⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

²³ I will heap mischiefs on them; I will spend my arrows on them. ²⁴ They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts on them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges on the enemy.

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers compass me round about, he splits my reins asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach on breach, he runs on me like a giant.

²⁰ His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

¹⁵ Terrors are turned on me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my welfare passes away as a cloud.

²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

¹³ He has also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordains his arrows against the persecutors.

¹⁴ Yes, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightning, and discomfited them.

¹² Therefore shall you make them turn their back, when you shall make ready your arrows on your strings against the face of them.

² For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me sore.

⁵ Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under you.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath goes over me; your terrors have cut me off.

⁷ Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit fails: hide not your face from me, lest I be like to them that go down into the pit.

¹⁴ The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.

³³ And he takes with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy; ³⁴ And said to them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful to death: tarry you here, and watch.

³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

¹¹ Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest to God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
