²⁹ But this I say, brothers, the time is short: it remains, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. ² He comes forth like a flower, and is cut down: he flees also as a shadow, and continues not.

⁴ LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am. ⁵ Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: truly every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah. ⁶ Surely every man walks in a vain show: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heaps up riches, and knows not who shall gather them. ⁷ And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in you.

⁵ You carry them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which grows up. ⁶ In the morning it flourishes, and grows up; in the evening it is cut down, and wither. ⁷ For we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath are we troubled. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. ¹⁰ The days of our years are three score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

¹² For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, where you go.

⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return to God who gave it. ⁸ Vanity of vanities, said the preacher; all is vanity.

¹³ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. ¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

¹ Behold, the LORD makes the earth empty, and makes it waste, and turns it upside down, and scatters abroad the inhabitants thereof. ² And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.

⁶ The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: ⁷ The grass wither, the flower fades: because the spirit of the LORD blows on it: surely the people is grass. ⁸ The grass wither, the flower fades: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

¹¹ And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. ¹² The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

³¹ And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passes away.

¹³ Let us go forth therefore to him without the camp, bearing his reproach. ¹⁴ For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

¹³ Go to now, you that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: ¹⁴ Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. ¹⁵ For that you ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. ¹⁶ But now you rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

²⁴ For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass wither, and the flower thereof falls away:

⁷ But the end of all things is at hand: be you therefore sober, and watch to prayer.

⁸ But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. ⁹ The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

¹⁷ And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God stays for ever.
