), τὸ (that which) ὑμέτερον* (is yours) τίς (who) δώσει (will give) ὑμῖν (to you)?

² ὧδε (In this case) λοιπὸν (moreover), ζητεῖται (it is required) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οἰκονόμοις (stewards), ἵνα (that) πιστός (faithful) τις (one) εὑρεθῇ (shall be found).

⁷ καθὼς (just as) ἐμάθετε (you learned) ἀπὸ (from) Ἐπαφρᾶ (Epaphras), τοῦ (the) ἀγαπητοῦ (beloved) συνδούλου (fellow bond-servant) ἡμῶν (of us), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) πιστὸς (faithful) ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) ἡμῶν* (us), διάκονος (a servant) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

² δεῖ (It behooves) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνεπίλημπτον (above reproach) εἶναι (to be), μιᾶς (of one) γυναικὸς (wife) ἄνδρα (the husband), νηφάλιον (sober), σώφρονα (self-controlled), κόσμιον (respectable), φιλόξενον (hospitable), διδακτικόν (able to teach), ³ μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιεικῆ (gentle), ἄμαχον (peaceable), ἀφιλάργυρον (not loving money), ⁴ τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) οἴκου (house) καλῶς (well) προϊστάμενον (managing), τέκνα (children) ἔχοντα (having) ἐν (in) ὑποταγῇ (submission), μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) σεμνότητος (dignity) — ⁵ εἰ (if) δέ (but) τις (one) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) οἴκου (household) προστῆναι (to manage) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows), πῶς (how) ἐκκλησίας (the church) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπιμελήσεται (how will he care for)? — ⁶ μὴ (not) νεόφυτον (a novice), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) τυφωθεὶς (having been puffed up), εἰς (into) κρίμα (the judgment) ἐμπέσῃ (he might fall) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil). ⁷ δεῖ (It behooves him) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) μαρτυρίαν (a testimony) καλὴν (good) ἔχειν (to have) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (those) ἔξωθεν (outside), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (into) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) ἐμπέσῃ (he might fall), καὶ (and) παγίδα (the snare) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil). ⁸ Διακόνους (Deacons) ὡσαύτως (likewise) σεμνούς (must be dignified), μὴ (not) διλόγους (double-tongued), μὴ (not) οἴνῳ (to wine) πολλῷ (much) προσέχοντας (being given), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδεῖς (greedy of dishonest gain), ⁹ ἔχοντας (holding) τὸ (to the) μυστήριον (mystery) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) ἐν (with) καθαρᾷ (clear) συνειδήσει (a conscience).

⁶ Ταῦτα (These things) ὑποτιθέμενος (laying before) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers), καλὸς (good) ἔσῃ (you will be) διάκονος (a servant) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐντρεφόμενος (being nourished) τοῖς (in the) λόγοις (words) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) καλῆς (good) διδασκαλίας (teaching) ᾗ (that) παρηκολούθηκας (you have closely followed).

¹⁴ Μὴ (Not) ἀμέλει (be negligent) τοῦ (of the) ἐν (in) σοὶ (you) χαρίσματος (gift), ὃ (which) ἐδόθη (was given) σοι (to you) διὰ (through) προφητείας (prophecy), μετὰ (with) ἐπιθέσεως (the laying on) τῶν (of the) χειρῶν (hands) τοῦ (of the) πρεσβυτερίου (elderhood).

²² Χεῖρας (Hands) ταχέως (hastily) μηδενὶ (on no one) ἐπιτίθει (lay), μηδὲ (nor) κοινώνει (share) ἁμαρτίαις (in the sins) ἀλλοτρίαις (of others); σεαυτὸν (yourself) ἁγνὸν (pure) τήρει (keep).

¹² ἀγωνίζου (Fight) τὸν (the) καλὸν (good) ἀγῶνα (fight) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith). ἐπιλαβοῦ (Lay hold) τῆς (of the) αἰωνίου (eternal) ζωῆς (life), εἰς (to) ἣν (which) ἐκλήθης (you were called), καὶ (and also) ὡμολόγησας (did confess) τὴν (the) καλὴν (good) ὁμολογίαν (confession) ἐνώπιον (before) πολλῶν (many) μαρτύρων (witnesses).

¹³ Ὑποτύπωσιν (The pattern) ἔχε (retain) ὑγιαινόντων (of sound) λόγων (words), ὧν (which) παρ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) ἤκουσας (you did hear), ἐν (in) πίστει (the faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπῃ (love) τῇ (that are) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ¹⁴ τὴν (The) καλὴν (good) παραθήκην (deposit entrusted to you) φύλαξον (keep), διὰ (by) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), τοῦ (the One) ἐνοικοῦντος (dwelling) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us).

²⁴ δοῦλον (The bond-servant) δὲ (now) Κυρίου (of the Lord), οὐ (not) δεῖ (it behooves) μάχεσθαι (to quarrel), ἀλλὰ (but) ἤπιον (gentle) εἶναι (to be) πρὸς (toward) πάντας (all), διδακτικόν (able to teach), ἀνεξίκακον (forbearing), ²⁵ ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (gentleness) παιδεύοντα (disciplining) τοὺς (those) ἀντιδιατιθεμένους (opposing), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) δώῃ (may give) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) μετάνοιαν (repentance), εἰς (unto) ἐπίγνωσιν (a knowledge) ἀληθείας (of the truth),

⁵ Τούτου (Of this) χάριν (on account), ἀπέλιπόν (I left) σε (you) ἐν (in) Κρήτῃ (Crete), ἵνα (so that) τὰ (the things) λείποντα (lacking) ἐπιδιορθώσῃ (you might set in order), καὶ (and) καταστήσῃς (might appoint) κατὰ (in every) πόλιν (town) πρεσβυτέρους (elders), ὡς (as) ἐγώ (I) σοι (you) διεταξάμην (directed), ⁶ εἴ (if) τίς (anyone) ἐστιν (is) ἀνέγκλητος (blameless), μιᾶς (of one) γυναικὸς (wife) ἀνήρ (the husband), τέκνα (children) ἔχων (having) πιστά (believing), μὴ (not) ἐν (under) κατηγορίᾳ (accusation) ἀσωτίας (of debauchery), ἢ (or) ἀνυπότακτα (insubordinate). ⁷ Δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνέγκλητον (blameless) εἶναι (to be), ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκονόμον (steward); μὴ (not) αὐθάδη (self-willed), μὴ (not) ὀργίλον (quick tempered), μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδῆ (greedy of base gain), ⁸ ἀλλὰ (but) φιλόξενον (hospitable), φιλάγαθον (a lover of good), σώφρονα (self-controlled), δίκαιον (upright), ὅσιον (holy), ἐγκρατῆ (and disciplined); ⁹ ἀντεχόμενον (holding to) τοῦ (the) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) πιστοῦ (faithful) λόγου (word), ἵνα (that) δυνατὸς (able) ᾖ (he may be) καὶ (both) παρακαλεῖν (to encourage) ἐν (with) τῇ (-) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching) τῇ (-) ὑγιαινούσῃ (sound), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἀντιλέγοντας (contradicting it) ἐλέγχειν (to convict).

¹⁷ ὅθεν (Therefore) ὤφειλεν (it behooved Him) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things) τοῖς (His) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) ὁμοιωθῆναι (to be made like), ἵνα (so that) ἐλεήμων (a merciful) γένηται (He might become), καὶ (and) πιστὸς (faithful), ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) τὰ (in things) πρὸς (relating to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) ἱλάσκεσθαι (to make propitiation for) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people).

² πιστὸν (faithful) ὄντα (being) τῷ (to the One) ποιήσαντι (having appointed) αὐτὸν (Him), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ἐν (in) ὅλῳ (all) τῷ (the) οἴκῳ (house) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³ Πλείονος (Of greater) γὰρ (for) οὗτος (He) δόξης (glory) παρὰ (than) Μωϋσῆν (Moses) ἠξίωται (has been counted worthy), καθ’ (by) ὅσον (so much as) πλείονα (greater) τιμὴν (honor) ἔχει (has) τοῦ (than the) οἴκου (house itself), ὁ (the one) κατασκευάσας (having built) αὐτόν (it).

¹⁰ Μηδὲν* (Not) φοβοῦ (fear) ἃ (what) μέλλεις (you are about) πάσχειν (to suffer). ἰδοὺ (Behold), μέλλει (is about) βάλλειν (to cast) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἐξ (some of) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἵνα (so that) πειρασθῆτε (you might be tested); καὶ (and) ἕξετε (you shall have) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἡμερῶν (days) δέκα (ten). γίνου (Be) πιστὸς (faithful) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death), καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you) τὸν (the) στέφανον (crown) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life). ¹¹ Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) οὖς (an ear), ἀκουσάτω (let him hear) τί (what) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) λέγει (says) ταῖς (to the) ἐκκλησίαις (churches).
