¹ This second letter I now write to you, beloved; in both of these I arouse your pure mind to remembrance, ² that you may be mindful of the words formerly spoken by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior: ³ knowing this first, that there will come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, ⁴ and saying: Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. ⁵ For they are willingly ignorant of this, that by the word of God, the heavens of old had their being as also the earth consisting of water and subsisting by water, ⁶ by which things the world that then was, having been overflowed with water, perished. ⁷ But the heavens and the earth that now are, by the same word are kept in store, reserved for fire against the day of judgment, and perdition of ungodly men. ⁸ But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. ⁹ The Lord does not delay concerning his promise, as some men count delay, but he is long-suffering toward us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. ¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, and the earth, and the works that are on it, shall be burned up. ¹¹ Seeing, then, that all these things shall be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in all holy behavior, and godliness, ¹² looking for and earnestly desiring the coming of the day of God, because of which coming the heavens shall dis solve in fire, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. ¹³ But we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, in which dwells righteousness. ¹⁴ Wherefore, beloved, seeing that you expect such things, earnestly strive, by being spotless and blameless, to be found by him in peace: ¹⁵ and count the long-suffering of our Lord, salvation, even as our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, has written to you; ¹⁶ as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. ¹⁷ Do you, therefore, beloved, since you know these things be forehand, beware, lest, being led away with the error of the wicked, you fall from your own steadfastness. ¹⁸ But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

³ But he answered and said to them: And why do you transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

⁶ And Jesus said to them: Take heed and be ware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

¹¹ How is it that you do not understand, that I did not speak of bread when I commanded you to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

²⁹ Jesus answered and said to them: You err, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.

²⁴ For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect. ²⁵ Behold, I have told you beforehand. ²⁶ Therefore, if they say to you: Behold, he is in the desert; go not out: Behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

⁴¹ Then will he say to those on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.

⁷ and will not God avenge his elect, who cry to him day and night, though he delay long in respect to them? ⁸ I say to you, that he will avenge them speedily. Yet, when the Son of man comes, will he find the faith on the earth?

¹⁵ for I will give you a mouth, and wisdom, which all your opposers shall not be able to gainsay or withstand.

²⁷ And beginning from Moses, and all the prophets, he explained to them, in all the Scriptures, the things concerning himself.

⁴⁴ And he said to them: These are the words that I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled that are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For every one that does evil, hates the light, and comes not to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

²³ that all may honor the Son, as they honor the Father. He that honors not the Son, honors not the Father who sent him.

⁴ But these things I have told you, that, when the time has come, you may remember that I told you of them. But these things I did not tell you at the beginning, because I was with you.

⁴² And they attended constantly to the teaching of the apostles, and the fellowship, and the breaking of bread, and the prayers.

¹⁸ But the things which God fore told by the mouth of all his prophets, that the Christ should suffer, he has thus fulfilled.

²¹ whom heaven must retain, till the time for restoring all things that God has spoken by the mouth of his holy prophets of ancient times.

²⁴ And all the prophets, from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have also foretold these days. ²⁵ You are the sons of the prophets, and of the covenant that God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. ²⁶ To you first, God, having raised up his Son Jesus, has sent him to bless you, in turning every one of you away from his iniquities.

¹⁰ and delivered him from all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharoah, king of Egypt: and he made him governor over Egypt, and his whole house.

⁴³ To him all the prophets bear testimony, that whoever believes on him shall receive remission of sins through his name.

²⁵ it has seemed good to us, having come together with one mind, to send chosen men to you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

²³ And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging; to whom, from morning till evening;, he earnestly testified, and set forth the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses, and from the prophets.

²⁸ And as they refused to acknowledge God, God delivered them up to an undiscerning mind, to do detestable things;

⁴ Or, do you despise the riches of his goodness, and his forbearance, and his long suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? ⁵ But, according to your hard and impenitent heart, you treasure up to yourself wrath for a day of wrath, and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

¹ There is now, therefore, no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. ² For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has freed me from the law of sin, and of death. ³ For what the law could not do, because it was weak through the flesh, God has done, who, sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for a sin-offering, condemned sin in the flesh, ⁴ that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. ⁵ For those who are according to the flesh, mind the things of the flesh; but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. ⁶ For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace. ⁷ Because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can it be. ⁸ Those, then, who are in the flesh, can not please God. ⁹ But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now, if any one has not the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. ¹⁰ But if Christ is in you, the body is dead, on account of sin, but the Spirit is life, on ac count of righteousness. ¹¹ And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he that raised the Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies, because of his Spirit that dwells in you. ¹² Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh; ¹³ for if you live according to the flesh, you shall die: but if, through the Spirit, you put to death the deeds of the body, you shall live. ¹⁴ For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. ¹⁵ For you have not again received the spirit of bondage, that you may fear; but you have received the spirit of adoption, by which we cry, Abba, Father. ¹⁶ The Spirit itself testifies with our spirit, that we are the children of God; ¹⁷ and, if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified together. ¹⁸ For I consider the sufferings of the present time not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed for us. ¹⁹ For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the revelation of the sons of God. ²⁰ For the creature was subject to frailty, (not by its own will, but for his sake who subjected it,)

If God be for us, who can be against us? ³² He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how will he not with him also freely give us all things? ³³ "Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifies. ³⁴ Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died: rather, indeed, that has risen, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. ³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of the Christ? Shall affliction, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or the sword? ³⁶ As it is written: For thy sake, we are killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Yet, in all these things, we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, ³⁹ nor hight, nor depth, nor any other creature, will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. SECTION THIRD. God's Dealings with Israel as a People,

²² What, then, if God, intending to show his wrath, and to make his power known, yet, in much long-suffering bore with the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction:

²⁵ For I do not wish you, brethren, to be ignorant of this mystery lest you be wise in your own conceit that blindness has happened to Israel in part, till the full number of the Gen tiles shall have come in.

³⁶ For from him, and by him, and for him, are all things. To him be glory through the ages! Amen.

But when the scripture says, that all things are put under him, it is evident that he is excepted, who did put all things under him. ²⁸ And when all things shall have been put under him, then, also, shall the Son himself be subjected to him that did put all things under him, that God may be the all in all. ²⁹ For else, what shall those do, who are immersed for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why, then, are they immersed for the dead? ³⁰ And why are we in danger every hour? ³¹ I protest, by the joy which I have over you in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. ³² If, to speak as a man, I have fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me, if the dead rise not? Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die. ³³ Be not deceived: Evil communications corrupt good manners. ³⁴ Awake, as you should, to soberness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. ³⁵ But some one will say: How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? ³⁶ Thoughtless man! That which you sow is not made alive, unless it die; ³⁷ and as to that which you sow, you sow not the body that shall be produced, but the naked grain, it may be of wheat, or of some other grain: ³⁸ but God gives it a body, as it pleases him; and to every seed, its proper body. ³⁹ All flesh is not the same flesh; but there is one flesh of men, another of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. ⁴⁰ There are also bodies celestial, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and that of the terrestrial is another. ⁴¹ There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory. ⁴² So, also, is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption: ⁴³ it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power: ⁴⁴ it is sown an animal body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is an animal body, and there is a spiritual body. ⁴⁵ So, also, it is written: The first man Adam became a living soul, the last Adam a life-giving spirit. ⁴⁶ But that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is animal; and afterward that which is spiritual. ⁴⁷ The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man, the Lord from heaven. ⁴⁸ As the earthy man was, such also are the earthy; and as the heavenly man is, such also shall the heavenly be. ⁴⁹ And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. ⁵⁰ But this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood can not inherit the kingdom of God, nor does corruption inherit incorruption. ⁵¹ Behold, I declare to you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed ⁵² in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet: For the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. ⁵³ For this corruptible body must put on incorruptibility; and this mortal body must put on immortality. ⁵⁴ And when this corruptible body shall have put on incorruptibility, and this mortal body shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the word that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. ⁵⁵ Death, where is thy sting? Hades, where is thy victory? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁵⁸ Therefore, my be loved brethren, be firm, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord; for you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

¹² For the ground of our rejoicing is this: the testimony of our conscience that we have lived in the world more abundantly, indeed, for you in sincerity and godly purity, not in carnal wisdom, but in the grace of God.

² but we have renounced the secret works of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor adulterating the word of God; but, by the manifestation of the truth, commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

⁶ Because God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts, to give the light of the glorious knowledge of God in the person of Jesus Christ.

³ But I fear lest, as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity which pertains to Christ.

¹³ For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, trans forming themselves into the apostles of Christ; ¹⁴ and no wonder, for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. ¹⁵ Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves so as to be like the ministers of righteousness; of such, the end shall be according to their works.

² I have foretold, and now the second time, as if I was present, though being absent, I foretell to those who have sinned, and to all others, that, if I come again, I will not spare;

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the acknowledgment of him,

²⁰ having been builded upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone,

³ that by revelation was made known to me the mystery, (as I briefly wrote above,

¹⁴ that we might no longer be children, tossed and carried about by every wind of teaching, through the artifice of men, through craftiness used by them for the deliberate planning of deceit; ¹⁵ but speaking truthfully in love, we might grow up in all things, into him who is the head, even the Christ,

⁶ being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you, will carry it on till the day of Jesus Christ;

¹⁰ in order that you may distinguish things that differ, to the end that you may be pure and blameless till the day of Christ,

²⁷ Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of the Christ, that, whether I come and see you, or be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one soul striving together for the faith of the gospel, ²⁸ and in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of destruction, but to you of salvation, and that from God.

¹⁵ that you may be without reproach and Harmless, the children of God, without blame, in the midst of a wicked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as luminaries in the world,

⁸ Yes, verily, I also count all things to be loss, for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, on account of whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them to be refuse, that I may gain Christ,

¹⁹ whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. ²⁰ But our citizenship is in heaven, whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

¹⁰ so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, in order to please him in all things, by means of every good work bringing forth fruit, and increasing in the knowledge, of God,

¹⁷ and he is before all things, and by him all things consist:

⁵ For, though I am absent in flesh, yet I am present with you in spirit, rejoicing to behold your order, and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

⁸ See that no one make you the victims of imposture by means of philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the rudiments of the world, and not ac cording to Christ:

¹⁰ and have put on the new man, which is renewed for knowledge, ac cording to the image of him that created him;

⁵ For our gospel came not to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in full assurance, as you know what sort of persons we were among you for your sakes.

¹⁹ For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? -You indeed are our glory and

¹³ in order that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness, in the presence of our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

¹ Finally, then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you, by our Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to walk and please God, you would abound more and more. ² For you know what commandments we gave you by our Lord Jesus. ³ For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you keep yourselves from lewdness; ⁴ That each one of you know how to keep his vessel in sanctification and in honor, ⁵ not in passionate desire, as the Gentiles do, who know not God;

² for you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night:

²³ Now the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

³ We are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren, as it is right, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all toward each other abounds:

⁷ and to you that are afflicted, rest with us, at the revelation of our Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, ⁸ in flaming fire, to take vengeance on those who know not God, and who obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ;
