³ And Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

¹ And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be you perfect.

³ And God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a multitude of people;

¹² And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. ¹³ And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac: the land where on you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed; ¹⁴ And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. ¹⁵ And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places where you go, and will bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken to you of. ¹⁶ And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not. ¹⁷ And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. ¹⁸ And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on the top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

⁶ So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him. ⁷ And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

⁹ And God appeared to Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him. ¹⁰ And God said to him, Your name is Jacob: your name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be your name: and he called his name Israel. ¹¹ And God said to him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of you, and kings shall come out of your loins; ¹² And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to you I will give it, and to your seed after you will I give the land.

³ And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.

²³ And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

⁴ Yes, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication to him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us;

¹¹ Having the glory of God: and her light was like to a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;
