²² Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) νεανίσκος (young man) τὸν (the) λόγον (statement) (τοῦτον) (this), ἀπῆλθεν (he went away) λυπούμενος (grieving); ἦν (he was one) γὰρ (for) ἔχων (having) κτήματα (possessions) πολλά (many).

¹⁵ εἶπεν (he said), “Τί (What) θέλετέ (are you willing) μοι (me) δοῦναι (to give), κἀγὼ (and I) ὑμῖν (to you) παραδώσω (will betray) αὐτόν (Him)?” οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἔστησαν (they appointed) αὐτῷ (to him) τριάκοντα (thirty) ἀργύρια (pieces of silver).

³ Τότε (Then) ἰδὼν (having seen) Ἰούδας (Judas), ὁ (the one) παραδιδοὺς* (having delivered up) αὐτὸν (Him), ὅτι (that) κατεκρίθη (He was condemned), μεταμεληθεὶς (having regretted it), ἔστρεψεν (he returned) τὰ (the) τριάκοντα (thirty) ἀργύρια (pieces of silver) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχιερεῦσιν (chief priests) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέροις (elders), ⁴ λέγων (saying), “Ἥμαρτον (I sinned), παραδοὺς (having betrayed) αἷμα (blood) ἀθῷον (innocent).” Οἱ (-) δὲ (Then) εἶπαν (they said), “Τί (What is that) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us)? σὺ (You) ὄψῃ (will see).” ⁵ Καὶ (And) ῥίψας (having cast down) τὰ (the) ἀργύρια (pieces of silver) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple), ἀνεχώρησεν (he withdrew), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἀπήγξατο (hanged himself).

¹⁹ καὶ (and) αἱ (the) μέριμναι (cares) τοῦ (-) αἰῶνος (of this age), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπάτη (deceit) τοῦ (of the) πλούτου (riches), καὶ (and) αἱ (-) περὶ (of) τὰ (the) λοιπὰ (other things) ἐπιθυμίαι (desires) εἰσπορευόμεναι (entering in), συμπνίγουσιν (choke) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) ἄκαρπος (unfruitful) γίνεται (it becomes).

³⁵ ἐπεισελεύσεται (It will come) γὰρ (for) ἐπὶ (upon) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) καθημένους (sitting) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (the face) πάσης (of all) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

⁴ οὐχὶ (Not) μένον (remaining) σοὶ (to you) ἔμενεν (did it remain)? καὶ (And) πραθὲν (having been sold), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σῇ (own) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ὑπῆρχεν (it was)? τί (Why) ὅτι (-) ἔθου (did you purpose) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you) τὸ (the) πρᾶγμα (deed) τοῦτο (this)? οὐκ (Not) ἐψεύσω (you have lied) ἀνθρώποις (to men), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God)!” ⁵ Ἀκούων (Hearing) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἁνανίας (Ananias) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), πεσὼν (having fallen down), ἐξέψυξεν (he breathed his last). καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (came) φόβος (fear) μέγας (great) ἐπὶ (upon) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) ἀκούοντας (hearing).

²⁰ Πέτρος (Peter) δὲ (however) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him), “Τὸ (The) ἀργύριόν (silver) σου (of you), σὺν (with) σοὶ (you) εἴη (may it be) εἰς (to) ἀπώλειαν (destruction), ὅτι (because) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐνόμισας (you thought) διὰ (by) χρημάτων (money) κτᾶσθαι (to be obtained)!

²² ἀποθέσθαι (Are to have put off) ὑμᾶς (you), κατὰ (concerning) τὴν (the) προτέραν (former) ἀναστροφὴν (way of life), τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (which) φθειρόμενον (is being corrupted), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (its) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τῆς (-) ἀπάτης (of deceit),

⁹ εἰδὼς (knowing) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) δικαίῳ (for a righteous one) νόμος (law) οὐ (not) κεῖται (is enacted), ἀνόμοις (for the lawless) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) ἀνυποτάκτοις (insubordinate), ἀσεβέσι (for the ungodly) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλοῖς (sinful), ἀνοσίοις (for the unholy) καὶ (and) βεβήλοις (profane), πατρολῴαις (for murderers of fathers) καὶ (and) μητρολῴαις (murderers of mothers), ἀνδροφόνοις (for slayers of man),

⁷ δεῖ (It behooves him) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) μαρτυρίαν (a testimony) καλὴν (good) ἔχειν (to have) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (those) ἔξωθεν (outside), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (into) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) ἐμπέσῃ (he might fall), καὶ (and) παγίδα (the snare) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil).

²⁶ καὶ (and) ἀνανήψωσιν (they might come to their senses) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil) παγίδος (snare), ἐζωγρημένοι (having been captured) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἐκείνου (his) θέλημα (will).

¹ Ἄγε (Come) νῦν (now), οἱ (you) πλούσιοι (rich), κλαύσατε (weep), ὀλολύζοντες (wailing) ἐπὶ (over) ταῖς (the) ταλαιπωρίαις (miseries) ὑμῶν (upon you) ταῖς (that are) ἐπερχομέναις (coming). ² ὁ (The) πλοῦτος (riches) ὑμῶν (of You) σέσηπεν (have rotted), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) ὑμῶν (of you) σητόβρωτα (moth-eaten) γέγονεν (have become). ³ ὁ (The) χρυσὸς (gold) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄργυρος (silver) κατίωται (have corroded), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἰὸς (rust) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) ὑμῖν (against you) ἔσται (will be), καὶ (and) φάγεται (will eat) τὰς (the) σάρκας (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you) ὡς (like) πῦρ (fire). Ἐθησαυρίσατε (You have treasured up) ἐν (in) ἐσχάταις (the last) ἡμέραις (days). ⁴ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) μισθὸς (wage) τῶν (of the) ἐργατῶν (workmen) τῶν (-) ἀμησάντων (having harvested) τὰς (the) χώρας (fields) ὑμῶν (of you), ὁ (-) ἀφυστερημένος (having been kept back) ἀφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you), κράζει (cries out), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) βοαὶ (cries) τῶν (of those) θερισάντων (having harvested), εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) Κυρίου (of the Lord) Σαβαὼθ (of Hosts) εἰσεληλύθασιν* (have entered).

³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

¹⁵ Καταλιπόντες (Having left) εὐθεῖαν (the straight) ὁδὸν (way), ἐπλανήθησαν (they have gone astray), ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) τοῦ (-) Βοσὸρ* (son of Bosor), ὃς (who) μισθὸν (the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) ἠγάπησεν (loved); ¹⁶ ἔλεγξιν (reproof) δὲ (however) ἔσχεν (he had) ἰδίας (for his own) παρανομίας (transgression) ὑποζύγιον (by a donkey) ἄφωνον (mute); ἐν (in) ἀνθρώπου (a man’s) φωνῇ (voice) φθεγξάμενον (having spoken), ἐκώλυσεν (it restrained) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) προφήτου (prophet) παραφρονίαν (madness).

¹⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) μηδὲ (nor) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (should love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) πᾶν (all) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῶν (of the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλαζονεία* (vaunting) τοῦ (of) βίου (life), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πατρός (Father), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστίν (is). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) αὐτοῦ (of it); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ποιῶν (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).

¹¹ οὐαὶ (Woe) αὐτοῖς (to them), ὅτι (because) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Κάϊν (of Cain) ἐπορεύθησαν (they went), καὶ (and) τῇ (to the) πλάνῃ (error) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) μισθοῦ (for reward) ἐξεχύθησαν (they rushed), καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) ἀντιλογίᾳ (rebellion) τοῦ (-) Κόρε (of Korah) ἀπώλοντο (they perished).
