¹⁸ And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate. And his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

³ And they said to me, The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. Also the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and the gates of it are burned with fire. ⁴ And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days. ⁸ LORD, I love the habitation of thy house, and the place where thy glory dwells.

¹ O God, the nations have come into thine inheritance. They have defiled thy holy temple. They have laid Jerusalem in heaps. ² They have given the dead bodies of thy servants to be food to the birds of the heavens, the flesh of thy sanctified to the beasts of the earth. ³ They have shed their blood like water round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them. ⁴ We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scoffing and derision to those who are round about us. ⁵ How long, O LORD? Will thou be angry forever? Shall thy jealousy burn like fire? ⁶ Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that do not know thee, and upon the kingdoms that do not call upon thy name. ⁷ For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his habitation. ⁸ Do not remember against us the iniquities of our forefathers. Let thy tender mercies speedily meet us, for we are brought very low.

⁴ How shall we sing LORD's song in a foreign land? ⁵ If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget. ⁶ Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember thee, if I do not prefer Jerusalem above my chief joy.
