²⁸ Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart to melt, saying, The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven, and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed, the mighty men of Moab. Trembling takes hold upon them. All the inhabitants of Canaan are melted away.

²⁸ However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, very great, and moreover we saw the sons of Anak there. ²⁹ Amalek dwells in the land of the South. And the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country. And the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan. ³⁰ And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it, for we are well able to overcome it. ³¹ But the men who went up with him said, We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we. ³² And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the sons of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants of it. And all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. ³³ And we saw there the giants, the sons of Anak, who come of the giants. And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

¹ Hear, O Israel: Thou are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, ² a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou know, and of whom thou have heard say, Who can stand before the sons of Anak?

⁸ And the officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother's heart melt as his heart.

⁹ And she said to the men, I know that LORD has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us. And that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

¹¹ And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man because of you, for LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

²⁴ And they said to Joshua, Truly LORD has delivered into our hands all the land, and moreover all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us.

²² There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the sons of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod some remained.

⁸ Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt, but I wholly followed LORD my God.

¹⁴ And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the sons of Anak.

¹⁰ And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they smote Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

²⁰ And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had spoken, and he drove out the three sons of Anak from there.

And Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. ²⁰ And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature who had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, twenty-four in number, and he also was born to the giant. ²¹ And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David's brother, killed him. ²² These four were born to the giant in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

⁷ Therefore all hands shall be feeble, and every heart of man shall melt.

⁷ And it shall be, when they say to thee, Why do thou sigh? That thou shall say, Because of the news. For it comes, and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water. Behold, it comes, and it shall be done, says the lord LORD.
