³ Ἐγὼ (I) μὲν (indeed), γάρ (though) ἀπὼν (being absent) τῷ (-) σώματι (in body), παρὼν (being present) δὲ (now) τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit), ἤδη (already) κέκρικα (have judged) ὡς (as) παρὼν (being present) τὸν (the one) οὕτως (so) τοῦτο (this) κατεργασάμενον (having produced),

²³ Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however), μάρτυρα (as witness) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐπικαλοῦμαι (call) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (-) ἐμὴν (my) ψυχήν (soul), ὅτι (that) φειδόμενος (sparing) ὑμῶν (you), οὐκέτι (not yet) ἦλθον (have I come) εἰς (to) Κόρινθον (Corinth).

⁴ ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) πολλῆς (much) θλίψεως (affliction) καὶ (and) συνοχῆς (anguish) καρδίας (of heart) ἔγραψα (I wrote) ὑμῖν (to you) διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) δακρύων (tears), οὐχ (not) ἵνα (that) λυπηθῆτε (you might be grieved), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) ἵνα (that) γνῶτε (you might know) ἣν (that) ἔχω (I have) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you).

⁵ Καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) ἐλθόντων (having come) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (into) Μακεδονίαν (Macedonia), οὐδεμίαν (no) ἔσχηκεν (had) ἄνεσιν (rest) ἡ (the) σὰρξ (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us); ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every way) θλιβόμενοι (we are being pressed): ἔξωθεν (on the outside) μάχαι (conflicts), ἔσωθεν (within) φόβοι (fears). ⁶ ἀλλ’ (But) ὁ (the One) παρακαλῶν (comforting) τοὺς (the) ταπεινοὺς (downcast) παρεκάλεσεν (comforted) ἡμᾶς (us), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ἐν (by) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) Τίτου (of Titus), ⁷ οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δὲ (now) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) παρακλήσει (comfort) ᾗ (with which) παρεκλήθη (he was comforted) ἐφ’ (as to) ὑμῖν (you); ἀναγγέλλων (relating) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ἐπιπόθησιν (earnest desire), τὸν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ὀδυρμόν (mourning), τὸν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ζῆλον (zeal) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me), ὥστε (so as) με (for me) μᾶλλον (the more) χαρῆναι (to rejoice). ⁸ Ὅτι (For) εἰ (if) καὶ (also) ἐλύπησα (I have grieved) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐπιστολῇ (letter), οὐ (not) μεταμέλομαι (I do regret it). εἰ (Though) καὶ (even) μετεμελόμην (I did regret it); βλέπω (I see) [γὰρ] (indeed) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) ἐπιστολὴ (letter) ἐκείνη (that), εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πρὸς (for) ὥραν (an hour), ἐλύπησεν (grieved) ὑμᾶς (you).

²⁰ φοβοῦμαι (I fear) γὰρ (for) μή (lest) πως (perhaps), ἐλθὼν (having come), οὐχ (not) οἵους (such as) θέλω (I wish) εὕρω (I may find) ὑμᾶς (you), κἀγὼ (and I) εὑρεθῶ (might be found) ὑμῖν (by you) οἷον (such as) οὐ (not) θέλετε (you do wish); μή (lest) πως (perhaps) ἔρις (quarreling), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), καταλαλιαί (slander), ψιθυρισμοί (gossip), φυσιώσεις (conceit), ἀκαταστασίαι (disorder); ²¹ μὴ (lest) πάλιν (again) ἐλθόντος (having come) μου (of me), ταπεινώσῃ (should humble) με (me) ὁ (the) Θεός (God) μου (of me) πρὸς (as to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) πενθήσω (I should mourn over) πολλοὺς (many) τῶν (of those) προημαρτηκότων (having before sinned) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) μετανοησάντων (having repented) ἐπὶ (of) τῇ (the) ἀκαθαρσίᾳ (impurity) καὶ (and) πορνείᾳ (sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείᾳ (sensuality) ᾗ (that) ἔπραξαν (they have practiced).

¹⁰ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (therefore) ταῦτα (these things), ἀπὼν (being absent) γράφω (I write), ἵνα (so that) παρὼν (being present), μὴ (not) ἀποτόμως (with severity) χρήσωμαι (I should treat you), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἣν (that) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἔδωκέν (has given) μοι (me), εἰς (for) οἰκοδομὴν (building up) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἰς (for) καθαίρεσιν (tearing down).

¹² Ὅταν (When) πέμψω (I shall send) Ἀρτεμᾶν (Artemas) πρὸς (to) σὲ (you), ἢ (or) Τυχικόν (Tychicus), σπούδασον (be diligent) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρός (to) με (me) εἰς (into) Νικόπολιν (Nicopolis); ἐκεῖ (there) γὰρ (for) κέκρικα (I have decided) παραχειμάσαι (to winter).

¹⁵ χαίρειν (to rejoice) μετὰ (with the) χαιρόντων (rejoicing), κλαίειν (to weep) μετὰ (with the) κλαιόντων (weeping);

²⁶ καὶ (And) εἴτε (if) πάσχει (suffers) ἓν (one) μέλος (member), συμπάσχει (suffer with it) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) μέλη (members); εἴτε (if) δοξάζεται (is honored) [ἓν] (one) μέλος (member), συνχαίρει (rejoice with it) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) μέλη (members).

¹⁴ καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ἐπέγνωτε (you have understood) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part), ὅτι (so that) καύχημα (boasting) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐσμεν (we are), καθάπερ (even as) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you are) ἡμῶν (ours), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁸ Ὅτι (For) εἰ (if) καὶ (also) ἐλύπησα (I have grieved) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐπιστολῇ (letter), οὐ (not) μεταμέλομαι (I do regret it). εἰ (Though) καὶ (even) μετεμελόμην (I did regret it); βλέπω (I see) [γὰρ] (indeed) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) ἐπιστολὴ (letter) ἐκείνη (that), εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πρὸς (for) ὥραν (an hour), ἐλύπησεν (grieved) ὑμᾶς (you).

²⁹ τίς (Who) ἀσθενεῖ (is weak), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀσθενῶ (I am weak)? τίς (Who) σκανδαλίζεται (is led into sin), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) πυροῦμαι (do burn inwardly)?

²¹ τί (What) θέλετε (desire you)? ἐν (With) ῥάβδῳ (a rod) ἔλθω (I should come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἢ (or) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), πνεύματί (a spirit) τε (then) πραΰτητος (of gentleness)?

¹² ἄρα (So) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) ἔγραψα (I wrote) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐχ (it was not) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (the one) ἀδικήσαντος (having done wrong), οὐδὲ (nor) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (the one) ἀδικηθέντος (having suffered wrong), ἀλλ’ (but rather) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (-) φανερωθῆναι (being revealed) τὴν (the) σπουδὴν (earnestness) ὑμῶν (of you), τὴν (which is) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

²² Συνεπέμψαμεν (We sent with) δὲ (now) αὐτοῖς (them) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) ἡμῶν (of us), ὃν (whom) ἐδοκιμάσαμεν (we have proven) ἐν (in) πολλοῖς (many things) πολλάκις (often) σπουδαῖον (earnest) ὄντα (to be), νυνὶ (now) δὲ (however) πολὺ (much) σπουδαιότερον (earnest) πεποιθήσει (by his confidence) πολλῇ (more) τῇ (which is) εἰς (in) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹¹ Γέγονα (I have become) ἄφρων (a fool); ὑμεῖς (you) με (me) ἠναγκάσατε (compelled). ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ὤφειλον (ought) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you) συνίστασθαι (to have been commended). οὐδὲν (In no way) γὰρ (for) ὑστέρησα (was I inferior) τῶν (to those) “Ὑπερλίαν (most eminent) ἀποστόλων (apostles),” εἰ (though) καὶ (even) οὐδέν (nothing) εἰμι (I am).

²¹ μὴ (lest) πάλιν (again) ἐλθόντος (having come) μου (of me), ταπεινώσῃ (should humble) με (me) ὁ (the) Θεός (God) μου (of me) πρὸς (as to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) πενθήσω (I should mourn over) πολλοὺς (many) τῶν (of those) προημαρτηκότων (having before sinned) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) μετανοησάντων (having repented) ἐπὶ (of) τῇ (the) ἀκαθαρσίᾳ (impurity) καὶ (and) πορνείᾳ (sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείᾳ (sensuality) ᾗ (that) ἔπραξαν (they have practiced).

¹⁰ ἐγὼ (I) πέποιθα (am confident) εἰς (as to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), ὅτι (that) οὐδὲν (no) ἄλλο (other) φρονήσετε (mind will you have). ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) ταράσσων (troubling) ὑμᾶς (you) βαστάσει (will bear) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment), ὅστις (whoever) ἐὰν (if) ᾖ (he might be).

⁴ πεποίθαμεν (We are persuaded) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) ἐφ’ (as to) ὑμᾶς (you), ὅτι (that) ἃ (the things that) παραγγέλλομεν (we command), καὶ (both) ποιεῖτε (you are doing) καὶ (and) ποιήσετε (you will do).

²¹ Πεποιθὼς (Being persuaded of) τῇ (the) ὑπακοῇ (obedience) σου (of you), ἔγραψά (I write) σοι (to you), εἰδὼς (knowing) ὅτι (that) καὶ (even) ὑπὲρ (above) ἃ (what) λέγω (I say), ποιήσεις (you will do).

⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ὡς (as) ἤγγισεν (He drew near), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἔκλαυσεν (He wept) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτήν (it), ⁴² λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Εἰ (If) ἔγνως (you had known) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ταύτῃ (this), καὶ (even) σὺ (you), τὰ (the things) πρὸς (for) εἰρήνην (peace)! νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ἐκρύβη (they are hidden) ἀπὸ (from) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) σου (of you). ⁴³ ὅτι (For) ἥξουσιν (will come) ἡμέραι (days) ἐπὶ (upon) σὲ (you) καὶ (that) παρεμβαλοῦσιν (will cast around) οἱ (the) ἐχθροί (enemies) σου (of you) χάρακά (a barricade) σοι (you); καὶ (and) περικυκλώσουσίν (they will surround) σε (you) καὶ (and) συνέξουσίν (will hem in) σε (you) πάντοθεν (on every side), ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ἐδαφιοῦσίν (will level to the ground) σε (you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you) ἐν (within) σοί (you), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀφήσουσιν (will leave) λίθον (a stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (a stone) ἐν (within) σοί (you), ἀνθ’ (in place of) ὧν (which) οὐκ (not) ἔγνως (you knew) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (season) τῆς (the) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation) σου (of you).”

² ὅτι (that) λύπη (grief) μοί (to me) ἐστιν (is) μεγάλη (great), καὶ (and) ἀδιάλειπτος (unceasing) ὀδύνη (sorrow) τῇ (in the) καρδίᾳ (heart) μου (of me). ³ ηὐχόμην (Could wish) γὰρ (for) ἀνάθεμα (a curse) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I), ἀπὸ (separated from) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) μου (of me), τῶν (-) συγγενῶν (kinsmen) μου (of me), κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh);

⁸ Ὅτι (For) εἰ (if) καὶ (also) ἐλύπησα (I have grieved) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐπιστολῇ (letter), οὐ (not) μεταμέλομαι (I do regret it). εἰ (Though) καὶ (even) μετεμελόμην (I did regret it); βλέπω (I see) [γὰρ] (indeed) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) ἐπιστολὴ (letter) ἐκείνη (that), εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πρὸς (for) ὥραν (an hour), ἐλύπησεν (grieved) ὑμᾶς (you). ⁹ νῦν (Now) χαίρω (I rejoice), οὐχ (not) ὅτι (that) ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved) εἰς (unto) μετάνοιαν (repentance); ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) Θεόν (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (nothing) ζημιωθῆτε (you might suffer loss) ἐξ (through) ἡμῶν (us).

² ζηλῶ (I am jealous as to) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) Θεοῦ (of God) ζήλῳ (with the jealousy); ἡρμοσάμην (I have betrothed) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) ἑνὶ (to one) ἀνδρὶ (husband), παρθένον (a virgin) ἁγνὴν (pure) παραστῆσαι (to present) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (to Christ).

¹⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (now) ἥδιστα (most gladly) δαπανήσω (will spend), καὶ (and) ἐκδαπανηθήσομαι (will be utterly spent), ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you). εἰ (If) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγαπῶν* (loving), ἧσσον (less) ἀγαπῶμαι (I am loved)?

¹⁸ πολλοὶ (Many) γὰρ (for) περιπατοῦσιν (are walking) — οὓς (of whom) πολλάκις (often) ἔλεγον (I told) ὑμῖν (you), νῦν (now) δὲ (indeed) καὶ (even) κλαίων (weeping) λέγω (I say) — τοὺς (-) ἐχθροὺς (as enemies) τοῦ (of the) σταυροῦ (cross) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹ Ὅλως (Actually) ἀκούεται (is reported) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) πορνεία (sexual immorality), καὶ (and) τοιαύτη (such) πορνεία (sexual immorality) ἥτις (as) οὐδὲ (not even) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (pagans), ὥστε (so as for) γυναῖκά (the wife) τινα (one) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) ἔχειν (to have). ² καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you) πεφυσιωμένοι (puffed up) ἐστέ (are), καὶ (and) οὐχὶ (not) μᾶλλον (rather) ἐπενθήσατε (have mourned), ἵνα (so that) ἀρθῇ (might be taken) ἐκ (out of) μέσου (midst) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the one) τὸ (the) ἔργον (deed) τοῦτο (this) πράξας (having done)! ³ Ἐγὼ (I) μὲν (indeed), γάρ (though) ἀπὼν (being absent) τῷ (-) σώματι (in body), παρὼν (being present) δὲ (now) τῷ (-) πνεύματι (in spirit), ἤδη (already) κέκρικα (have judged) ὡς (as) παρὼν (being present) τὸν (the one) οὕτως (so) τοῦτο (this) κατεργασάμενον (having produced), ⁴ ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ‹ἡμῶν› (our) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) συναχθέντων (having been gathered together) ὑμῶν (you), καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) ἐμοῦ (of me) πνεύματος (in spirit), σὺν (with) τῇ (the) δυνάμει (power) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ⁵ παραδοῦναι (to deliver) τὸν (-) τοιοῦτον (such a one) τῷ (-) Σατανᾷ (to Satan) εἰς (for) ὄλεθρον (destruction) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) σωθῇ (may be saved) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord).

¹² Τί (What) γάρ (for) μοι (is it to me) τοὺς (those) ἔξω (outside) κρίνειν (to judge)? οὐχὶ (Not) τοὺς (those) ἔσω (within) ὑμεῖς (you) κρίνετε (do judge)? ¹³ τοὺς (Those) δὲ (however) ἔξω (outside) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) κρίνει (will judge). “Ἐξάρατε (Expel) τὸν (the) πονηρὸν (evil) ἐξ (out from) ὑμῶν (yourselves) αὐτῶν (that).”

¹² Γίνεσθε (Become) ὡς (as) ἐγώ (I am), ὅτι (because) κἀγὼ (I also have become) ὡς (as) ὑμεῖς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), δέομαι (I implore) ὑμῶν (you). οὐδέν (In nothing) με (me) ἠδικήσατε (have You wronged).

¹¹ Ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for), αὐτὸ (this very) τοῦτο (same) τὸ (thing), κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) λυπηθῆναι (to have been grieved), πόσην (how much) κατειργάσατο (has produced) ὑμῖν (in you) σπουδήν (earnestness), ἀλλὰ (but instead) ἀπολογίαν (reasoned defense), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀγανάκτησιν (indignation), ἀλλὰ (but) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιπόθησιν (longing), ἀλλὰ (but) ζῆλον (zeal), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκδίκησιν (vindication)! ἐν (In) παντὶ (everything), συνεστήσατε (you have proved) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἁγνοὺς (innocent) εἶναι (to be) τῷ (in this) πράγματι (matter).

²⁰ Τοὺς (Those) (δὲ) (however) ἁμαρτάνοντας (sinning) ἐνώπιον (before), πάντων (all) ἔλεγχε (rebuke), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest), φόβον (fear) ἔχωσιν (might have).

⁵⁴ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) φθαρτὸν (perishable) τοῦτο (this) ἐνδύσηται (shall have put on) (τὴν) (the) ἀφθαρσίαν (imperishable), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) θνητὸν (mortal) τοῦτο (this) ἐνδύσηται (shall have put on) ἀθανασίαν (immortality), τότε (then) γενήσεται (will come to pass) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὁ (-) γεγραμμένος (having been written): “Κατεπόθη (Has been swallowed up) ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) εἰς (in) νῖκος (victory).”

⁴ καὶ (And) γὰρ (for), οἱ (-) ὄντες (being) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σκήνει (tent), στενάζομεν (we groan), βαρούμενοι (being burdened), ἐφ’ (because) ᾧ (that) οὐ (not) θέλομεν (we do wish) ἐκδύσασθαι (to be unclothed) ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπενδύσασθαι (to be clothed), ἵνα (that) καταποθῇ (may be swallowed up) τὸ (the) θνητὸν (mortal) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (life).

¹⁰ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for), κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) λύπη (grief), μετάνοιαν (repentance) εἰς (to) σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἀμεταμέλητον (without regret) ἐργάζεται (produces); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) τοῦ (the of the) κόσμου (world) λύπη (grief), θάνατον (death) κατεργάζεται (produces).

¹ Ἀδελφοί (Brothers), ἐὰν (if) καὶ (even) προλημφθῇ (should be overcome) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔν (in) τινι (some) παραπτώματι (trespass), ὑμεῖς (you), οἱ (the) πνευματικοὶ (spiritual ones), καταρτίζετε (restore) τὸν (-) τοιοῦτον (such a one) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (a spirit) πραΰτητος (of gentleness), σκοπῶν (considering) σεαυτόν (yourself), μὴ (lest) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) πειρασθῇς (be tempted). ² Ἀλλήλων (One another’s) τὰ (-) βάρη (burdens) βαστάζετε (bear you), καὶ (and) οὕτως (thus) ἀναπληρώσετε (you shall fulfill) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

³² γίνεσθε (Be) δὲ (now) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) χρηστοί (kind), εὔσπλαγχνοι (tender-hearted), χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) ἑαυτοῖς (each other), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐχαρίσατο (forgave) ὑμῖν (you).

²⁷ καὶ (And) γὰρ (indeed) ἠσθένησεν (he was sick) παραπλήσιον (nearly) θανάτῳ (unto death), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἠλέησεν (had mercy on) αὐτόν (him); οὐκ (not) αὐτὸν (on him) δὲ (now) μόνον (alone), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐμέ (on me), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) λύπην (sorrow) ἐπὶ (upon) λύπην (sorrow) σχῶ (I should have).

¹³ ἀνεχόμενοι (bearing with) ἀλλήλων (each other) καὶ (and) χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) ἑαυτοῖς (each other). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) πρός (against) τινα (another) ἔχῃ (should have) μομφήν (a complaint), καθὼς (even as) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐχαρίσατο (has forgiven) ὑμῖν (you), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you).

¹³ Οὐ (Not) θέλομεν (we do want) δὲ (but) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), περὶ (concerning) τῶν (those) κοιμωμένων (having fallen asleep), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) λυπῆσθε (you should be grieved), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest), οἱ (those) μὴ (not) ἔχοντες (having) ἐλπίδα (hope).

⁶ Παραγγέλλομεν (We command) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), στέλλεσθαι (are to withdraw) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀπὸ (from) παντὸς (every) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) ἀτάκτως (idly) περιπατοῦντος (walking) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ἣν (that) παρελάβοσαν* (you received) παρ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us).

¹⁴ Εἰ (If) δέ (then) τις (anyone) οὐχ (not) ὑπακούει (obey) τῷ (this) λόγῳ (instruction) ἡμῶν (of us) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐπιστολῆς (letter), τοῦτον (of this man) σημειοῦσθε (take note) μὴ (not) συναναμίγνυσθαι (to mix with) αὐτῷ (him), ἵνα (so that) ἐντραπῇ (he may be ashamed). ¹⁵ καὶ (And yet) μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐχθρὸν (an enemy) ἡγεῖσθε (esteem him), ἀλλὰ (but) νουθετεῖτε (admonish him) ὡς (as) ἀδελφόν (a brother).

¹² Διὸ (Therefore) τὰς (the) παρειμένας (drooping) χεῖρας (hands) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) παραλελυμένα (enfeebled) γόνατα (knees) ἀνορθώσατε (lift up), ¹³ καὶ (and) τροχιὰς (paths) ὀρθὰς (straight) ποιεῖτε (make) τοῖς (for the) ποσὶν (feet) ὑμῶν (of you), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) χωλὸν (lame) ἐκτραπῇ (should be put out of joint), ἰαθῇ (should be healed) δὲ (however) μᾶλλον (rather). ¹⁴ Εἰρήνην (Peace) διώκετε (pursue) μετὰ (with) πάντων (all), καὶ (and) τὸν (-) ἁγιασμόν (holiness), οὗ (which) χωρὶς (without) οὐδεὶς (no one) ὄψεται (will see) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), ¹⁵ ἐπισκοποῦντες (observing) μή (lest) τις (any) ὑστερῶν (be failing) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), μή (lest) τις (any) ῥίζα (root) πικρίας (of bitterness) ἄνω (up) φύουσα (springing) ἐνοχλῇ (should trouble you), καὶ (and) δι’* (by) αὐτῆς* (this), μιανθῶσιν (might be defiled) 〈οἱ〉 (the) πολλοί (many),

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

¹⁰ Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ὡς (as) καιρὸν (occasion) ἔχομεν* (we have), ἐργαζώμεθα (we should work) τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) πρὸς (toward) πάντας (all), μάλιστα (especially) δὲ (now) πρὸς (toward) τοὺς (those) οἰκείους (of the household) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (of faith).

²² Καὶ (And) οὓς (those who) μὲν (indeed) ἐλεᾶτε (have mercy on), διακρινομένους (are doubting); ²³ ‹οὓς (others) δὲ› (also) σῴζετε (save), ἐκ (out of) πυρὸς (the fire) ἁρπάζοντες (snatching); οὓς (to others) δὲ (then) ἐλεᾶτε (show mercy) ἐν (with) φόβῳ (fear), μισοῦντες (hating) καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀπὸ (by) τῆς (the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἐσπιλωμένον (having been stained) χιτῶνα (clothing).

¹² ἄρα (So) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) ἔγραψα (I wrote) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐχ (it was not) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (the one) ἀδικήσαντος (having done wrong), οὐδὲ (nor) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (the one) ἀδικηθέντος (having suffered wrong), ἀλλ’ (but rather) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (-) φανερωθῆναι (being revealed) τὴν (the) σπουδὴν (earnestness) ὑμῶν (of you), τὴν (which is) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God). ¹³ διὰ (On account of) τοῦτο (this), παρακεκλήμεθα (we have been comforted). Ἐπὶ (Besides) δὲ (now) τῇ (the) παρακλήσει (comfort) ἡμῶν (of us), περισσοτέρως (the more abundantly) μᾶλλον (rather) ἐχάρημεν (we have rejoiced) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) χαρᾷ (joy) Τίτου (of Titus), ὅτι (because) ἀναπέπαυται (has been refreshed) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπὸ (by) πάντων (all) ὑμῶν (of you). ¹⁴ ὅτι (For) εἴ (if) τι (anything) αὐτῷ (to him) ὑπὲρ (about) ὑμῶν (you) κεκαύχημαι (I have boasted), οὐ (not) κατῃσχύνθην (I was put to shame); ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) πάντα (all things) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) ἐλαλήσαμεν (we have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) καύχησις (boasting) ἡμῶν (of us) ‹ἡ› (-) ἐπὶ (to) Τίτου (Titus), ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐγενήθη (became). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (affections) αὐτοῦ (of him) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐστιν (are), ἀναμιμνῃσκομένου (remembering) τὴν (the) πάντων (of all) ὑμῶν (of you) ὑπακοήν (obedience), ὡς (how) μετὰ (with) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) τρόμου (trembling) ἐδέξασθε (you received) αὐτόν (him).

²⁴ τὴν (-) οὖν (Therefore) ἔνδειξιν (the proof) τῆς (of the) ἀγάπης (love) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) ἡμῶν (of our) καυχήσεως (boasting) ὑπὲρ (about) ὑμῶν (you), εἰς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐνδεικνύμενοι (show) εἰς (in) πρόσωπον (face) τῶν (of the) ἐκκλησιῶν (churches).

⁶ καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἑτοίμῳ (readiness) ἔχοντες (having), ἐκδικῆσαι (to avenge) πᾶσαν (all) παρακοήν (disobedience), ὅταν (when) πληρωθῇ (might have been fulfilled) ὑμῶν (your) ἡ (-) ὑπακοή (obedience).

¹² Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved) μου (of me), καθὼς (just as) πάντοτε (always) ὑπηκούσατε (you have obeyed), μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (presence) μου (of me) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) νῦν (now) πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπουσίᾳ (absence) μου (of me), μετὰ (with) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) τρόμου (trembling) τὴν (-) ἑαυτῶν (your own) σωτηρίαν (salvation) κατεργάζεσθε (work out).

²² τὴν (-) δὲ (But) δοκιμὴν (the proven worth) αὐτοῦ (of him) γινώσκετε (you know), ὅτι (that) ὡς (as) πατρὶ (a father with) τέκνον (a child), σὺν (with) ἐμοὶ (me) ἐδούλευσεν (he has served) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel).

¹⁴ Εἰ (If) δέ (then) τις (anyone) οὐχ (not) ὑπακούει (obey) τῷ (this) λόγῳ (instruction) ἡμῶν (of us) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐπιστολῆς (letter), τοῦτον (of this man) σημειοῦσθε (take note) μὴ (not) συναναμίγνυσθαι (to mix with) αὐτῷ (him), ἵνα (so that) ἐντραπῇ (he may be ashamed).

¹⁸ Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) δήσητε (you shall bind) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (shall have been) δεδεμένα (bound) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven); καὶ (and) ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) λύσητε (you shall loose) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (shall have been) λελυμένα (loosed) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven).

²³ ἄν (If) τινων (of any), ἀφῆτε (you might forgive) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins), ἀφέωνται (they are forgiven) αὐτοῖς (them); ἄν (If) τινων (any) κρατῆτε (you might retain), κεκράτηνται (they are retained).”

²⁵ λαβεῖν (to take) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τῆς (of the) διακονίας (ministry) ταύτης (this) καὶ (and) ἀποστολῆς (apostleship), ἀφ’ (from) ἧς (which) παρέβη (turned aside) Ἰούδας (Judas) πορευθῆναι (to go) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τὸν (-) ἴδιον (own).”

⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀποστερεῖτε (deprive) ἀλλήλους (one another), εἰ (if) μήτι (not) ἂν (-) ἐκ (by) συμφώνου (mutual agreement), πρὸς (for) καιρὸν (a time), ἵνα (that) σχολάσητε (you might be at leisure) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (for prayer); καὶ (and) πάλιν (again), ἐπὶ (together) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) ἦτε (be), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) πειράζῃ (may tempt) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), διὰ (through) τὴν (the) ἀκρασίαν (lack of self-control) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

³ Φοβοῦμαι (I am afraid) δὲ (however), μή (lest) πως (by any means) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ἐξηπάτησεν (deceived) Εὕαν (Eve) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) αὐτοῦ (of him), φθαρῇ (might be corrupted) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἁπλότητος (simplicity) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἁγνότητος (purity) τῆς (-) εἰς (in) ‹τὸν› (-) Χριστόν (Christ).

¹⁴ καὶ (And) οὐ (no) θαῦμα (wonder); αὐτὸς (himself) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) μετασχηματίζεται (masquerades) εἰς (as) ἄγγελον (an angel) φωτός (of light).

¹¹ ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πρὸς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑμᾶς (you) στῆναι (to stand) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) μεθοδείας (schemes) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil), ¹² ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡμῖν (to us) ἡ (the) πάλη (wrestling) πρὸς (against) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) σάρκα (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἀρχάς (rulers), πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), πρὸς (against) τοὺς (the) κοσμοκράτορας (cosmic powers) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness) τούτου (this), πρὸς (against) τὰ (the) πνευματικὰ (spiritual forces) τῆς (-) πονηρίας (of evil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms).

²⁵ ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (gentleness) παιδεύοντα (disciplining) τοὺς (those) ἀντιδιατιθεμένους (opposing), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) δώῃ (may give) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) μετάνοιαν (repentance), εἰς (unto) ἐπίγνωσιν (a knowledge) ἀληθείας (of the truth),

⁸ Νήψατε (Be sober-minded); γρηγορήσατε (watch). ὁ (The) ἀντίδικος (adversary) ὑμῶν (of You), διάβολος (the devil), ὡς (as) λέων (a lion) ὠρυόμενος (roaring) περιπατεῖ (prowls about), ζητῶν (seeking) τινα (whom) καταπιεῖν (to devour),

²⁴ Ὑμῖν (To you) δὲ (however) λέγω (I say), τοῖς (to the) λοιποῖς (rest) τοῖς (of those) ἐν (in) Θυατείροις (Thyatira), ὅσοι (as many as) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (have) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) ταύτην (this), οἵτινες (who) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (have known) τὰ (the) βαθέα (depths) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan), ὡς (as) λέγουσιν (they say): οὐ (Not) βάλλω (I will cast) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἄλλο (any other) βάρος (burden).

⁹ καὶ (And) ἐβλήθη (was thrown out) ὁ (the) δράκων (dragon) ὁ (-) μέγας (great), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὁ (who) καλούμενος (is called) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ὁ (-) πλανῶν (deceiving) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (inhabited world) ὅλην (whole). ἐβλήθη (He was thrown down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐβλήθησαν (were thrown down). ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) ἤκουσα (I heard) φωνὴν (a voice) μεγάλην (great) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven), λέγουσαν (saying): “Ἄρτι (Now) ἐγένετο (have come) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) δύναμις (power), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐξουσία (authority) τοῦ (the) Χριστοῦ (Christ) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὅτι (because) ἐβλήθη (has been thrown down) ὁ (the) κατήγωρ (accuser) τῶν (of the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) ἡμῶν (of us), ὁ (the one) κατηγορῶν (accusing) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us) ἡμέρας (day) καὶ (and) νυκτός (night). ¹¹ καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐνίκησαν (have overcome) αὐτὸν (him) διὰ (by reason) τὸ (of the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), καὶ (and) διὰ (by reason of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) μαρτυρίας (testimony) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠγάπησαν (they have loved) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτῶν (of them) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death).

²⁷ Παραγενόμενοι (Having arrived) δὲ (now) καὶ (and) συναγαγόντες (having gathered together) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church), ἀνήγγελλον (they began declaring) ὅσα (all that) ἐποίησεν (had done) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) ἤνοιξεν (He had opened) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) θύραν (a door) πίστεως (of faith).

⁸ παρελθόντες (having passed by) δὲ (then) τὴν (-) Μυσίαν (Mysia), κατέβησαν (they came down) εἰς (to) Τρῳάδα (Troas).

¹ Μετὰ (After) δὲ (now) τὸ (-) παύσασθαι (had ceased) τὸν (the) θόρυβον (uproar), μεταπεμψάμενος (having called to him) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) καὶ (and) παρακαλέσας (having encouraged), ἀσπασάμενος (having said farewell), ἐξῆλθεν (he departed) πορεύεσθαι (to go) εἰς (to) Μακεδονίαν (Macedonia). ² διελθὼν (Having passed through) δὲ (then) τὰ (the) μέρη (districts) ἐκεῖνα (those), καὶ (and) παρακαλέσας (having exhorted) αὐτοὺς (them) λόγῳ (with talk) πολλῷ (much), ἦλθεν (he came) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Ἑλλάδα (Greece). ³ ποιήσας (Having continued) τε (then) μῆνας (months) τρεῖς (three), γενομένης (having been made) ἐπιβουλῆς (a plot) αὐτῷ (against him) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), μέλλοντι (he being about) ἀνάγεσθαι (to sail) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) Συρίαν (Syria), ἐγένετο (arose) γνώμης (a purpose) τοῦ (-) ὑποστρέφειν (to return) διὰ (through) Μακεδονίας (Macedonia). ⁴ Συνείπετο (Was accompanied by) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (he) Σώπατρος (Sopater) Πύρρου (Pyrrhus), Βεροιαῖος (a Berean); Θεσσαλονικέων (of the Thessalonians) δὲ (now), Ἀρίσταρχος (Aristarchus) καὶ (and) Σεκοῦνδος (Secundus); καὶ (and) Γάϊος (Gaius) Δερβαῖος (of Derbe) καὶ (and) Τιμόθεος (Timothy); Ἀσιανοὶ (the Asians) δὲ (now), Τυχικὸς (Tychicus) καὶ (and) Τρόφιμος (Trophimus). ⁵ οὗτοι (These) δὲ (also) προελθόντες (having gone ahead), ἔμενον (waited for) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) Τρῳάδι (Troas). ⁶ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (then) ἐξεπλεύσαμεν (sailed away) μετὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) τῶν (of the) ἀζύμων (Unleavened Bread), ἀπὸ (from) Φιλίππων (Philippi), καὶ (and) ἤλθομεν (we came) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (at) τὴν (-) Τρῳάδα (Troas) ἄχρι (within) ἡμερῶν (days) πέντε (five), ὅπου (where) διετρίψαμεν (we stayed) ἡμέρας (days) ἑπτά (seven).

⁸ Ἦσαν (There were) δὲ (now) λαμπάδες (lamps) ἱκαναὶ (many) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὑπερῴῳ (upper room) οὗ (where) ἦμεν (we were) συνηγμένοι (assembled).

³ προσευχόμενοι (praying) ἅμα (at the same time) καὶ (also) περὶ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀνοίξῃ (may open) ἡμῖν (to us) θύραν (a door) τοῦ (for the) λόγου (word), λαλῆσαι (to declare) τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), δι’ (on account of) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) δέδεμαι (I have been bound),

¹³ διὰ (On account of) τοῦτο (this), παρακεκλήμεθα (we have been comforted). Ἐπὶ (Besides) δὲ (now) τῇ (the) παρακλήσει (comfort) ἡμῶν (of us), περισσοτέρως (the more abundantly) μᾶλλον (rather) ἐχάρημεν (we have rejoiced) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) χαρᾷ (joy) Τίτου (of Titus), ὅτι (because) ἀναπέπαυται (has been refreshed) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπὸ (by) πάντων (all) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁶ Εἰς (Accordingly) τὸ (-) παρακαλέσαι (exhorted) ἡμᾶς (we) Τίτον (Titus), ἵνα (that) καθὼς (as) προενήρξατο (he had begun), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἐπιτελέσῃ (he might complete) εἰς (with) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (as well), τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) ταύτην (this).

¹⁶ Χάρις (Thanks) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), τῷ (the One) διδόντι (putting) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) σπουδὴν (earnestness) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) Τίτου (of Titus).

²³ εἴτε (Whether) ὑπὲρ (as regards) Τίτου (Titus), κοινωνὸς (he is partner) ἐμὸς (my) καὶ (and) εἰς (for) ὑμᾶς (you) συνεργός (a fellow worker); εἴτε (or) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) ἡμῶν (our), ἀπόστολοι (they are apostles) ἐκκλησιῶν (of the churches), δόξα (the glory) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

¹⁸ παρεκάλεσα (I urged) Τίτον (Titus to go), καὶ (and) συναπέστειλα (sent with him) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother). μήτι (Not) ἐπλεονέκτησεν (did exploit) ὑμᾶς (you) Τίτος (Titus)? οὐ (Not) τῷ (in the) αὐτῷ (same) Πνεύματι (spirit) περιεπατήσαμεν (did we walk)? οὐ (Not) τοῖς (in the) αὐτοῖς (same) ἴχνεσιν (steps)?

¹ Ἔπειτα (Then) διὰ (after) δεκατεσσάρων (fourteen) ἐτῶν (years) πάλιν (again) ἀνέβην (I went up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) μετὰ (with) Βαρνάβα (Barnabas), συμπαραλαβὼν (having taken with me) καὶ (also) Τίτον (Titus).

³ ἀλλ’ (But) οὐδὲ (not even) Τίτος (Titus) ὁ (who was) σὺν (with) ἐμοί (me), Ἕλλην (a Greek) ὤν (being), ἠναγκάσθη (was compelled) περιτμηθῆναι (to be circumcised),

¹⁰ Δημᾶς (Demas) γάρ (for) με (me) ἐγκατέλιπεν (has deserted), ἀγαπήσας (having loved) τὸν (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) ἐπορεύθη (he has gone) εἰς (to) Θεσσαλονίκην (Thessalonica), Κρήσκης (Crescens) εἰς (to) Γαλατίαν (Galatia), Τίτος (and Titus) εἰς (to) Δαλματίαν (Dalmatia).

⁴ Τίτῳ (To Titus), γνησίῳ (my true) τέκνῳ (child) κατὰ (according to) κοινὴν (our common) πίστιν (faith): Χάρις (Grace) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) καὶ (and) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹⁷ χάρις (Thanks be) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ὅτι (that) ἦτε (you used to be) δοῦλοι (slaves) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), ὑπηκούσατε (you have become obedient) δὲ (now) ἐκ (from the) καρδίας (heart), εἰς (to) ὃν (which) παρεδόθητε (you were handed over) τύπον (to the form) διδαχῆς (of teaching).

³⁷ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) πᾶσιν (all), ὑπερνικῶμεν (we more than conquer) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντος (having loved) ἡμᾶς (us).

¹⁹ ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) σημείων (of signs) καὶ (and) τεράτων (wonders), ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) [θεοῦ] (of God); ὥστε (so as) με (for me) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) κύκλῳ (around) μέχρι (unto) τοῦ (-) Ἰλλυρικοῦ (Illyricum), πεπληρωκέναι (to have fully proclaimed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

³⁷ καὶ (And) ὃ (what) σπείρεις (you sow), οὐ (not) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) τὸ (that) γενησόμενον (will be) σπείρεις (you sow), ἀλλὰ (but) γυμνὸν (a bare) κόκκον (grain), εἰ (if) τύχοι (it may be) σίτου (of wheat), ἤ (or) τινος (of some) τῶν (of the) λοιπῶν (rest).

¹⁰ χάριτι (By the grace) δὲ (however) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰμι (I am) ὅ (what) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἡ (-) εἰς (toward) ἐμὲ (me) οὐ (not) κενὴ (void) ἐγενήθη (has been). ἀλλὰ (Rather), περισσότερον (more abundantly) αὐτῶν (than them) πάντων (all) ἐκοπίασα (I toiled), οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ‹ἡ› (that was) σὺν (with) ἐμοί (me).

⁵ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτῶν (ourselves) ἱκανοί (sufficient) ἐσμεν (we are) λογίσασθαί (to reckon) τι (anything) ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἑαυτῶν (ourselves), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (the) ἱκανότης (sufficiency) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐκ (is of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (also) ἱκάνωσεν (has made competent) ἡμᾶς (us as) διακόνους (ministers) καινῆς (of a new) διαθήκης (covenant), οὐ (not) γράμματος (of the letter) ἀλλὰ (but) πνεύματος (of the Spirit); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) γράμμα (letter) ἀποκτέννει* (kills), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ζωοποιεῖ (gives life).

⁷ Ὑμῖν (To you) οὖν (therefore is) ἡ (the) τιμὴ (preciousness), τοῖς (-) πιστεύουσιν (believing); ἀπιστοῦσιν (to those disobeying), δὲ (however), “Λίθος (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (have rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (the head) γωνίας (of the corner),” ⁸ Καὶ (and), “Λίθος (A stone) προσκόμματος (of stumbling) καὶ (and) πέτρα (a rock) σκανδάλου (of offense).” Οἳ (They) προσκόπτουσιν (stumble at), τῷ (to the) λόγῳ (word) ἀπειθοῦντες (being disobedient), εἰς (to) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐτέθησαν (they were appointed).

²⁴ ἐγερθήσονται (There will arise) γὰρ (for) ψευδόχριστοι (false Christs) καὶ (and) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets), καὶ (and) δώσουσιν (they will give) σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great), καὶ (and) τέρατα (wonders), ὥστε (so as) πλανῆσαι (to mislead), εἰ (if) δυνατὸν (possible), καὶ (even) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect).

²⁰ ὡς (how) οὐδὲν (nothing) ὑπεστειλάμην (I did shrink back) τῶν (of that) συμφερόντων (being profitable), τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) ἀναγγεῖλαι (to declare) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and) διδάξαι (to teach) ὑμᾶς (you) δημοσίᾳ (publicly) καὶ (and) κατ’ (from) οἴκους (house to house),

²⁷ οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ὑπεστειλάμην (I shrunk back) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) ἀναγγεῖλαι (from declaring) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) βουλὴν (counsel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑμῖν (to you).

⁸ ὥστε (so that) ἑορτάζωμεν (we might celebrate the feast), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) ζύμῃ (leaven) παλαιᾷ (old), μηδὲ (not) ἐν (with) ζύμῃ (leaven) κακίας (of malice) καὶ (and) πονηρίας (wickedness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (with) ἀζύμοις (unleavened bread) εἰλικρινείας (of sincerity) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (of truth).

² ἀλλὰ (But) ἀπειπάμεθα (we have renounced) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τῆς (-) αἰσχύνης (of shame), μὴ (not) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) μηδὲ (nor) δολοῦντες (falsifying) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) φανερώσει (by manifestation) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) συνιστάνοντες (commending) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) πρὸς (to) πᾶσαν (every) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

¹³ οἱ (-) γὰρ (For) τοιοῦτοι (such are) ψευδαπόστολοι (false apostles), ἐργάται (workers) δόλιοι (deceitful), μετασχηματιζόμενοι (disguising themselves) εἰς (as) ἀποστόλους (apostles) Χριστοῦ (of Christ). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) οὐ (no) θαῦμα (wonder); αὐτὸς (himself) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) μετασχηματίζεται (masquerades) εἰς (as) ἄγγελον (an angel) φωτός (of light). ¹⁵ οὐ (It is not) μέγα (surprising) οὖν (therefore), εἰ (if) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) διάκονοι (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετασχηματίζονται (masquerade) ὡς (as) διάκονοι (servants) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), ὧν (whose) τὸ (-) τέλος (end) ἔσται (will be) κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them).

³ Ἔσται (There will be) γὰρ (for) καιρὸς (a time) ὅτε (when) τῆς (-) ὑγιαινούσης (sound) διδασκαλίας (teaching) οὐκ (not) ἀνέξονται (they will endure), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (desires), ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ἐπισωρεύσουσιν (they will gather around them) διδασκάλους (teachers), κνηθόμενοι (having an itching) τὴν (-) ἀκοήν (ear), ⁴ καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) μὲν (indeed) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) τὴν (-) ἀκοὴν (hearing), ἀποστρέψουσιν (they will turn away); ἐπὶ (unto) δὲ (then) τοὺς (-) μύθους (myths) ἐκτραπήσονται (they will be turned aside).

¹¹ οὓς (whom) δεῖ (it is necessary) ἐπιστομίζειν (to silence), οἵτινες (who) ὅλους (whole) οἴκους (households) ἀνατρέπουσιν (overthrow), διδάσκοντες (teaching) ἃ (things that they) μὴ (not) δεῖ (ought), αἰσχροῦ (base) κέρδους (gain) χάριν (for the sake of).

²⁷ Πίστει (By faith) κατέλιπεν (he left) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt), μὴ (not) φοβηθεὶς (having feared) τὸν (the) θυμὸν (anger) τοῦ (of the) βασιλέως (king); τὸν (the) γὰρ (for) ἀόρατον (Invisible One) ὡς (as) ὁρῶν (seeing), ἐκαρτέρησεν (he persevered).

¹ Ἐγένοντο (There were) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσονται (there will be) ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (false teachers), οἵτινες (who) παρεισάξουσιν (will stealthily introduce) αἱρέσεις (heresies) ἀπωλείας (destructive), καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀγοράσαντα (having bought) αὐτοὺς (them) δεσπότην (Master) ἀρνούμενοι (denying), ἐπάγοντες (bringing upon) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ταχινὴν (swift) ἀπώλειαν (destruction). ² καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἐξακολουθήσουσιν (will follow after) αὐτῶν (their) ταῖς (-) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), δι’ (through) οὓς (whom) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) βλασφημηθήσεται (will be maligned). ³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), μὴ (not) παντὶ (every) πνεύματι (spirit) πιστεύετε (believe), ἀλλὰ (but) δοκιμάζετε (test) τὰ (the) πνεύματα (spirits), εἰ (whether) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (they are), ὅτι (because) πολλοὶ (many) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐξεληλύθασιν (have gone out) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).

⁷ Ὅτι (For) πολλοὶ (many) πλάνοι (deceivers) ἐξῆλθον (have entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οἱ (those) μὴ (not) ὁμολογοῦντες (confessing) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐν (in) σαρκί (flesh). οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) πλάνος (deceiver) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἀντίχριστος (antichrist). ⁸ βλέπετε (Watch) ἑαυτούς (yourselves), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἀπολέσητε (you should lose) ἃ (what things) εἰργασάμεθα* (we have worked for), ἀλλὰ (but) μισθὸν (a reward) πλήρη (full) ἀπολάβητε (you may receive). ⁹ πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) προάγων (going on ahead) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), Θεὸν (God) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has). ὁ (The one) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching), οὗτος (this one) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has). ¹⁰ Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) διδαχὴν (teaching) οὐ (not) φέρει (does bring), μὴ (not) λαμβάνετε (receive) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) οἰκίαν (the house), καὶ (and) χαίρειν (to rejoice) αὐτῷ (him) μὴ (not) λέγετε (tell); ¹¹ ὁ (the one) λέγων (telling) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (him) χαίρειν (to rejoice) κοινωνεῖ (partakes) τοῖς (in the) ἔργοις (works) αὐτοῦ (of him) τοῖς (-) πονηροῖς (evil).

⁴ παρεισέδυσαν* (Came in stealthily) γάρ (for) τινες (certain) ἄνθρωποι (men), οἱ (those) πάλαι (long ago) προγεγραμμένοι (having been designated) εἰς (unto) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) κρίμα (condemnation), ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly ones), τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us) χάριτα (grace) μετατιθέντες (changing) εἰς (into) ἀσέλγειαν (sensuality), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) μόνον (only) Δεσπότην (master) καὶ (and) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἀρνούμενοι (denying).

¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἔχω (I have) κατὰ (against) σοῦ (you) ὀλίγα (a few things), ὅτι (because) ἔχεις (you have) ἐκεῖ (some there) κρατοῦντας (holding) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) Βαλαάμ (of Balaam), ὃς (who) ἐδίδασκεν (would teach) τῷ (-) Βαλὰκ (Balak) βαλεῖν (to cast) σκάνδαλον (a snare) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), φαγεῖν (to eat) εἰδωλόθυτα (things sacrificed to idols), καὶ (and) πορνεῦσαι (to commit sexual immorality). ¹⁵ οὕτως (So) ἔχεις (have) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) κρατοῦντας (some holding) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) τῶν (of the) Νικολαϊτῶν (Nicolaitans) ὁμοίως (likewise).

²⁰ Ἀλλὰ (But) ἔχω (I have) κατὰ (against) σοῦ (you) ὅτι (that) ἀφεῖς (you tolerate) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (woman) Ἰεζάβελ (Jezebel), ἡ (the one) λέγουσα (calling) ἑαυτὴν (herself) προφῆτιν (a prophetess) καὶ (and) διδάσκει (teaching) καὶ (and) πλανᾷ (misleading) τοὺς (-) ἐμοὺς (My) δούλους (servants) πορνεῦσαι (to commit sexual immorality), καὶ (and) φαγεῖν (to eat) εἰδωλόθυτα (things sacrificed to idols).

⁹ καὶ (And) ἐβλήθη (was thrown out) ὁ (the) δράκων (dragon) ὁ (-) μέγας (great), ὁ (the) ὄφις (serpent) ὁ (-) ἀρχαῖος (ancient), ὁ (who) καλούμενος (is called) Διάβολος (the devil) καὶ (and) Ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), ὁ (-) πλανῶν (deceiving) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (inhabited world) ὅλην (whole). ἐβλήθη (He was thrown down) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐβλήθησαν (were thrown down).

²⁰ καὶ (And) ἐπιάσθη (was captured) τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast), καὶ (and) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) ὁ (the) ψευδοπροφήτης (false prophet), ὁ (the one) ποιήσας (having done) τὰ (the) σημεῖα (signs) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (him), ἐν (by) οἷς (which) ἐπλάνησεν (he deceived) τοὺς (those) λαβόντας (having received) τὸ (the) χάραγμα (mark) τοῦ (of the) θηρίου (beast) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) προσκυνοῦντας (worshiping) τῇ (the) εἰκόνι (image) αὐτοῦ (of it), ζῶντες (living) ἐβλήθησαν (were cast) οἱ (the) δύο (two) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρὸς (of fire), τῆς (-) καιομένης (burning) ἐν (with) θείῳ (brimstone).
