¹ Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. ² Now I praise you that ye remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. ³ But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. ⁴ Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head. ⁵ But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven. ⁶ For if a woman is not veiled, let her also be shorn: but if it is a shame to a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be veiled. ⁷ For a man indeed ought not to have his head veiled, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. ⁸ For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man: ⁹ for neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man: ¹⁰ for this cause ought the woman to have [a sign of] authority on her head, because of the angels. ¹¹ Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord. ¹² For as the woman is of the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God. ¹³ Judge ye in yourselves: is it seemly that a woman pray unto God unveiled? ¹⁴ Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a dishonor to him? ¹⁵ But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. ¹⁶ But if any man seemeth to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
¹⁷ But in giving you this charge, I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better but for the worse. ¹⁸ For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and I partly believe it. ¹⁹ For there must be also factions among you, that they that are approved may be made manifest among you. ²⁰ When therefore ye assemble yourselves together, it is not possible to eat the Lord's supper: ²¹ for in your eating each one taketh before [other] his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken. ²² What, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you? In this I praise you not. ²³ For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread; ²⁴ and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me. ²⁵ In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink [it], in remembrance of me. ²⁶ For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord's death till he come. ²⁷ Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. ²⁸ But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup. ²⁹ For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body. ³⁰ For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep. ³¹ But if we discerned ourselves, we should not be judged. ³² But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. ³³ Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, wait one for another. ³⁴ If any man is hungry, let him eat at home; that your coming together be not unto judgment. And the rest will I set in order whensoever I come.

² Let each one of us please his neighbor for that which is good, unto edifying. ³ For Christ also pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell upon me.

¹⁶ I beseech you therefore, be ye imitators of me.

³³ even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the [profit] of the many, that they may be saved.

¹ Be ye therefore imitators of God, as beloved children; ² and walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odor of a sweet smell.

⁴ not looking each of you to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others. ⁵ Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

¹⁷ Brethren, be ye imitators together of me, and mark them that so walk even as ye have us for an ensample.

⁶ And ye became imitators of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit;

⁹ not because we have not the right, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you, that ye should imitate us.

¹² that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

²⁸ Her children rise up, and call her blessed;
Her husband also, and he praiseth her, saying: ²⁹ Many daughters have done worthily,
But thou excellest them all. ³⁰ Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain;
[But] a woman that feareth Jehovah, she shall be praised. ³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands;
And let her works praise her in the gates.

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

¹⁷ For this cause have I sent unto you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, who shall put you in remembrance of my ways which are in Christ, even as I teach everywhere in every church.

¹⁷ Only, as the Lord hath distributed to each man, as God hath called each, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all the churches.

¹⁷ But in giving you this charge, I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better but for the worse.

²² What, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you? In this I praise you not.

² by which also ye are saved, if ye hold fast the word which I preached unto you, except ye believed in vain.

⁶ But when Timothy came even now unto us from you, and brought us glad tidings of your faith and love, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, longing to see us, even as we also [to see] you;

¹ Finally then, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as ye received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, even as ye do walk,—that ye abound more and more. ² For ye know what charge we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

¹⁵ So then, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye were taught, whether by word, or by epistle of ours.

⁶ Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which they received of us.

¹⁶ Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy pain and thy conception; in pain thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

³ and he said unto me, Thou art my servant; Israel, in whom I will be glorified. ⁴ But I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nought and vanity; yet surely the justice [due] to me is with Jehovah, and my recompense with my God.
⁵ And now saith Jehovah that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, and that Israel be gathered unto him (for I am honorable in the eyes of Jehovah, and my God is become my strength); ⁶ yea, he saith, It is too light a thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.

¹³ Behold, my servant shall deal wisely, he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high.

⁴ Behold, I have given him for a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander to the peoples.

¹ The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah is upon me; because Jehovah hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening [of the prison] to them that are bound; ² to proclaim the year of Jehovah's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; ³ to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.
⁴ And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

¹⁸ And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, { All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.

³⁴ For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure. ³⁵ The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

²⁰ For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and greater works than these will he show him, that ye may marvel. ²¹ For as the Father raiseth the dead and giveth them life, even so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. ²² For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son; ²³ that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father that sent him. ²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life. ²⁵ Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself: ²⁷ and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man. ²⁸ Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice, ²⁹ and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.
³⁰ I can of myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is righteous; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

²⁸ Ye heard how I said to you, I go away, and I come unto you. If ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced, because I go unto the Father: for the Father is greater than I.

² even as thou gavest him authority over all flesh, that to all whom thou hast given him, he should give eternal life. ³ And this is life eternal, that they should know thee the only true God, and him whom thou didst send, [even] Jesus Christ. ⁴ I glorified thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which thou hast given me to do. ⁵ And now, Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

²³ and ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

²⁷ For, He put all things in subjection under his feet. But when he saith, All things are put in subjection, it is evident that he is excepted who did subject all things unto him. ²⁸ And when all things have been subjected unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subjected to him that did subject all things unto him, that God may be all in all.

²⁰ which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly [places], ²¹ far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: ²² and he put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church, ²³ which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

¹⁵ but speaking truth in love, may grow up in all things into him, who is the head, [even] Christ;

²² Wives, [be in subjection] unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. ²³ For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, [being] himself the saviour of the body. ²⁴ But as the church is subject to Christ, so [let] the wives also [be] to their husbands in everything.

⁷ but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men; ⁸ and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient [even] unto death, yea, the death of the cross. ⁹ Wherefore also God highly exalted him, and gave unto him the name which is above every name; ¹⁰ that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of [things] in heaven and [things] on earth and [things] under the earth, ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

¹⁸ And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

¹⁰ and in him ye are made full, who is the head of all principality and power:

¹⁹ and not holding fast the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and bands, increaseth with the increase of God.

¹⁸ Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

¹¹ Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection. ¹² But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness.

¹ In like manner, ye wives, [be] in subjection to your own husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behavior of their wives;

⁵ For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: ⁶ as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose children ye now are, if ye do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.

³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of the [mount of] Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

⁴ And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

¹⁴ Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a dishonor to him?

¹⁰ and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits: to another [divers] kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues:

²⁸ And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, [divers] kinds of tongues.

¹ Follow after love; yet desire earnestly spiritual [gifts], but rather that ye may prophesy. ² For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. ³ But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation. ⁴ He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. ⁵ Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. ⁶ But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching? ⁷ Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they give not a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? ⁸ For if the trumpet give an uncertain voice, who shall prepare himself for war? ⁹ So also ye, unless ye utter by the tongue speech easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye will be speaking into the air. ¹⁰ There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and no [kind] is without signification. ¹¹ If then I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be to him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh will be a barbarian unto me. ¹² So also ye, since ye are zealous of spiritual [gifts], seek that ye may abound unto the edifying of the church. ¹³ Wherefore let him that speaketh in a tongue pray that he may interpret. ¹⁴ For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. ¹⁵ What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. ¹⁶ Else if thou bless with the spirit, how shall he that filleth the place of the unlearned say the Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he knoweth not what thou sayest? ¹⁷ For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. ¹⁸ I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all: ¹⁹ howbeit in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
²⁰ Brethren, be not children in mind: yet in malice be ye babes, but in mind be men. ²¹ In the law it is written, By men of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers will I speak unto this people; and not even thus will they hear me, saith the Lord. ²² Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to the unbelieving: but prophesying [is for a sign], not to the unbelieving, but to them that believe. ²³ If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad? ²⁴ But if all prophesy, and there come in one unbelieving or unlearned, he is reproved by all, he is judged by all; ²⁵ the secrets of his heart are made manifest; and so he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

¹² then thou shalt bring her home to thy house; and she shall shave her head, and pare her nails;

³⁶ And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,

¹⁷ And it shall be in the last days, saith God,
I will pour forth of my Spirit upon all flesh:
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
And your young men shall see visions,
And your old men shall dream dreams:

⁹ Now this man had four virgin daughters, who prophesied.

³⁴ let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law.

¹⁸ And the priest shall set the woman before Jehovah, and let the hair of the woman's head go loose, and put the meal-offering of memorial in her hands, which is the meal-offering of jealousy: and the priest shall have in his hand the water of bitterness that causeth the curse.

⁵ A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment; for whosoever doeth these things is an abomination unto Jehovah thy God.

²⁶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. ²⁷ And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

¹ This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

⁶ Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

⁶ Thou makest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;
Thou hast put all things under his feet:

³ But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

⁹ Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:

²¹ And Jehovah God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof: ²² and the rib, which Jehovah God had taken from the man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. ²³ And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

¹³ For Adam was first formed, then Eve;

¹⁸ And Jehovah God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.

²⁰ And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help meet for him.

²³ And the man said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. ²⁴ Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

¹⁶ And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, it is for thee a covering of the eyes to all that are with thee; and in respect of all thou art righted.

⁶⁴ And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel. ⁶⁵ And she said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant said, It is my master: and she took her veil, and covered herself.

⁶ Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thy hands?

¹⁰ See that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to do service for the sake of them that shall inherit salvation?

¹⁰ But unto the married I give charge, [yea] not I, but the Lord, That the wife depart not from her husband ¹¹ (but should she depart, let her remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband); and that the husband leave not his wife. ¹² But to the rest say I, not the Lord: If any brother hath an unbelieving wife, and she is content to dwell with him, let him not leave her. ¹³ And the woman that hath an unbelieving husband, and he is content to dwell with her, let her not leave her husband. ¹⁴ For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in the brother: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.

¹² For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. ¹³ For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit. ¹⁴ For the body is not one member, but many. ¹⁵ If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body. ¹⁶ And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; it is not therefore not of the body. ¹⁷ If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? ¹⁸ But now hath God set the members each one of them in the body, even as it pleased him. ¹⁹ And if they were all one member, where were the body? ²⁰ But now they are many members, but one body. ²¹ And the eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of thee: or again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. ²² Nay, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary:

²⁸ There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male and female; for ye all are one [man] in Christ Jesus.

⁴ Jehovah hath made everything for its own end;
Yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

³⁶ For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him [be] the glory for ever. Amen.

⁶ yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him.

² hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in [his] Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds; ³ who being the effulgence of his glory, and the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had made purification of sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

⁵⁷ And why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?

²⁴ Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.}

¹⁵ I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

²⁶ And when he cut the hair of his head (now it was at every year's end that he cut it; because it was heavy on him, therefore he cut it); he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king's weight.

³⁵ And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church.

²¹ and they have been informed concerning thee, that thou teachest all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children neither to walk after the customs.

²⁴ these take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges for them, that they may shave their heads: and all shall know that there is no truth in the things whereof they have been informed concerning thee; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, keeping the law.

³³ for God is not [a God] of confusion, but of peace.

As in all the churches of the saints, ³⁴ let the women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as also saith the law.

¹ Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I gave order to the churches of Galatia, so also do ye.

¹⁴ For ye, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judζa in Christ Jesus: for ye also suffered the same things of your own countrymen, even as they did of the Jews;

³ If any man teacheth a different doctrine, and consenteth not to sound words, [even] the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; ⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

¹⁷ Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

⁵ Better is open rebuke
Than love that is hidden.

¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; new moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies,—I cannot away with iniquity and the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth; they are a trouble unto me; I am weary of bearing them.

¹ Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and declare unto my people their transgression, and to the house of Jacob their sins. ² Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near unto God. ³ Wherefore have we fasted, [say they], and thou seest not? [wherefore] have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find [your own] pleasure, and exact all your labors. ⁴ Behold, ye fast for strife and contention, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye fast not this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.

⁹ Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods that ye have not known, ¹⁰ and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered; that ye may do all these abominations?

³ For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same:

²³ If therefore the whole church be assembled together and all speak with tongues, and there come in men unlearned or unbelieving, will they not say that ye are mad?

²⁶ What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

²⁵ not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting [one another]; and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh.

¹⁴ or unto governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evil-doers and for praise to them that do well.

¹⁰ Now I beseech you, brethren, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and [that] there be no divisions among you; but [that] ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment. ¹¹ For it hath been signified unto me concerning you, my brethren, by them [that are of the household] of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. ¹² Now this I mean, that each one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.

³ for ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you jealousy and strife, are ye not carnal, and do ye not walk after the manner of men?

¹ It is actually reported that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not even among the Gentiles, that one [of you] hath his father's wife.

¹ Dare any of you, having a matter against his neighbor, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints?

³ thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or unto that dreamer of dreams: for Jehovah your God proveth you, to know whether ye love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

⁷ Woe unto the world because of occasions of stumbling! for it must needs be that the occasions come; but woe to that man through whom the occasion cometh!

³⁵ yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.

¹ And he said unto his disciples, { It is impossible but that occasions of stumbling should come; but woe unto him, through whom they come!

¹⁷ But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,

⁵ But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who believed, saying, It is needful to circumcise them, and to charge them to keep the law of Moses.

³⁰ and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

⁵ For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of insurrections among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

¹⁴ But this I confess unto thee, that after the Way which they call a sect, so serve I the God of our fathers, believing all things which are according to the law, and which are written in the prophets;

⁵ having knowledge of me from the first, if they be willing to testify, that after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

²² But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against.

⁵ Try your own selves, whether ye are in the faith; prove your own selves. Or know ye not as to your own selves, that Jesus Christ is in you? unless indeed ye be reprobate. ⁶ But I hope that ye shall know that we are not reprobate. ⁷ Now we pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we may appear approved, but that ye may do that which is honorable, though we be as reprobate.

²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties,

¹ But the Spirit saith expressly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons, ² through the hypocrisy of men that speak lies, branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron;

¹⁰ A factious man after a first and second admonition refuse;

¹ But there arose false prophets also among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers, who shall privily bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. ² And many shall follow their lascivious doings; by reason of whom the way of the truth shall be evil spoken of.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but [they went out], that they might be made manifest that they all are not of us.

¹⁶ The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a communion of the body of Christ? ¹⁷ seeing that we, who are many, are one bread, one body: for we are all partake of the one bread. ¹⁸ Behold Israel after the flesh: have not they that eat the sacrifices communion with the altar?

²³ For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread; ²⁴ and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me. ²⁵ In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink [it], in remembrance of me.

¹³ suffering wrong as the hire of wrong-doing; [men] that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you;

¹² These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

⁵ Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker;
[And] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

²⁸ Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood.

³² Give no occasion of stumbling, either to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the church of God:

⁹ For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

⁵ (but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

¹⁵ but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world [to be] rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him? ⁶ But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?

⁵ Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as Jehovah my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it.

² Ye know that after two days the passover cometh, and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.

¹⁷ Now on the first [day] of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where wilt thou that we make ready for thee to eat the passover?

²⁶ And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it; and he gave to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. ²⁷ And he took a cup, and gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, { Drink ye all of it; ²⁸ for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many unto remission of sins.

³⁴ Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, that this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

²⁰ teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.}

²² And as they were eating, he took bread, and when he had blessed, he brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take ye: this is my body. ²³ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them: and they all drank of it. ²⁴ And he said unto them, { This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

¹⁹ And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. ²⁰ And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, { This cup is the new covenant in my blood, [even] that which is poured out for you.

⁷ And upon the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul discoursed with them, intending to depart on the morrow; and prolonged his speech until midnight.

³ For I delivered unto you first of all that which also I received: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

¹ Paul, an apostle (not from men, neither through man, but through Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead),

¹¹ For I make known to you, brethren, as touching the gospel which was preached by me, that it is not after man. ¹² For neither did I receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but [it came to me] through revelation of Jesus Christ.

² For ye know what charge we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

¹⁴ And this day shall be unto you for a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to Jehovah: throughout your generations ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

⁷ then ye shall say unto them, Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah; when it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.

²⁶ The meek shall eat and be satisfied;
They shall praise Jehovah that seek after him:
Let your heart live for ever.

²⁹ All the fat ones of the earth shall eat and worship:
All they that go down to the dust shall bow before him,
Even he that cannot keep his soul alive.

⁴ He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered:
Jehovah is gracious and merciful.

⁵ Come, eat ye of my bread,
And drink of the wine which I have mingled.

⁴ Draw me; we will run after thee:
The king hath brought me into his chambers;
We will be glad and rejoice in thee;
We will make mention of thy love more than of wine:
Rightly do they love thee.

¹ I am come into my garden, my sister, [my] bride:
I have gathered my myrrh with my spice;
I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey;
I have drunk my wine with my milk.
Eat, O friends;
Drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.

⁶ And in this mountain will Jehovah of hosts make unto all peoples a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on the lees, of fat things full of marrow, of wines on the lees well refined.

⁸ Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Jehovah, have we waited for thee; to thy name, even to thy memorial [name], is the desire of our soul.

¹ Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. ² Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. ³ Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live: and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

¹³ Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, that also which this woman hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.}

⁵³ Jesus therefore said unto them, { Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves. ⁵⁴ He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁵⁵ For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. ⁵⁶ He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him. ⁵⁷ As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me. ⁵⁸ This is the bread which came down out of heaven: not as the fathers ate, and died; he that eateth this bread shall live for ever.}

⁷ Purge out the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, even as ye are unleavened. For our passover also hath been sacrificed, [even] Christ: ⁸ wherefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

³ and did all eat the same spiritual food; ⁴ and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them: and the rock was Christ.

²⁰ And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, { This cup is the new covenant in my blood, [even] that which is poured out for you.

⁶ who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

¹⁴ but their minds were hardened: for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remaineth, it not being revealed [to them] that it is done away in Christ.

¹⁵ And for this cause he is the mediator of a new covenant, that a death having taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they that have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. ¹⁶ For where a testament is, there must of necessity be the death of him that made it. ¹⁷ For a testament is of force where there hath been death: for it doth never avail while he that made it liveth. ¹⁸ Wherefore even the first [covenant] hath not been dedicated without blood. ¹⁹ For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses unto all the people according to the law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, ²⁰ saying, This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded to you-ward.

²⁰ Now the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, [even] our Lord Jesus,

³ And if I go and prepare a place for you, I come again, and will receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.

²² Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what [is that] to thee? follow thou me.

¹¹ who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.

²³ But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; then they that are Christ's, at his coming.

¹⁶ For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first;

¹⁰ when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be marvelled at in all them that believed (because our testimony unto you was believed) in that day.

² to the end that ye be not quickly shaken from your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by epistle as from us, as that the day of the Lord is just at hand; ³ let no man beguile you in any wise: for [it will not be], except the falling away come first, and the man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition,

²⁸ so Christ also, having been once offered to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to them that wait for him, unto salvation.

¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

²⁸ And now, [my] little children, abide in him; that, if he shall be manifested, we may have boldness, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

¹⁴ And to these also Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones,

⁷ Behold, he cometh with the clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they that pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth shall mourn over him. Even so, Amen.

¹¹ And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. ¹² And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.

²⁰ He who testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly. Amen: come, Lord Jesus.

¹ And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before Jehovah, which he had not commanded them. ² And there came forth fire from before Jehovah, and devoured them, and they died before Jehovah. ³ Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that Jehovah spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

¹⁰ Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If any man of you or of your generations shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be on a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the passover unto Jehovah.

¹³ But the man that is clean, and is not on a journey, and forbeareth to keep the passover, that soul shall be cut off from his people; because he offered not the oblation of Jehovah in its appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.

¹⁸ For a multitude of the people, even many of Ephraim and Manasseh, Issachar and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet did they eat the passover otherwise than it is written. For Hezekiah had prayed for them, saying, The good Jehovah pardon every one ¹⁹ that setteth his heart to seek God, Jehovah, the God of his fathers, though [he be] not [cleansed] according to the purification of the sanctuary. ²⁰ And Jehovah hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people.

¹¹ But when the king came in to behold the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding-garment:

⁵¹ I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.}

⁶³ It is the spirit that giveth life; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit, and are life. ⁶⁴ But there are some of you that believe not.} For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who it was that should betray him.

¹⁸ I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth my bread lifted up his heel against me. ¹⁹ From henceforth I tell you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he]. ²⁰ Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.}
²¹ When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. ²² The disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. ²³ There was at the table reclining in Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. ²⁴ Simon Peter therefore beckoneth to him, and saith unto him, Tell [us] who it is of whom he speaketh. ²⁵ He leaning back, as he was, on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? ²⁶ Jesus therefore answereth, He it is, for whom I shall dip the sop, and give it him. So when he had dipped the sop, he taketh and giveth it to Judas, [the son] of Simon Iscariot. ²⁷ And after the sop, then entered Satan into him. Jesus therefore saith unto him, What thou doest, do quickly.

²¹ Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of demons: ye cannot partake of the table of the Lord, and of the table of demons.

²⁹ of how much sorer punishment, think ye, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

¹⁰ Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If any man of you or of your generations shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be on a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the passover unto Jehovah. ¹¹ In the second month on the fourteenth day at even they shall keep it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs: ¹² they shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break a bone thereof: according to all the statute of the passover they shall keep it. ¹³ But the man that is clean, and is not on a journey, and forbeareth to keep the passover, that soul shall be cut off from his people; because he offered not the oblation of Jehovah in its appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.

² Examine me, O Jehovah, and prove me;
Try my heart and my mind. ³ For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes;
And I have walked in thy truth. ⁴ I have not sat with men of falsehood;
Neither will I go in with dissemblers. ⁵ I hate the assembly of evil-doers,
And will not sit with the wicked. ⁶ I will wash my hands in innocency:
So will I compass thine altar, O Jehovah; ⁷ That I may make the voice of thanksgiving to be heard,
And tell of all thy wondrous works.

⁴⁰ Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to Jehovah.

⁵ Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and in the seventh [month], even these seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? ⁶ And when ye eat, and when ye drink, do not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves? ⁷ [Should ye] not [hear] the words which Jehovah cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, and the South and the lowland were inhabited?

²³ If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee, ²⁴ leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

³¹ But if we discerned ourselves, we should not be judged.

²⁰ because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God;

⁵ Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart discerneth time and judgment:

² Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment.

²⁴ and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.

²⁷ Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

³⁰ For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep.

³² But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. ³³ Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, wait one for another. ³⁴ If any man is hungry, let him eat at home; that your coming together be not unto judgment. And the rest will I set in order whensoever I come.

¹⁴ But solid food is for fullgrown men, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

¹ Be not many [of you] teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment.

¹² But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by the heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath: but let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay; that ye fall not under judgment.

²⁶ and he said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of Jehovah thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his eyes, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon thee, which I have put upon the Egyptians: for I am Jehovah that healeth thee.

¹² And Jehovah said unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed not in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.

²⁴ Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

⁶ And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. ⁷ And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. ⁸ And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live. ⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

¹⁴ Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. ¹⁵ And Nathan departed unto his house.

And Jehovah struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick. ¹⁶ David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. ¹⁷ And the elders of his house arose, [and stood] beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. ¹⁸ And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

²¹ and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the commandment which Jehovah thy God commanded thee, ²² but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy body shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. ²³ And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, [to wit], for the prophet whom he had brought back. ²⁴ And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his body was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the body.

O Jehovah, rebuke me not in thy wrath;
Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² For thine arrows stick fast in me,
And thy hand presseth me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation;
Neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over my head:
As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt,
Because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly;
I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with burning;
And there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and sore bruised:
I have groaned by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

³⁰ They were not estranged from that which they desired,
Their food was yet in their mouths, ³¹ When the anger of God went up against them,
And slew of the fattest of them,
And smote down the young men of Israel.

³¹ If they break my statutes,
And keep not my commandments; ³² Then will I visit their transgression with the rod,
And their iniquity with stripes. ³³ But my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him,
Nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. ³⁴ My covenant will I not break,
Nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

² You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will visit upon you all your iniquities.

³⁶ For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

³² But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

⁵¹ Behold, I tell you a mystery: We all shall not sleep, but we shall all be changed,

¹⁴ For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

⁵ and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons,
My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord,
Nor faint when thou art reproved of him; ⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth,
And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. ⁷ It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom [his] father chasteneth not? ⁸ But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

³ When I kept silence, my bones wasted away
Through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me:
My moisture was changed [as] with the drought of summer. [Selah
⁵ I acknowledged my sin unto thee,
And mine iniquity did I not hide:
I said, I will confess my transgressions unto Jehovah;
And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. [Selah

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself [thus], Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf unaccustomed [to the yoke]: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art Jehovah my God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. ²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a darling child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my heart yearneth for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith Jehovah.

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight: ¹⁹ I am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. ²⁰ And he arose, and came to his father. But while he was yet afar off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

²⁸ But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

⁵ Remember therefore whence thou art fallen, and repent and do the first works; or else I come to thee, and will move thy candlestick out of its place, except thou repent.

² Be thou watchful, and establish the things that remain, which were ready to die: for I have found no works of thine perfected before my God. ³ Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep [it], and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

⁵ And thou shalt consider in thy heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so Jehovah thy God chasteneth thee.

¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth:
Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. ¹⁸ For he maketh sore, and bindeth up;
He woundeth, and his hands make whole.

¹⁸ He keepeth back his soul from the pit,
And his life from perishing by the sword.
¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed,
And with continual strife in his bones; ²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread,
And his soul dainty food. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen;
And his bones that were not seen stick out. ²² Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit,
And his life to the destroyers.
²³ If there be with him an angel,
An interpreter, one among a thousand,
To show unto man what is right for him; ²⁴ Then [God] is gracious unto him, and saith,
Deliver him from going down to the pit,
I have found a ransom. ²⁵ His flesh shall be fresher than a child's;
He returneth to the days of his youth. ²⁶ He prayeth unto God, and he is favorable unto him,
So that he seeth his face with joy:
And he restoreth unto man his righteousness. ²⁷ He singeth before men, and saith,
I have sinned, and perverted that which was right,
And it profited me not: ²⁸ He hath redeemed my soul from going into the pit,
And my life shall behold the light.
²⁹ Lo, all these things doth God work,
Twice, [yea] thrice, with a man, ³⁰ To bring back his soul from the pit,
That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.

³¹ For hath any said unto God, I have borne [chastisement], I will not offend [any more]: ³² That which I see not teach thou me:
If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more?

¹² Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Jehovah,
And teachest out of thy law; ¹³ That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity,
Until the pit be digged for the wicked.

¹⁸ Jehovah hath chastened me sore;
But he hath not given me over unto death.

¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of Jehovah;
Neither be weary of his reproof: ¹² For whom Jehovah loveth he reproveth;
Even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

⁵ Why will ye be still stricken, that ye revolt more and more? the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

²⁸ And thou shalt say unto them, This is the nation that hath not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah their God, nor received instruction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

² She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in Jehovah; she drew not near to her God.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

¹⁹ We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in the evil one.

¹⁹ But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will; and I will know, not the word of them that are puffed up, but the power.

²¹ for in your eating each one taketh before [other] his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken. ²² What, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you? In this I praise you not.

² Upon the first day of the week let each one of you lay by him in store, as he may prosper, that no collections be made when I come.

⁵ But I will come unto you, when I shall have passed through Macedonia; for I pass through Macedonia;

⁵ For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge;
