¹⁸ The Jews therefore answered and said to him: What sign dost thou show to us, seeing that thou doest these things?

³⁸ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered him saying: Teacher, we desire to see a sign from thee. ³⁹ But he answering said to them: An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, but the sign of Jonah the prophet. ⁴⁰ For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the fish, so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. ⁴¹ Men of Nineveh will rise in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, a greater than Jonah is here. ⁴² A queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it; for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

¹ AND the Pharisees and Sadducees came to him, and tempting desired him to show them a sign from heaven. ² And he answering said to them: When it is evening, ye say: Fair weather! for the sky is red. ³ And in the morning: A storm to-day! for the sky is red and lowering. Ye know how to discern the face of the sky, but can ye not the signs of the times? ⁴ An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, but the sign of Jonah. And he left them, and departed.

²³ And when he had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said: By what authority doest thou these things; and who gave thee this authority?

¹¹ And the Pharisees came out, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

²⁷ And they come again into Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders. ²⁸ And they said to him: By what authority doest thou these things? And who gave thee this authority, to do these things? ²⁹ And the multitudes gathering more and more, he began to say: This generation is an evil generation. It seeks a sign; and no sign shall be given it, but the sign of Jonah.

¹ AND it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and publishing the good news, that the chief priests and the scribes came to him with the elders, ² and spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? Or who is he that gave thee this authority?

²⁵ And they asked him, and said to him: Why then dost thou immerse, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?

³⁰ They therefore said to him: What sign doest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? What dost thou work?

⁷ And having set them in the midst, they asked: By what power, or by what name, did ye do this?

²⁸ saying: Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
