¹⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) πολῖται (the citizens) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐμίσουν (hated) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) πρεσβείαν (a delegation) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτοῦ (him), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Οὐ (Not) θέλομεν (we are willing for) τοῦτον (this man) βασιλεῦσαι (to reign) ἐφ’ (over) ἡμᾶς (us).’

⁵ Ἔφη (Was saying) τε (then) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), “Οὐκ (Not) ᾔδειν (I was aware), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) ἐστὶν (he is) ἀρχιερεύς (high priest); γέγραπται (it has been written) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-): ‘Ἄρχοντα (The ruler) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) σου (of you), οὐκ (not) ἐρεῖς (you shall speak) κακῶς (evil of).’”

¹ Οὐδὲν (There is no) ἄρα (therefore) νῦν (now) κατάκριμα (condemnation) τοῖς (to those) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁴ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) δικαίωμα (righteousness) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law) πληρωθῇ (should be fulfilled) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) τοῖς (-) μὴ (not) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh) περιπατοῦσιν (walking), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) πνεῦμα (the Spirit). ⁵ Οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ὄντες (being), τὰ (the things) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) φρονοῦσιν (mind); οἱ (those) δὲ (however) κατὰ (according to) πνεῦμα (Spirit), τὰ (the things) τοῦ (of the) πνεύματος (Spirit).

¹² Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐσμέν (we are), οὐ (not) τῇ (to the) σαρκὶ (flesh), τοῦ (-) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆν (to live). ¹³ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆτε (you live), μέλλετε (you are about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die); εἰ (if) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (by the Spirit) τὰς (the) πράξεις (deeds) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) θανατοῦτε (you put to death), ζήσεσθε (you will live).

¹ Πᾶσα (Every) ψυχὴ (soul) ἐξουσίαις (to the authorities) ὑπερεχούσαις (being above him) ὑποτασσέσθω (let be subject). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἔστιν (there is) ἐξουσία (authority), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God); αἱ (those) δὲ (however) οὖσαι (existing), ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God) τεταγμέναι (having been instituted) εἰσίν (are). ² ὥστε (Therefore) ὁ (the one) ἀντιτασσόμενος (resisting) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority), τῇ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διαταγῇ (ordinance) ἀνθέστηκεν (has resisted); οἱ (those) δὲ (now) ἀνθεστηκότες (having resisted) ἑαυτοῖς (upon themselves) κρίμα (judgment) λήμψονται (will bring). ³ οἱ (The) γὰρ (for) ἄρχοντες (rulers) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (are) φόβος (a terror) τῷ (-) ἀγαθῷ (to good) ἔργῳ (works), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (-) κακῷ (to evil). θέλεις (Do you desire) δὲ (now) μὴ (not) φοβεῖσθαι (to fear) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority)? τὸ (The) ἀγαθὸν (good) ποίει (do), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) ἔπαινον (praise) ἐξ (from) αὐτῆς (him). ⁴ Θεοῦ (Of God) γὰρ (for) διάκονός (servant) ἐστιν (he is) σοὶ (to you) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἀγαθόν (good). ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) ποιῇς (you do), φοβοῦ (be afraid), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) εἰκῇ (in vain) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) φορεῖ (he bears); Θεοῦ (of God) γὰρ (for) διάκονός (a servant) ἐστιν (He is), ἔκδικος (an avenger) εἰς (for) ὀργὴν (wrath) τῷ (to the one) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) πράσσοντι (doing). ⁵ Διὸ (Therefore) ἀνάγκη (necessary it is) ὑποτάσσεσθαι (to be subject), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience).

⁹ Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἄδικοι (the unrighteous ones) Θεοῦ (of God) βασιλείαν (the kingdom) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit)? μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be deceived): οὔτε (neither) πόρνοι (the sexually immoral), οὔτε (nor) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), οὔτε (nor) μοιχοὶ (adulterers), οὔτε (nor) μαλακοὶ (effeminate), οὔτε (nor) ἀρσενοκοῖται (homosexuals),

³ Ἐν (In) σαρκὶ (flesh) γὰρ (for) περιπατοῦντες (walking), οὐ (not) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) στρατευόμεθα (do we wage war).

¹⁹ οἵτινες (who) ἀπηλγηκότες (having cast off all feeling), ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) παρέδωκαν (have given up) τῇ (to) ἀσελγείᾳ (sensuality), εἰς (for) ἐργασίαν (the working) ἀκαθαρσίας (of impurity), πάσης (all) ἐν (with) πλεονεξίᾳ (greediness).

⁵ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) ἴστε (you know), γινώσκοντες (realizing) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (any) πόρνος (fornicator), ἢ (or) ἀκάθαρτος (unclean person), ἢ (or) πλεονέκτης (covetous man), ὅ (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰδωλολάτρης (an idolater), οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), καὶ (and) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry),

⁷ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐκάλεσεν (has called) ἡμᾶς (us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπὶ (to) ἀκαθαρσίᾳ (impurity), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (into) ἁγιασμῷ (holiness).

⁷ Δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνέγκλητον (blameless) εἶναι (to be), ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκονόμον (steward); μὴ (not) αὐθάδη (self-willed), μὴ (not) ὀργίλον (quick tempered), μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδῆ (greedy of base gain),

⁴ Τίμιος (Honorable let) ὁ (-) γάμος (marriage be) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) κοίτη (marriage bed) ἀμίαντος (undefiled); πόρνους (the sexually immoral) γὰρ (for) καὶ (and) μοιχοὺς (adulterers) κρινεῖ (will judge) ὁ (-) Θεός (God).

¹³ Ὑποτάγητε (Be in subjection) πάσῃ (to every) ἀνθρωπίνῃ (human) κτίσει (institution) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), εἴτε (whether) βασιλεῖ (to the king) ὡς (as) ὑπερέχοντι (being supreme), ¹⁴ εἴτε (or) ἡγεμόσιν (to governors), ὡς (as) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) πεμπομένοις (being sent) εἰς (for) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) κακοποιῶν (to evildoers), ἔπαινον (praise) δὲ (then) ἀγαθοποιῶν (to well-doers),

³ τοῦτο (this) πρῶτον (first) γινώσκοντες (knowing), ὅτι (that) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπ’ (in) ἐσχάτων (the last) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐν (with) ἐμπαιγμονῇ (scoffing) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (-) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (evil desires) αὐτῶν (of them) πορευόμενοι (following)

⁴ παρεισέδυσαν* (Came in stealthily) γάρ (for) τινες (certain) ἄνθρωποι (men), οἱ (those) πάλαι (long ago) προγεγραμμένοι (having been designated) εἰς (unto) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) κρίμα (condemnation), ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly ones), τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us) χάριτα (grace) μετατιθέντες (changing) εἰς (into) ἀσέλγειαν (sensuality), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) μόνον (only) Δεσπότην (master) καὶ (and) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἀρνούμενοι (denying).

⁶ ἀγγέλους (The angels) τε (both) τοὺς (-) μὴ (not) τηρήσαντας (having kept) τὴν (own) ἑαυτῶν (their) ἀρχὴν (domain), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπολιπόντας (having left) τὸ (the) ἴδιον (own) οἰκητήριον (dwelling), εἰς (unto) κρίσιν (the judgment) μεγάλης (of the great) ἡμέρας (day), δεσμοῖς (in chains) ἀϊδίοις (eternal) ὑπὸ (under) ζόφον (darkness) τετήρηκεν (He keeps), ⁷ ὡς (just as) Σόδομα (Sodom) καὶ (and) Γόμορρα (Gomorrah) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) περὶ (around) αὐτὰς (them) πόλεις (cities), τὸν (-) ὅμοιον (in like) τρόπον (manner) τούτοις (with them) ἐκπορνεύσασαι (having indulged in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀπελθοῦσαι (having gone) ὀπίσω (after) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἑτέρας (strange), πρόκεινται (are set forth as) δεῖγμα (an example) πυρὸς (of fire) αἰωνίου (eternal) δίκην (the penalty) ὑπέχουσαι (undergoing). ⁸ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) μέντοι (yet) καὶ (also) οὗτοι (these) ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι (dreaming ones), σάρκα (the flesh) μὲν (indeed) μιαίνουσιν (defile), κυριότητα (authority) δὲ (then) ἀθετοῦσιν (set aside), δόξας (glorious ones) δὲ (and) βλασφημοῦσιν (blaspheme).

¹⁰ οὗτοι (These) δὲ (however), ὅσα (whatever things) μὲν (indeed) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (they have seen) βλασφημοῦσιν (they speak evil of); ὅσα (whatever things) δὲ (then) φυσικῶς (naturally), ὡς (as) τὰ (the) ἄλογα (irrational) ζῷα (animals), ἐπίστανται (they understand), ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) φθείρονται (they corrupt themselves).

¹⁶ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) γογγυσταί (grumblers), μεμψίμοιροι (discontented), κατὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (lusts) αὐτῶν (own) πορευόμενοι (following); καὶ (and) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτῶν (of them) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὑπέρογκα (great swelling words), θαυμάζοντες (flattering) πρόσωπα (faces) ὠφελείας (profit) χάριν (for the sake of).

¹⁸ ὅτι (that) ἔλεγον (they were saying) ὑμῖν (to you), “Ἐπ’ (In) ἐσχάτου (the last) τοῦ (-) χρόνου (time) ἔσονται (there will be) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (after) τὰς (-) ἑαυτῶν (their own) ἐπιθυμίας (passions) πορευόμενοι (following), τῶν (-) ἀσεβειῶν (of ungodlinesses).”
