¹⁶ Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send forth) ὑμᾶς (you) ὡς (as) πρόβατα (sheep) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) λύκων (of wolves); γίνεσθε (be you) οὖν (therefore) φρόνιμοι (shrewd) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) ὄφεις (serpents), καὶ (and) ἀκέραιοι (innocent) ὡς (as) αἱ (the) περιστεραί (doves). ¹⁷ Προσέχετε (Beware) δὲ (however) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); παραδώσουσιν (they will deliver) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) συνέδρια (courts), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) αὐτῶν (of them), μαστιγώσουσιν (they will flog) ὑμᾶς (you); ¹⁸ καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (before) ἡγεμόνας (governors) δὲ (also), καὶ (and) βασιλεῖς (kings) ἀχθήσεσθε (you will be brought), ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me), εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles).

⁹ Τότε (Then) παραδώσουσιν (will they deliver) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (to) θλῖψιν (tribulation), καὶ (and) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (will kill) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἔσεσθε (you will be) μισούμενοι (hated) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (nations) διὰ (on account of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) τότε (then) σκανδαλισθήσονται (will fall away) πολλοὶ (many), καὶ (and) ἀλλήλους (one another) παραδώσουσιν (they will betray), καὶ (and) μισήσουσιν (will hate) ἀλλήλους (one another);

¹² Πρὸ (Before) δὲ (however) τούτων (these things) πάντων (all), ἐπιβαλοῦσιν (they will lay) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) διώξουσιν (will persecute you), παραδιδόντες (delivering you) εἰς (to) τὰς (the) συναγωγὰς (synagogues) καὶ (and) φυλακάς (prisons), ἀπαγομένους (bringing you) ἐπὶ (before) βασιλεῖς (kings) καὶ (and) ἡγεμόνας (governors) ἕνεκεν (on account of) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματός (name) μου (of Me).

¹⁹ εἰ (If) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἦτε (you were), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ἂν (-) τὸ (as its) ἴδιον (own) ἐφίλει (would love you); ὅτι (because) δὲ (however) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) οὐκ (not) ἐστέ (you are), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world), διὰ (on account of) τοῦτο (this) μισεῖ (hates) ὑμᾶς (you) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world). ²⁰ Μνημονεύετε (Remember) τοῦ (the) λόγου (word) οὗ (that) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said) ὑμῖν (to you): ‘Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) δοῦλος (a servant) μείζων (greater than) τοῦ (the) κυρίου (master) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ εἰ (If) ἐμὲ (Me) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted), καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) διώξουσιν (they will persecute); εἰ (if) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) ἐτήρησαν (they kept), καὶ (also) τὸν (-) ὑμέτερον (yours) τηρήσουσιν (they will keep). ²¹ ἀλλὰ (But) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) ποιήσουσιν (they will do) εἰς (against) ὑμᾶς (you) διὰ (on account of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me), ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (they have known) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me).

² ἀποσυναγώγους (Out of the synagogues) ποιήσουσιν (they will put) ὑμᾶς (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ἵνα (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀποκτείνας (having killed) ὑμᾶς (you) δόξῃ (will think) λατρείαν (it is a service) προσφέρειν (to offer) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

³³ ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχητε (you may have). ἐν (In) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἔχετε (you have). ἀλλὰ (But) θαρσεῖτε (take courage); ἐγὼ (I) νενίκηκα (have overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).”

²⁵ Δαυὶδ (David) γὰρ (for) λέγει (says) εἰς (about) αὐτόν (Him): ‘Προορώμην (I foresaw) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἐνώπιόν (before) μου (me) διὰ (continually) παντός (everything), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (at the) δεξιῶν (right hand) μού (of me) ἐστιν (He is), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) σαλευθῶ (I should be shaken).

¹⁶ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ὑποδείξω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅσα (how much) δεῖ (it behooves) αὐτὸν (him) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματός (name) μου (of Me) παθεῖν (to suffer).”

²² ἐπιστηρίζοντες (strengthening) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting them) ἐμμένειν (to continue) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) “Διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) θλίψεων (tribulations) δεῖ (it behooves) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

²³ πλὴν (except) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) κατὰ (in every) πόλιν (city) διαμαρτύρεταί (fully testifies) μοι (to me), λέγον (saying) ὅτι (that) δεσμὰ (chains) καὶ (and) θλίψεις (tribulations) με (me) μένουσιν (await). ²⁴ ἀλλ’ (But) οὐδενὸς (not any) λόγου (account) ποιοῦμαι (I make) τὴν (my) ψυχὴν (life) τιμίαν (dear) ἐμαυτῷ (to myself), ὡς (so as) τελειῶσαι* (to finish) τὸν (the) δρόμον (course) μου (of me), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ἣν (that) ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διαμαρτύρασθαι (to testify fully) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹¹ καὶ (and) ἐλθὼν (having come) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us), καὶ (and) ἄρας (having taken) τὴν (the) ζώνην (belt) τοῦ (-) Παύλου (of Paul), δήσας (having bound) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands), εἶπεν (he said), “Τάδε (Thus) λέγει (says) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), ‘Τὸν (The) ἄνδρα (man) οὗ (of whom) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ζώνη (belt) αὕτη (this), οὕτως (in this way) δήσουσιν (will bind) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) καὶ (and) παραδώσουσιν (will deliver him) εἰς (into) χεῖρας (the hands) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles).’”

¹³ Τότε (Then) ἀπεκρίθη (answered) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), “Τί (What) ποιεῖτε (are you doing), κλαίοντες (weeping) καὶ (and) συνθρύπτοντές (breaking) μου (my) τὴν (-) καρδίαν (heart)? ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δεθῆναι (to be bound), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἀποθανεῖν (to die) εἰς (at) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), ἑτοίμως (readiness) ἔχω (have), ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματος (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).”

³ Οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) καυχώμεθα (we glory) ἐν (in) ταῖς (-) θλίψεσιν (tribulations), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἡ (-) θλῖψις (tribulation), ὑπομονὴν (perseverance) κατεργάζεται (produces);

³⁵ Τίς (Who) ἡμᾶς (us) χωρίσει (will separate) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ)? θλῖψις (Tribulation), ἢ (or) στενοχωρία (distress), ἢ (or) διωγμὸς (persecution), ἢ (or) λιμὸς (famine), ἢ (or) γυμνότης (nakedness), ἢ (or) κίνδυνος (danger), ἢ (or) μάχαιρα (sword)? ³⁶ καθὼς (As) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (-): “Ἕνεκεν (For the sake) σοῦ (of you), θανατούμεθα (we face death) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day); ἐλογίσθημεν (we were regarded) ὡς (as) πρόβατα (sheep) σφαγῆς (of slaughter).” ³⁷ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) πᾶσιν (all), ὑπερνικῶμεν (we more than conquer) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντος (having loved) ἡμᾶς (us).

⁹ δοκῶ (I think) γάρ (for), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἡμᾶς (us) τοὺς (-) ἀποστόλους (apostles) ἐσχάτους (last) ἀπέδειξεν (has exhibited), ὡς (as) ἐπιθανατίους (appointed to death), ὅτι (because) θέατρον (a spectacle) ἐγενήθημεν (we have become) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world), καὶ (both) ἀγγέλοις (to angels) καὶ (and) ἀνθρώποις (to men).

⁵⁸ Ὥστε (Therefore), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me) ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ἑδραῖοι (steadfast) γίνεσθε (be), ἀμετακίνητοι (immovable), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἔργῳ (work) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) πάντοτε (always), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) κόπος (toil) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) κενὸς (in vain) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

¹³ Διὸ (Therefore) αἰτοῦμαι (I implore you) μὴ (not) ἐνκακεῖν (to lose heart) ἐν (at) ταῖς (the) θλίψεσίν (tribulations) μου (of me) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) δόξα (glory) ὑμῶν (of you).

²⁸ καὶ (and) μὴ (not) πτυρόμενοι (being frightened) ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (nothing) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (those) ἀντικειμένων (opposing you), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἔνδειξις (a demonstration) ἀπωλείας (of destruction); ὑμῶν (to you) δὲ (however) σωτηρίας (of salvation), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God).

²³ εἴ (if) γε (indeed) ἐπιμένετε (you continue) τῇ (-) πίστει (in the faith), τεθεμελιωμένοι (established) καὶ (and) ἑδραῖοι (firm), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) μετακινούμενοι (being moved away) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἐλπίδος (hope) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) οὗ (that) ἠκούσατε (you have heard), τοῦ (-) κηρυχθέντος (having been proclaimed) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) κτίσει (creation) τῇ (-) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven), οὗ (of which) ἐγενόμην (have become) ἐγὼ (I) Παῦλος (Paul) διάκονος (a minister).

⁹ ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔθετο (has destined) ἡμᾶς (us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (for) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) εἰς (for) περιποίησιν (obtaining) σωτηρίας (salvation) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

⁴ ὥστε (so as for) αὐτοὺς (ourselves), ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἐνκαυχᾶσθαι (to boast), ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐκκλησίαις (churches) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὑπὲρ (about) τῆς (the) ὑπομονῆς (perseverance) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πίστεως (faith) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) διωγμοῖς (persecutions) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) ταῖς (in the) θλίψεσιν (tribulations) αἷς (that) ἀνέχεσθε (you are bearing).

⁸ Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) ἐπαισχυνθῇς (you should be ashamed of) τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us), μηδὲ (nor) ἐμὲ (of me) τὸν (the) δέσμιον (prisoner) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ἀλλὰ (but) συνκακοπάθησον (suffer together) τῷ (for the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel), κατὰ (according to) δύναμιν (the power) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹¹ τοῖς (-) διωγμοῖς (persecutions), τοῖς (-) παθήμασιν (sufferings) οἷά (such as) μοι (to me) ἐγένετο (happened) ἐν (in) Ἀντιοχείᾳ (Antioch), ἐν (in) Ἰκονίῳ (Iconium), ἐν (in) Λύστροις (Lystra); οἵους (what manner of) διωγμοὺς (persecutions) ὑπήνεγκα (I endured)! καὶ (And yet) ἐκ (out of) πάντων (all), με (me) ἐρρύσατο (delivered) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord). ¹² καὶ (Also) πάντες (all) δὲ (now) οἱ (-) θέλοντες (desiring) ζῆν (to live) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) διωχθήσονται (will be persecuted).

²¹ Εἰς (To this) τοῦτο (hereunto) γὰρ (for) ἐκλήθητε (you have been called), ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἔπαθεν (suffered) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), ὑμῖν (you) ὑπολιμπάνων (leaving) ὑπογραμμὸν (an example) ἵνα (that) ἐπακολουθήσητε (you should follow after) τοῖς (the) ἴχνεσιν (steps) αὐτοῦ (of Him):

¹² Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), μὴ (not) ξενίζεσθε (be surprised at) τῇ (the) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) πυρώσει (fire) πρὸς (for) πειρασμὸν (a trial) ὑμῖν (to you) γινομένῃ (taking place), ὡς (as if) ξένου (a strange thing) ὑμῖν (to you) συμβαίνοντος (were happening). ¹³ ἀλλὰ (But) καθὸ (as) κοινωνεῖτε (you have shared) τοῖς (in the) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) παθήμασιν (sufferings), χαίρετε (rejoice), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀποκαλύψει (revelation) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), χαρῆτε (you may rejoice) ἀγαλλιώμενοι (exulting). ¹⁴ Εἰ (If) ὀνειδίζεσθε (you are insulted) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), μακάριοι (you are blessed), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀναπαύεται (rests).

¹⁰ Μηδὲν* (Not) φοβοῦ (fear) ἃ (what) μέλλεις (you are about) πάσχειν (to suffer). ἰδοὺ (Behold), μέλλει (is about) βάλλειν (to cast) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἐξ (some of) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἵνα (so that) πειρασθῆτε (you might be tested); καὶ (and) ἕξετε (you shall have) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἡμερῶν (days) δέκα (ten). γίνου (Be) πιστὸς (faithful) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death), καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you) τὸν (the) στέφανον (crown) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life).

¹³ Οἶδα (I know) ποῦ (where) κατοικεῖς (you dwell), ὅπου (where) ὁ (the) θρόνος (throne) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan is); καὶ (and) κρατεῖς (you hold fast to) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠρνήσω (you have denied) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) μου (of Me), καὶ (even) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Ἀντιπᾶς (of Antipas), ὁ (the) μάρτυς (witness) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) πιστός (faithful one) μου (of Me) ὃς (who) ἀπεκτάνθη (was killed) παρ’ (among) ὑμῖν (you), ὅπου (where) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) κατοικεῖ (dwells).
