²² And all extolled him; and they wondered at the words of grace which proceeded out of his mouth, and said: Is not this the son of Joseph?

⁵⁴ And he came into his own country, and taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said: Whence has this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? ⁵⁵ Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary? and his brothers, James and Joses and Simon and Judas? ⁵⁶ And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence, then, has this man all these things?

² And when the sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many that heard him were astonished, and said: Whence has this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given to him, that even such mighty deeds are done by his hands? ³ Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and Judah and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they found in him cause for offense.

⁴⁷ And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding, and his answers.

¹⁵ for I will give you a mouth, and wisdom, which all your opposers shall not be able to gainsay or withstand.

⁴² And they said: Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How, then, does he say, I came down from heaven?

⁴⁶ The attendants answered: Never did man speak like this man.

¹⁰ And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.
