⁵ Thus said the LORD, the God of Israel; Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge them that are carried away captive of Judah, whom I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good.

¹⁶ Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers knew not, that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end;

¹² Blessed is the man whom you chasten, O LORD, and teach him out of your law; ¹³ That you may give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be dig for the wicked. ¹⁴ For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept your word.

⁷¹ It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn your statutes.

⁷ The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knows them that trust in him.

⁹ And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

¹² But he answered and said, Truly I say to you, I know you not.

²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

²⁸ And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

³ But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

⁹ But now, after that you have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn you again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto you desire again to be in bondage?

¹⁹ Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his. And, Let every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to children, My son, despise not you the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are rebuked of him: ⁶ For whom the Lord loves he chastens, and whips every son whom he receives. ⁷ If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chastens not? ⁸ But if you be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are you bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they truly for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
