⁹ And he said to his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field. And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. ⁵ He sent messengers therefore to Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor, which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

² For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the silly one.

²⁴ And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies. ²⁵ He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtly with his servants.

²⁸ In the multitude of people is the king's honor: but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

⁴ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbor. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

³ For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. ¹⁶ For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

⁵ Do you think that the scripture said in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?
