⁴ Go and tell David my servant, Thus said the LORD, You shall not build me an house to dwell in:

⁴ And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, ⁵ Go and tell my servant David, Thus said the LORD, Shall you build me an house for me to dwell in?

¹⁹ Nevertheless you shall not build the house; but your son that shall come forth out of your loins, he shall build the house to my name.

⁷ And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house to the name of the LORD my God: ⁸ But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, You have shed blood abundantly, and have made great wars: you shall not build an house to my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in my sight.

² Then David the king stood up on his feet, and said, Hear me, my brothers, and my people: As for me, I had in my heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building: ³ But God said to me, You shall not build an house for my name, because you have been a man of war, and have shed blood.

⁸ But the LORD said to David my father, For as much as it was in your heart to build an house for my name, you did well in that it was in your heart: ⁹ Notwithstanding you shall not build the house; but your son which shall come forth out of your loins, he shall build the house for my name.

⁸ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, said the LORD. ⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! ³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord? or who has been his counselor?
