⁵ In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand came forth, and wrote opposite the lampstand upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace. And the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the profane but for a moment?

³⁰ They were not estranged from that which they desired. Their food was yet in their mouths ³¹ when the anger of God went up against them, and killed of the fattest of them, and smote down the young men of Israel.

¹ He who, being often reproved, hardens his neck shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

³¹ While the word was in the king's mouth, a voice from heaven fell, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee.

³³ The same hour the thing was fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar. And he was driven from men, and ate grass as oxen. And his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.

⁸ Then all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.

¹⁵ And now the wise men, the enchanters, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known to me the interpretation of it, but they could not show the interpretation of the thing.

²⁴ Then the part of the hand was sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed. ²⁵ And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. ²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE, God has numbered thy kingdom, and brought it to an end. ²⁷ TEKEL, thou are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting. ²⁸ PERES, thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou have many goods laid up for many years. Take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said to him, Thou foolish man, they demand thy soul from thee this night, and the things that thou prepared, whose will they be?

¹⁴ having erased the handwriting against us in the regulations that were hostile to us, and he has taken it up from the midst, having nailed it to the cross.

² For ye yourselves know accurately that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. ³ For when they say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction approaches them, as the woman having birth pangs in her womb, and they will, no, not escape.

¹² And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the one of life. And the dead were judged from the things that were written in the books, according to their works. ¹³ And the sea gave up the dead in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead in them. And they were judged, each according to their works. ¹⁴ And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. ¹⁵ And if any man was found not written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
