¹ Again it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan came also among them to present himself before Jehovah. ² And Jehovah said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. ³ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. ⁴ And Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. ⁵ But put forth thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce thee to thy face. ⁶ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.
⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. ⁸ And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself therewith; and he sat among the ashes. ⁹ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? renounce God, and die. ¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and they made an appointment together to come to bemoan him and to comfort him. ¹² And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his robe, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. ¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

⁶ Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

¹ In the year that king Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple. ² Above him stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

¹⁹ And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to do service for the sake of them that shall inherit salvation?

⁸ And he said, Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.

⁷ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

³⁰ I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me;

⁴ in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn [upon them].

⁸ Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,

⁹ These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, [and] perfect in his generations: Noah walked with God.

²⁰ And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

⁸ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

¹¹ But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

²¹ and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah. ²² In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

¹⁷ For he breaketh me with a tempest,
And multiplieth my wounds without cause.

²⁰ Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me:
Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse.

¹⁵ Behold, he will slay me; I have no hope:
Nevertheless I will maintain my ways before him.

⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you:
Till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go:
My heart shall not reproach [me] so long as I live.

Judge me, O Jehovah, for I have walked in mine integrity:
I have trusted also in Jehovah without wavering.

³⁷ Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright;
For there is a [happy] end to the man of peace.

¹² And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity,
And settest me before thy face for ever.

⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble,
And the wicked cometh in his stead.

⁶ Righteousness guardeth him that is upright in the way;
But wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

² He that walketh in his uprightness feareth Jehovah;
But he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah;
But the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁷ The highway of the upright is to depart from evil:
He that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.

³ Jesus answered, { Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

¹² Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect: but I press on, if so be that I may lay hold on that for which also I was laid hold on by Christ Jesus.

¹² Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which [the Lord] promised to them that love him.

⁷ that the proof of your faith, [being] more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffered a little while, shall himself perfect, establish, strengthen you.

³ Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favor in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request: ⁴ for we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my peace, although the adversary could not have compensated for the king's damage.

²⁰ In that day men shall cast away their idols of silver, and their idols of gold, which have been made for them to worship, to the moles and to the bats; ²¹ to go into the caverns of the rocks, and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth.

⁸ But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not; for we have stores hidden in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren.

²⁵ Therefore I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment?

²⁶ For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

¹⁸ And as we labored exceedingly with the storm, the next day they began to throw [the freight] overboard; ¹⁹ and the third day they cast out with their own hands the tackling of the ship.

⁸ Yea verily, and I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse, that I may gain Christ, ⁹ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, [even] that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith: ¹⁰ that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming conformed unto his death;

¹⁵ And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin.

¹⁷ And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, O Jehovah my God, be against me, and against my father's house; but not against thy people, that they should be plagued.

⁵ And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁹ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? renounce God, and die.

²⁰ My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh,
And I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. ²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends;
For the hand of God hath touched me.

³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away
Through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me:
My moisture was changed [as] with the drought of summer. [Selah

² For thine arrows stick fast in me,
And thy hand presseth me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation;
Neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over my head:
As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt,
Because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly;
I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with burning;
And there is no soundness in my flesh.

¹⁰ Remove thy stroke away from me:
I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.

²¹ And they shall pass through it, sore distressed and hungry; and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse by their king and by their God, and turn their faces upward:

¹² And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

¹⁰ And marked out for it my bound,
And set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further;
And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

⁷ Who stilleth the roaring of the seas,
The roaring of their waves,
And the tumult of the peoples.

²⁹ For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For oftentimes it had seized him: and he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters; and breaking the bands asunder, he was driven of the demon into the deserts. ³⁰ And Jesus asked him, What is thy name? And he said, Legion; for many demons were entered into him. ³¹ And they entreated him that he would not command them to depart into the abyss. ³² Now there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they entreated him that he would give them leave to enter into them. And he gave them leave. ³³ And the demons came out from the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were drowned.

³¹ Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat: ³² but I made supplication for thee, that thy faith fail not; and do thou, when once thou hast turned again, establish thy brethren.}

¹³ There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.

¹⁰ Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.

¹ And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. ² And he laid hold on the dragon, the old serpent, which is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years,

⁷ And when the thousand years are finished, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

⁹ And it shall become small dust over all the land of Egypt, and shall be a boil breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt. ¹⁰ And they took ashes of the furnace, and stood before Pharaoh; and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven; and it became a boil breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast. ¹¹ And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boils were upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

²⁷ Jehovah will smite thee with the boil of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scurvy, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.

³⁵ Jehovah will smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore boil, whereof thou canst not be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the crown of thy head.

²² And Jehovah said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust;
My skin closeth up, and breaketh out afresh.

¹⁷ In the night season my bones are pierced in me,
And the [pains] that gnaw me take no rest. ¹⁸ By [God's] great force is my garment disfigured;
It bindeth me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He hath cast me into the mire,
And I am become like dust and ashes.

³⁰ My skin is black, [and falleth] from me,
And my bones are burned with heat.

⁶ From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; [but] wounds, and bruises, and fresh stripes: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with oil.

¹⁷ therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and Jehovah will lay bare their secret parts.

¹¹ and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores; and they repented not of their works.

¹⁹ And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head, and went her way, crying aloud as she went.

¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed,
And my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ They that dwell in my house, and my maids, count me for a stranger;
I am an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I call unto my servant, and he giveth me no answer,
[Though] I entreat him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife,
And my supplication to the children of mine own mother.

⁶ Wherefore I abhor [myself],
And repent in dust and ashes.

⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt,
Because of my foolishness.

⁷ For my loins are filled with burning;
And there is no soundness in my flesh.

³ to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

²⁶ O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for the destroyer shall suddenly come upon us.

³⁰ and shall cause their voice to be heard over thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes:

⁶ And the tidings reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

²¹ { Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²⁰ and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the [crumbs] that fell from the rich man's table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

⁶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

¹² And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

⁴ For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not perfect with Jehovah his God, as was the heart of David his father.

³³ And while he was yet talking with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of Jehovah; why should I wait for Jehovah any longer?

³ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

¹⁴ And they say unto God, Depart from us;
For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

¹⁴ Ye have said, It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept his charge, and that we have walked mournfully before Jehovah of hosts?

¹⁷ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

²⁰ Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to-day, who uncovered himself to-day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! ²¹ And David said unto Michal, [It was] before Jehovah, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Jehovah, over Israel: therefore will I play before Jehovah.

¹³ And I, whither shall I carry my shame? and as for thee, thou wilt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

²² And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

²⁸ For all my father's house were but dead men before my lord the king; yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet that I should cry any more unto the king?

¹⁰ And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in that which I have done: but now, O Jehovah, put away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

⁹ For the eyes of Jehovah run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly; for from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil. ² And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. ³ His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

¹⁰ Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

I said, I will take heed to my ways,
That I sin not with my tongue:
I will keep my mouth with a bridle,
While the wicked is before me.

¹² [For] the sin of their mouth, [and] the words of their lips,
Let them even be taken in their pride,
And for cursing and lying which they speak.

⁶ Leave off, ye simple ones, and live;
And walk in the way of understanding.

¹³ The foolish woman is clamorous;
[She is] simple, and knoweth nothing.

³⁸ Out of the mouth of the Most High cometh there not evil and good? ³⁹ Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
⁴⁰ Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to Jehovah. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

³⁴ Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. ³⁵ The good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth good things: and the evil man out of his evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. ³⁶ And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.}

²³ But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art a stumbling-block unto me: for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things of men.

² And five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

¹¹ Jesus therefore said unto Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

¹² rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing stedfastly in prayer;

⁹ Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

¹⁰ Take, brethren, for an example of suffering and of patience, the prophets who spake in the name of the Lord. ¹¹ Behold, we call them blessed that endured: ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord, how that the Lord is full of pity, and merciful.

² And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.

¹¹ And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the first-born of Esau: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz,

³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down to Sheol to my son mourning. And his father wept for him.

³² And the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she bare Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan: Sheba, and Dedan.

¹⁴ To him that is ready to faint kindness [should be showed] from his friend;
Even to him that forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.

¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked,
The companies of Sheba waited for them.

¹ Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

⁴ But ye are forgers of lies;
Ye are all physicians of no value.

¹ Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

² I have heard many such things:
Miserable comforters are ye all.

²⁰ My friends scoff at me:
[But] mine eye poureth out tears unto God,

¹ Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,

¹⁹ All my familiar friends abhor me,
And they whom I loved are turned against me.

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends;
For the hand of God hath touched me.

⁷ And it was so, that, after Jehovah had spoken these words unto Job, Jehovah said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.

¹¹ Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him concerning all the evil that Jehovah had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one a ring of gold.

¹⁷ A friend loveth at all times;
And a brother is born for adversity.

²⁴ He that maketh many friends [doeth it] to his own destruction;
But there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

¹⁰ Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not;
And go not to thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity:
Better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off.

¹⁹ These two things are befallen thee, who shall bemoan thee? desolation and destruction, and the famine and the sword; how shall I comfort thee?

⁷ Of Edom. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

¹⁹ and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that rejoice; weep with them that weep.

²⁶ And whether one member suffereth, all the members suffer with it; or [one] member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

³ Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; them that are ill-treated, as being yourselves also in the body.

³⁴ When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceeding great and bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.

⁶ And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of Jehovah until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.

⁴ And it came to pass, when the angel of Jehovah spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

¹⁹ So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Beth-lehem, that all the city was moved about them, and [the women] said, Is this Naomi? ²⁰ And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me. ²¹ I went out full, and Jehovah hath brought me home again empty; why call ye me Naomi, seeing Jehovah hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

⁴ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and spake these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁴ Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.

³⁶ And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voice, and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.

¹ Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth upon them.

¹ Now when Mordecai knew all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

²⁰ Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed,
And my familiar friends have forgotten me.

¹⁰ The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, they keep silence;
They have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth:
The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

⁷ Her nobles were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk;
They were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was as of sapphire. ⁸ Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets:
Their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.

¹⁹ And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, wherein all that had their ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

⁵ And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

⁸ And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

¹⁰ And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

³ And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my robe, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down confounded.

⁴ And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

² If one assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved?
But who can withhold himself from speaking?

⁴ Thou holdest mine eyes watching:
I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

²⁶ And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she shall be desolate and sit upon the ground.

¹ Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

¹⁵ Then I came to them of the captivity at Tel-abib, that dwelt by the river Chebar, and to where they dwelt; and I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days.
