¹ O LORD, the God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee. ² Let my prayer enter into thy presence. Incline thine ear to my cry. ³ For my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol. ⁴ I am reckoned with those who go down into the pit. I am as a man who has no help, ⁵ cast off among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom thou remember no more, and they are cut off from thy hand. ⁶ Thou have laid me in the lowest pit, in dark places, in the deeps. ⁷ Thy wrath lays hard upon me, and thou have afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah. ⁸ Thou have put my acquaintances far from me. Thou have made me an abomination to them. I am shut up, and I cannot come forth. ⁹ My eye wastes away because of affliction. I have called daily upon thee, O LORD, I have spread forth my hands to thee. ¹⁰ Will thou show wonders to the dead? Shall those who are deceased arise and praise thee? Selah. ¹¹ Shall thy loving kindness be declared in the grave, or thy faithfulness in destruction? ¹² Shall thy wonders be known in the dark, and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? ¹³ But to thee, O LORD, I have cried, and in the morning my prayer shall come before thee. ¹⁴ LORD, why do thou cast off my soul? Why do thou hide thy face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer thy terrors I am confounded. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath has gone over me. Thy terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came round about me like water all the day long. They encompassed me around together. ¹⁸ Thou have put beloved and friend far from me, and my acquaintances into darkness.

¹⁸ I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.

³¹ For he was wiser than all men: than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame was in all the nations round about.

⁶ And the sons of Zerah: Zimri, and Ethan, and Heman, and Calcol, and Dara; five of them in all.

⁶ Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou may hearken to the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee at this time, day and night, for the sons of Israel thy servants while I confess the sins of the sons of Israel, which we have sinned against thee. Yea, I and my father's house have sinned.

² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou answer not, and in the night season, and I am not silent.

⁵ He shall receive a blessing from LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

¹ LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? LORD is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?

⁹ Hide not thy face from me. Put not thy servant away in anger. Thou have been my help. Cast me not off, nor forsake me, O God of my salvation.

¹⁴ Deliver me from blood guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation. And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.

¹ The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity. There is none who does good.

⁷ With God is my salvation and my glory. The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

⁵ By awesome things thou will answer us in righteousness, O God of our salvation, thou who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of those who are afar off upon the sea,

¹⁹ Blessed be the Lord, who bears our burden daily, even the God who is our salvation. Selah.

⁹ Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name. And deliver us, and forgive our sins, for thy name's sake.

³ Be merciful to me, O Lord, for to thee do I cry all the day long.

⁷ O LORD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou have covered my head in the day of battle.

² Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust, and will not be afraid, for LORD, even LORD, is my strength and song, and he has become my salvation.

⁶ I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem. They shall never keep silent day nor night. Ye who are LORD's reminders, take ye no rest,

⁴⁷ and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

³⁰ because my eyes have seen thy salvation,

³⁷ and this woman was a widow to eighty-four years), who did not depart from the temple, serving with fastings and supplications night and day.

⁷ And God, will he, no, not do the vengeance of his chosen who cry out to him day and night, and yet being patient toward them?

¹⁰ praying night and day above extraordinary in order to see your face and to mend the deficiencies of your faith?

³ I have gratitude to God whom I serve from the forefathers in a pure conscience, as I have unceasing remembrance about thee in my supplications, night and day

¹⁰ not pilfering, but demonstrating all good fidelity, so that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

¹³ Awaiting the blessed hope and appearance of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

⁴ But when the kindness and philanthropy of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, not of works in righteousness that we did, but according to his mercy through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ which he poured out upon us abundantly, through Jesus Christ our Savior. ⁷ So that, having been made righteous by the grace of that man, we may become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

³¹ If a man sins against his neighbor, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and he comes and swears before thine altar in this house,

² Bow down thine ear to me. Deliver me speedily. Be thou to me a strong rock, a house of defense to save me.

¹¹ Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee. According to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those who are appointed to death,

¹ LORD, I have called upon thee. Make haste to me. Give ear to my voice when I call to thee. ² Let my prayer be set forth as incense before thee, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

⁸ Yea, when I cry, and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.

² O that my grief were but weighed, and all my calamity laid in the balances! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas. Therefore my words have been rash. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison of which my spirit drinks up. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

²² Yea, his soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the destroyers.

¹¹ Be not far from me, for trouble is near, for there is none to help. ¹² Many bulls have encompassed me. Strong bulls of Bashan have beset me around. ¹³ They gape upon me with their mouth, as a ravening and a roaring lion. ¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted within me. ¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue clings to my jaws, and thou have brought me into the dust of death. ¹⁶ For dogs have encompassed me. A company of evildoers have enclosed me. They pierced my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I may count all my bones. They look and stare upon me. ¹⁸ They part my garments among them, and upon my vesture do they cast a lot. ¹⁹ But be thou not far off, O LORD. O thou my succor, hasten thee to help me. ²⁰ Deliver my soul from the sword, the only one of me from the power of the dog. ²¹ Save me from the lion's mouth, yea, from the horns of the wild-oxen. Thou have answered me.

¹⁷ and hide not thy face from thy servant, for I am in distress. Answer me speedily. ¹⁸ Draw near to my soul, and redeem it. Ransom me because of my enemies. ¹⁹ Thou know my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonor. My adversaries are all before thee. ²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness. And I looked for some to take pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. ²¹ They also gave me gall for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and slacked not. My soul refused to be comforted.

¹⁴ LORD, why do thou cast off my soul? Why do thou hide thy face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer thy terrors I am confounded.

¹⁸ Their soul abhors all manner of food, and they draw near to the gates of death.

²⁶ They mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the depths. Their soul melts away because of trouble.

³ For the enemy has persecuted my soul. He has smitten my life down to the ground. He has made me to dwell in dark places as those who have been long dead. ⁴ Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate.

³ He was despised, and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. And as him from whom men hide their face he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

¹⁰ Yet it pleased LORD to bruise him. He has put him to grief. When thou shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed. He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of LORD shall prosper in his hand. ¹¹ He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied. By the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant justify many, and he shall bear their iniquities.

¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness. He has sated me with wormwood. ¹⁶ He has also broken my teeth with gravel stones. He has covered me with ashes. ¹⁷ And thou have removed my soul far off from peace. I forgot prosperity. ¹⁸ And I said, My strength is perished, and my expectation from LORD. ¹⁹ Remember my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

³⁷ And having taken Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and distressed. ³⁸ Then Jesus says to them, My soul is deeply grieved, as far as of death. Remain ye here and watch with me. ³⁹ And having gone forward a little, he fell on his face praying, and saying, My Father, if it be possible, may this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I want, but as thou.

³³ And he takes Peter and James and John with him, and began to be greatly disturbed, and very distressed. ³⁴ And he says to them, My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Remain ye here, and watch.

¹ My spirit is consumed, my days are extinct, the grave is ready for me.

¹ To thee, O LORD, I will call. My rock, be not thou deaf to me, lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like those who go down into the pit.

⁹ What profit is there in my blood when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? Shall it declare thy truth?

¹² I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind. I am like a broken vessel.

²² for I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. ²³ I am gone like the shadow when it declines. I am tossed up and down as the locust. ²⁴ My knees are weak through fasting, and my flesh fails of fatness.

⁷ Make haste to answer me, O LORD, my spirit fails. Hide not thy face from me, lest I become like those who go down into the pit.

¹⁷ Behold, for peace I had great bitterness. But thou have by love for my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption. For thou have cast all my sins behind thy back. ¹⁸ For Sheol cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee. Those who go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.

²⁰ then I will bring thee down with those who descend into the pit, to the people of old time, and will make thee to dwell in the nether parts of the earth, in the places that are desolate of old, with those who go down to the pit, that thou not be inhabited. And I will set glory in the land of the living.

⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth with its bars closed upon me forever. Yet thou have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God.

⁶ For while we were yet weak, in due time Christ died for the impious.

⁹ But we ourselves have had the sentence of death in ourselves, so that we should not be trusting in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead.

⁴ For even if he was crucified from weakness, yet he lives from the power of God. For we in him are also weak, but we will live with him from the power of God toward you.

¹ And God remembered Noah, and all the beasts, and all the cattle that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided.

²⁹ And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.

⁹ Even that it would please God to crush me, that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

¹⁰ If he passes through, and shuts up, and all to judgment, then who can hinder him?

²² As for me, I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes. Nevertheless thou heard the voice of my supplications when I cried to thee.

¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath has gone over me. Thy terrors have cut me off.

²³ who remembered us in our low estate, for his loving kindness is forever,

⁹ Sheol from beneath is moved for thee, to meet thee at thy coming. It stirs up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth. It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. ¹⁰ They shall all answer and say to thee, Have thou also become weak as we? Have thou become like us? ¹¹ Thy pomp is brought down to Sheol, and the noise of thy viols. The worm is spread under thee, and worms cover thee. ¹² How thou are fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! How thou are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low!

¹⁰ I said, In the noontide of my days I shall go into the gates of Sheol. I am deprived of the residue of my years. ¹¹ I said, I shall not see LORD, even LORD in the land of the living. I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world. ¹² My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me as a shepherd's tent. I have rolled up, like a weaver, my life. He will cut me off from the loom. From day even to night thou will make an end of me.

⁸ In his humiliation his justice was taken away. And as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?

¹⁸ Son of man, wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations, to the nether parts of the earth, with those who go down into the pit. ¹⁹ Whom do thou pass in beauty? Go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised. ²⁰ They shall fall in the midst of those who are slain by the sword. She is delivered to the sword. Draw her away and all her multitudes. ²¹ The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of Sheol with those who help him. They have gone down. They lie still, even the uncircumcised, slain by the sword. ²² Asshur is there and all her company. Her graves are round about her, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, ²³ whose graves are set in the outermost parts of the pit. And her company is round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who caused terror in the land of the living. ²⁴ There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who have gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, who caused their terror in the land of the living, and have borne their shame with those who go down to the pit. ²⁵ They have set a bed for her in the midst of the slain with all her multitude. And they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. ³¹ Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, says the lord LORD. ³² For I have put his terror in the land of the living, and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude, says the lord LORD.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison of which my spirit drinks up. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

¹⁶ And if my head exalts itself, thou hunt me as a lion. And again thou show thyself marvelous upon me.

⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me. My moisture was changed as with the drought of summer. Selah.

¹ O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath, nor chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

⁷ Deep calls to deep at the noise of thy waterfalls. All thy waves and thy billows have gone over me.

⁷ For we are consumed in thine anger, and in thy wrath are we troubled.

¹⁰ because of thine indignation and thy wrath. For thou have taken me up, and cast me away.

³ For thou cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me. All thy waves and thy billows passed over me.

³⁶ He who believes in the Son has eternal life, but he who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

⁵ But according to thy hardness, and thy impenitent heart, thou store up wrath to thyself in the day of wrath, and revelation, and righteous judgment of God, ⁶ who will render to each man according to his works, ⁷ to those who indeed seek by perseverance of good work, glory and esteem and immortality-eternal life- ⁸ but to those of self-interest, and who indeed disobey the truth but have confidence in unrighteousness-anger and wrath, ⁹ pressure and restriction, upon every soul of man who produces evil, both of the Jew first, and of the Greek,

²⁴ Who himself took up our sins in his body upon the tree, so that we, having died to sins, might live to the righteousness of him from whose wound ye were healed.

¹⁶ And they say to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. ¹⁷ Because the great day of his wrath has come, and who is able to stand?

¹⁸ And those two made a covenant before LORD. And David abode in the forest, and Jonathan went to his house. ¹⁹ Then the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself with us in the strongholds in the forest, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desert? ²⁰ Now therefore, O king, come down, according to all the desire of thy soul to come down, and our part shall be to deliver him up into the king's hand.

¹⁴ Behold, he breaks down, and it cannot be built again. He shuts up a man, and there can be no opening.

⁸ He has walled up my way that I cannot pass, and has set darkness in my paths.

¹³ He has put my brothers far from me, and my acquaintances are wholly estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ Those who dwell in my house, and my maids, reckon me for a stranger; I am an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I call to my servant, and he gives me no answer. I entreat him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife, and my supplication to the sons of my own mother. ¹⁸ Even young children despise me. If I arise, they speak against me. ¹⁹ All my familiar friends abhor me, and those whom I loved are turned against me.

¹⁰ They abhor me. They stand aloof from me, and do not spare to spit in my face.

¹¹ I have become a reproach because of all my adversaries, yea, to my neighbors exceedingly, and a fear to my acquaintances. Those who saw me outside fled from me.

¹⁸ Thou have put beloved and friend far from me, and my acquaintances into darkness.

⁴ Look on my right hand, and see, for there is no man who knows me. Refuge has failed me. No man cares for my soul.

⁴ Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me. My heart within me is desolate.

⁷ Thus says LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despises, to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers. Kings shall see and arise, rulers, and they shall worship, because of LORD who is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen thee.

³ I have trodden the winepress alone, and of the peoples there was no man with me. Yea, I trod them in my anger, and trampled them in my wrath, and their lifeblood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my raiment.

² Now at that time the king of Babylon's army was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the guard, which was in the king of Judah's house.

⁵⁷ Now also the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that if any man knew where he is, he should disclose it, so that they might take him.

²³ He who hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works that no other man has done, they would not have had sin, but now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.

¹³ If thou set thy heart aright, and stretch out thy hands toward him,

²⁰ My friends scoff at me. My eye pours out tears to God

⁷ My eye also is dim because of sorrow, and all my members are as a shadow.

⁷ My eye wastes away because of grief. It grows old because of all my adversaries.

¹⁰ My heart throbs, my strength fails me. As for the light of my eyes, it also is gone from me.

³ My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say to me, Where is thy God?

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god,

¹⁷ Evening, and morning, and at noonday, I will complain and moan. And he will hear my voice.

³¹ Rulers shall come out of Egypt. Ethiopia shall hasten to stretch out her hands to God.

¹ O LORD, the God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee.

⁹ For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping,

⁶ I spread forth my hands to thee. My soul is as a weary land for thee. Selah.

⁴⁸ My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. ⁴⁹ My eye pours down, and does not cease, without any intermission,

¹¹ Moreover the word of LORD came to me, saying,

³⁵ Jesus wept.

⁷ For there is hope of a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch of it will not cease. ⁸ Though the root of it grows old in the earth, and the trunk of it dies in the ground, ⁹ yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a plant. ¹⁰ But man dies, and is laid low. Yea, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes away and dries up, ¹² so man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

⁵ For in death there is no remembrance of thee. In Sheol who shall give thee thanks?

¹⁷ The dead do not praise LORD, nor any who go down into silence,

¹⁷ I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of LORD.

¹⁹ Thy dead shall live. My dead bodies shall arise. Awake and sing, ye who dwell in the dust, for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast forth the dead.

¹⁸ For Sheol cannot praise thee, death cannot celebrate thee. Those who go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth. ¹⁹ The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day. The father to the sons shall make known thy truth.

¹ The hand of LORD was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley, and it was full of bones. ² And he caused me to pass by them round about. And, behold, there were very many in the open valley, and, lo, they were very dry. ³ And he said to me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O lord LORD, thou know. ⁴ Again he said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of LORD. ⁵ Thus says the lord LORD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live. ⁶ And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live. And ye shall know that I am LORD. ⁷ So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a noise, and, behold, an earthquake, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. ⁸ And I beheld, and, lo, there were sinews upon them, and flesh came up, and skin covered them above, but there was no breath in them. ⁹ Then he said to me, Prophesy to the wind. Prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus says the lord LORD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. ¹⁰ So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceedingly great army. ¹¹ Then he said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost. We are clean cut off. ¹² Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the lord LORD: Behold, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, O my people, and I will bring you into the land of Israel. ¹³ And ye shall know that I am LORD when I have opened your graves, and caused you to come up out of your graves, O my people. ¹⁴ And I will put my Spirit in you, and ye shall live. And I will place you in your own land. And ye shall know that I, LORD, have spoken it and performed it, says LORD.

³⁵ While he still spoke, they come from the synagogue ruler saying, Thy daughter died, why still trouble the teacher? ³⁶ But straightaway, Jesus, having heard the word spoken, says to the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe.

¹² Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, an only begotten son who died was being carried out for his mother. And she was a widow, and a considerable crowd of the city was with her. ¹³ And when the Lord saw her, he felt compassion toward her, and said to her, Weep not. ¹⁴ And having come, he touched the coffin, and the men carrying it stood still. And he said, Young man, I say to thee, arise. ¹⁵ And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. ¹⁶ And fear seized all. And they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has been raised among us, and, God came to help his people.

⁵² in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For it will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be transformed. ⁵³ For this perishable must put on imperishability, and this mortal put on immortality. ⁵⁴ But when this perishable will have put on imperishability, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come to pass the saying that is written, Death was swallowed up in victory. ⁵⁵ O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. ⁵⁷ But thanks is to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

³⁰ that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? That they are led forth to the day of wrath?

⁶ Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering.

²³ But thou, O God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in thee.

¹⁸ Surely thou set them in slippery places. Thou cast them down to destruction.

¹¹ Sheol and Abaddon are before LORD. How much more then the hearts of the sons of men!

¹³ Enter ye in by the narrow gate, because wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many are they who enter through it.

²² And if God, wanting to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,

¹ But false prophets also developed among the people, as false teachers will also be among you, who will sneak in pernicious denominations, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

²¹ before I go where I shall not return, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death, ²² the land dark as midnight, of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as midnight.

⁵ cast off among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom thou remember no more, and they are cut off from thy hand.

¹⁶ For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance forever, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how the wise man dies even as the fool!

¹⁰ So I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were praised in the city where they had so done. This also is vanity.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know not anything, nor have they any more a reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

²² And they shall look to the earth, and, behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and into thick darkness to be driven away.

¹² but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

³ O LORD, in the morning thou shall hear my voice. In the morning I will direct to thee, and will keep watch.

² O LORD my God, I cried to thee, and thou have healed me.

¹⁴⁷ I anticipated the dawning of the morning, and cried. I hoped in thy words. ¹⁴⁸ My eyes anticipated the night-watches that I might meditate on thy word.

³⁵ And having risen early, very much in the night, he came out and departed into a desolate place, and prayed there.

²⁴ Why do thou hide thy face, and reckon me for thine enemy?

¹ How long, O LORD? Will thou forget me forever? How long will thou hide thy face from me?

² For thou are the God of my strength. Why have thou cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

⁹ But now thou have cast off, and brought us to dishonor, and go not forth with our armies.

²⁴ Why do thou hide thy face, and forget our affliction and our oppression?

¹⁷ and hide not thy face from thy servant, for I am in distress. Answer me speedily.

⁷ Will the Lord cast off forever? And will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness entirely gone forever? Does his promise fail for evermore? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.

⁴⁶ And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a great voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is, My God, my God, why have thou forsaken me?

¹¹ Therefore I will not refrain my mouth. I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I a sea, or a sea-monster, that thou set a watch over me? ¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me. My couch shall ease my complaint. ¹⁴ Then thou scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions, ¹⁵ so that my soul chooses strangling and death rather than these my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe my life. I would not live always. Let me alone, for my days are vanity.

¹¹ My days are past. My purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart. ¹² They change the night into day. The light, they say, is near to the darkness. ¹³ If I look for Sheol as my house, if I have spread my couch in the darkness, ¹⁴ if I have said to corruption, Thou are my father, to the worm, My mother, and my sister, ¹⁵ where then is my hope? And as for my hope, who shall see it? ¹⁶ It shall go down to the bars of Sheol when once there is rest in the dust.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted within me. ¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue clings to my jaws, and thou have brought me into the dust of death.

¹⁴ for all the day long I have been plagued, and chastened every morning.

¹⁰ Yet it pleased LORD to bruise him. He has put him to grief. When thou shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed. He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of LORD shall prosper in his hand.

⁷ Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is my companion, says LORD of hosts. Smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. And I will turn my hand upon the little ones.

⁴⁴ And having become in agony he prayed more intensely, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down to the ground.

¹ O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath, nor chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presses me severely.

⁴⁶ How long, O LORD? Will thou hide thyself forever? Shall thy wrath burn like fire?

¹¹ Who knows the power of thine anger, and thy wrath according to the fear that is due to thee?

⁴ Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows. Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. ⁵ But he was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. ⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned every one to his own way, and LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

²⁶ And after the sixty-two weeks the anointed one shall be cut off, and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary, and the end of it shall be with a flood. And even to the end shall be war; desolations are determined.

³² He who did not even spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how will he not also give us all things with him?

¹³ Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, Cursed is every man who hangs on a tree.

¹⁷ Because the great day of his wrath has come, and who is able to stand?

¹² I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yea, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers encompass me round about. He splits my reins apart, and does not spare. He pours out my gall upon the ground.

¹⁴ As through a wide breach they come. In the midst of the ruin they roll themselves upon me. ¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me. They chase my honor as the wind, and my welfare is passed away as a cloud.

¹⁶ For dogs have encompassed me. A company of evildoers have enclosed me. They pierced my hands and my feet.

¹ Save me, O God, for the waters have come in to my soul. ² I sink in deep mire where there is no standing. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

³ The cords of death encompassed me, and the pains of Sheol got hold upon me. I found trouble and sorrow.

¹⁰ All nations encompassed me around. In the name of LORD I will cut them off. ¹¹ They encompassed me around, yea, they encompassed me around. In the name of LORD I will cut them off. ¹² They encompassed me around like bees. They are quenched as the fire of thorns. In the name of LORD I will cut them off.

⁴ then the waters would have overwhelmed us, the stream would have gone over our soul,

⁵ He has built against me, and encompassed me with gall and travail. ⁶ He has made me to dwell in dark places, as those who have long been dead. ⁷ He has walled me around, that I cannot go forth. He has made my chain heavy.

³⁹ And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, Thou who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save thyself. If thou are the Son of God, come down from the cross. ⁴¹ And likewise also the chief priests, ridiculing with the scholars, and elders, and Pharisees, said, ⁴² He saved others, he cannot save himself. If he is the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him. ⁴³ He trusted in God, let him rescue him now, if he wants him, for he said, I am the Son of God. ⁴⁴ And also the robbers who were crucified with him reviled him the same way.

¹² His troops come on together, and cast up their way against me, and encamp round about my tent. ¹³ He has put my brothers far from me, and my acquaintances are wholly estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ Those who dwell in my house, and my maids, reckon me for a stranger; I am an alien in their sight.

¹¹ Those I love and my friends stand aloof from my plague, and my kinsmen stand afar off.

⁸ Thou have put my acquaintances far from me. Thou have made me an abomination to them. I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.
