¹⁵ Hereby you shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh you shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come here.

⁷ And Joseph saw his brothers, and he knew them, but made himself strange to them, and spoke roughly to them; and he said to them, From where come you? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

¹² And he said to them, No, but to see the nakedness of the land you are come.

¹⁶ Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and you shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies.

²⁰ But bring your youngest brother to me; so shall your words be verified, and you shall not die. And they did so.

³⁰ The man, who is the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.

³⁴ And bring your youngest brother to me: then shall I know that you are no spies, but that you are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and you shall traffic in the land.

³ And Judah spoke to him, saying, The man did solemnly protest to us, saying, You shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

²⁰ And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him. ²¹ And you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him. ²² And we said to my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die. ²³ And you said to your servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, you shall see my face no more. ²⁴ And it came to pass when we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. ²⁵ And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food. ²⁶ And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us. ²⁷ And your servant my father said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons: ²⁸ And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since: ²⁹ And if you take this also from me, and mischief befall him, you shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. ³⁰ Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life; ³¹ It shall come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave. ³² For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, If I bring him not to you, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever. ³³ Now therefore, I pray you, let your servant abide instead of the lad a slave to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers. ³⁴ For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

¹³ You shall fear the LORD your God, and serve him, and shall swear by his name.

²⁶ And she said, Oh my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman that stood by you here, praying to the LORD.

⁵⁵ And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As your soul lives, O king, I cannot tell.

³ And David swore moreover, and said, Your father certainly knows that I have found grace in your eyes; and he said, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.

² And though they say, The LORD lives; surely they swear falsely.

⁷ How shall I pardon you for this? your children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots' houses.

³³ Again, you have heard that it has been said by them of old time, You shall not forswear yourself, but shall perform to the Lord your oaths: ³⁴ But I say to you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: ³⁵ Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. ³⁶ Neither shall you swear by your head, because you can not make one hair white or black. ³⁷ But let your communication be, Yes, yes; No, no: for whatever is more than these comes of evil.

¹⁶ Woe to you, you blind guides, which say, Whoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! ¹⁷ You fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ¹⁸ And, Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is guilty. ¹⁹ You fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? ²⁰ Whoever therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things thereon. ²¹ And whoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it, and by him that dwells therein. ²² And he that shall swear by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him that sits thereon.

¹² But above all things, my brothers, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yes be yes; and your no, no; lest you fall into condemnation.
