²⁵ For you people were wandering away like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

³⁶ But when He saw the large crowds He felt compassion for them because they were distressed and disoriented like sheep without a shepherd.

¹² What do you think? If anyone had a hundred sheep, and one of them wandered away, would he not leave the ninety-nine [safe ones] and go to the mountains looking for the one that wandered away?

⁴ “Which one of you who has a hundred sheep, and loses one of them, would not leave the ninety-nine in a deserted place and go looking for the lost one until he finds it? ⁵ And when he finds it, he places it on his shoulders [i.e., to return it], and is so glad. ⁶ And when he gets home, he calls his friends and neighbors together and says to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I found my sheep that was lost.’

¹¹ “I am the good shepherd; and a good shepherd [is willing] to die for the sheep. ¹² The person who is [only] a hired hand, and not the shepherd, [and] who does not own the sheep [himself], sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away. So, the wolf attacks the flock and scatters [the sheep]. ¹³ [The reason] he runs away is because he is a hired hand and does not [really] care about the sheep. ¹⁴ I am the good shepherd and I know my sheep [intimately], and they know me [that way], ¹⁵ just like the Father knows me [intimately] and I know the Father [that way]. And I [am about to] give up my life for the sheep. ¹⁶ I have other sheep [also] which are not [presently] in this corral; I must lead them, too. They will hear my voice and become one flock [i.e., with the others], having one shepherd. [Note: This probably refers to believing Gentiles becoming God’s people, along with the Jews].

²⁸ So, pay close attention to your [own] lives, and to all [members] of the flock [i.e., the congregation] of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers [i.e., elders, shepherds or pastors]. Provide [spiritual] food for the church of the Lord which He purchased by [shedding] His own blood.

¹ Therefore, holy brothers [and sisters], who have been called [by God] to share in heaven, think about Jesus, the Apostle and Head Priest, whom we have confessed [as Savior].

²⁰ Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep [i.e., the church], through the blood of the never ending Agreement [i.e., Christ’s blood],

⁴ And when the Supreme Shepherd [i.e., Jesus] comes back, you will receive [for your effort] a glorious crown [of reward] that will never fade away [Note: The idea of “fading away” is suggested by the laurel wreath bestowed on the winner of an athletic contest].
